PREMISE: The evolutionary history of morphologically variable plant groups is often obscured by cryptic diversity, morphological convergence, and limited genetic data. Arisaema, a diverse genus within Araceae, exemplifies these challenges. Although some taxonomic treatments recognize only two species of North American Arisaema (A. dracontium and A. triphyllum), other studies have identified morphologically distinct groups within both taxa. Here, we reconstructed evolutionary relationships in North American Arisaema, assessed genetic structure and admixture, and tested the monophyly of proposed

BACKGROUND: Arisaema amurense is widely known in Korean folklore as a poisonous plant, and its lethal toxicity has long been recognized. The toxicity of Arisaema amurense is due to its content of calcium oxalate, which causes painful oropharyngeal edema, hypersalivation, aphonia, oral ulceration, esophageal erosion, and hypocalcemia.
OBJECTIVE: We report a case of accidental poisoning after ingestion of the rhizome of Arisaema amurense, resulting in airway obstruction that required endotracheal intubation.
CASE REPORT: A 60-year-old man developed oral pain and swelling after accidentally ing

Plants of the Araceae family exude a sap containing calcium oxalate, a toxic substance that causes dermatitis. However, ocular injury due to exposure to Araceae sap has rarely been reported. Herein, we present a case of severe pseudomembranous conjunctivitis following exposure to Arisaema ringens, an Araceae species and popular houseplant in Japan. A 67-year-old man presented with pain in his right eye after exposure to the sap of A. ringens. At presentation, the best corrected visual acuity and intraocular pressure in the right eye were 20/800 and 15 mm Hg. Slit-lamp examination showed strong

Deceptive pollination exploits pollinator perceptual biases while offering no reward. Arisaema (Araceae) employs an extreme form of this strategy, in which fungus gnats are lured into a slippery floral tube that often proves fatal. However, the key factors governing attraction and capture remain poorly understood, partly due to the typically low frequency of floral visitation. Preliminary observations revealed that Arisaema serratum exhibits a relatively high visitation rate of fungus gnats. We therefore conducted direct behavioral observations of pollinators associated with A. serratum in a c

This study investigated the underlying mechanisms of lipid-lowering effect of Arisaema Cum Bile by using lipidomics technology. The hyperlipidemia rat model was established through feeding a high-fat diet continuously for 4 weeks. The rats were randomized into five groups after the successful modeling: model control, fenofibrate(40 mg·kg~(-1)), high-dose Arisaema Cum Bile(2.8 g·kg~(-1)), medium-dose Arisaema Cum Bile(1.4 g·kg~(-1)), and low-dose Arisaema Cum Bile(0.7 g·kg~(-1)). After the drug intervention for four consecutive weeks, serum samples were collected for blood lipid parameter and l

Arisaema decipiens-(A. decipiens), a traditional Chinese folk medicine, is recognized for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. In this study, we report the extraction, purification, and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of C-glycosides from A. decipiens (ADCG). We developed an integrated strategy for the efficient enrichment and identification of polar C-glycosides from A. decipiens. Sample pretreatment via freeze-drying preserved thermolabile constituents, and reflux extraction with 60% aqueous ethanol optimized polar compound recovery. A key innovation was the implementation of a repea

As targeted therapy assumes an increasingly pivotal role in comprehensive cancer treatment, there is a growing imperative to develop natural drugs that exhibit low toxicity and minimal side effects. Polysaccharides derived from the traditional Chinese herbal medicine Arisaema erubescens have been reported to show antitumor potential, however the key structural features and specific molecular targets responsible for their pharmacological effects are still vague. To address this question, a homogeneous polysaccharide TNX05 (Mw ≈ 9 kDa) was obtained and characterized from Arisaema erubescens. Str

Arisaema cum Bile (DNX, Dan Nanxing) is a traditional fermented Chinese medicine renowned for its antipyretic properties. Conventionally, DNX is produced through natural fermentation using indigenous microbial strains, which often results in an unstable microbial composition and susceptibility to contamination by harmful microorganisms. Additionally, inconsistencies in the fermentation process and outdated quality control methods further compromise the quality and safety of the final product. This study aimed to investigate the production of DNX using isolated fungal combinations under control
