Antimycobacterial neolignans isolated from Aristolochia taliscana.

Tuberculosis (TB - Mycobacterium tuberculosis) is an ancient infectious disease that has appeared once again as a serious worldwide health problem and now comprises the second leading cause of death resulting from a single infection. The prevalence of multidrug resistance (MDR) TB is increasing and therapeutic options for treatment are not always accessible; in fact, some patients do not respond to the available drugs. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel anti-TB agents. The aim of the present study was to screen extracts of Aristolochia taliscana, a plant used in traditional Me

Antibacterial activity of Aristolochia paucinervis Pomel.

Several fractions of the methanolic extract of the rhizome or the leaves of Aristolochia paucinervis Pomel were screened for antibacterial activity using the agar dilution method against fourteen reference bacterial strains. Only three fractions (defatted chloroformic rhizome fraction: APRC, rhizome ethyl acetate fraction: APRE and leaf chloroform fraction: APLC) showed an activity against at least one of the microorganisms tested. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination showed that APRC was the most active against Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium difficile, Enterococcus f

Endemic nephropathy: the case for chronic poisoning by aristolochia.

AIM: To explore the hypothesis that chronic dietary poisoning by aristolochic acid could account for the unique geographical distribution, specific pattern of tubulointerstitial fibrosis, occurrence of chronic renal insufficiency, and an increased risk of developing upper urothelial cancer, all of which are associated with endemic nephropathy. METHODS: This case-controlled epidemiologic study consisted of three groups of subjects residing in an endemic region of Croatia: (a) patients meeting WHO criteria for endemic nephropathy (n=28), (b) individuals who have been treated for renal insuffici

Antiallergic activity of Aristolochia bracteolata Lank in animal model.

Antiallergic activity of Aristolochia bracteolata was evaluated by using compound 48/80 induced anaphylaxis, dermatitis rhinitis and pruritus, as a preclinical model for acute phase of hypersensitivity reactions. The late phase hypersensitivity was evidenced by considering toluidine diisocyanate induced volume of bronchoalveolar fluid secretion and its inhibition. The possible antiallergic mechanism was evaluated by using compound 48/80 induced mast cell activation and estimated serum nitric oxide (NO), rat peritoneal fluid NO, bronchoalveolar fluid NO and blood histamine levels. The present s

Detection of Herba Aristolochia Mollissemae in a patient with unexplained nephropathy.

The authors report a case of unexplained nephropathy 2 months after ingestion of Herba Aristolochia Mollissemae in a patient with long-standing Crohn's disease and recently diagnosed carcinoma of the colon. It presented as a relentlessly progressing hypocellular interstitial nephritis 5 months after cessation of an earlier course of mesalazine. The patient finally had end-stage renal failure 12 months after taking herbs and required hemodialysis. Aristolochic acid (AA) was detected in the herbal sample of Herba Aristolochia Mollissemae by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array dete

Aristolochia Herbs and Iatrogenic Disease: The Case of Portland's Powders.

Aristolochia herbals have a 2500-year history of medicinal use. We focused this article on Portland's Powders, an 18th-century British gout medicine containing Aristolochia herbs. The powders constitute an 18th-century iteration of an herbal remedy, which was used, with variations, since at least the fifth century BCE. The use of Portland's Powders in Great Britain may appear to be an unusual choice for investigating a public health problem currently widespread in Asia. Yet it exemplifies long-term medicinal use of Aristolochia herbs, reflecting our argument that aristolochic acid nephropathy

Urothelial carcinoma associated with the use of a Chinese herb (Aristolochia fangchi).

BACKGROUND: Chinese-herb nephropathy is a progressive form of renal fibrosis that develops in some patients who take weight-reducing pills containing Chinese herbs. Because of a manufacturing error, one of the herbs in these pills (Stephania tetrandra) was inadvertently replaced by Aristolochia fangchi, which is nephrotoxic and carcinogenic. METHODS: The diagnosis of a neoplastic lesion in the native urinary tract of a renal-transplant recipient who had Chinese-herb nephropathy prompted us to propose regular cystoscopic examinations and the prophylactic removal of the native kidneys and urete

Efficacy of Aristolochia rotunda Linn in hyperuricemia: A randomised standard controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperuricemia (HU) is a health risk that may go undiagnosed and is on the rise in both developed and developing countries. Gout, the most common inflammatory arthritis characterized by painful, disabling acute attack, is widely known to be caused by hyperuricemia. Its prevalence ranges from 2.6% to 36% in different populations. The commonly used drugs for alleviating uric acid and gout have obvious side effects, so herbal therapeutic drugs are in high demand. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Aristolochia rotunda Linn in Hyperuricemia. METHO

Alterations of haemodynamic parameters in spontaneously hypertensive rats by Aristolochia ringens Vahl. (Aristolochiaceae).

Aristolochia ringens Vahl. (Aristolochiaceae (AR); mǎ dōu líng) is used traditionally in Nigeria for the management of various disorders including oedema. Preliminary investigation revealed its modulatory effect on the cardiovascular system. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of the aqueous root extract of A. ringens (AR) on haemodynamic parameters of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). The effect of oral subacute (21 days) and intravenous acute exposure of SHRs to the extract were assessed using tail cuff and carotid artery canulation methods respectively. In the latter, the
