Alterations of haemodynamic parameters in spontaneously hypertensive rats by Aristolochia ringens Vahl. (Aristolochiaceae).

Aristolochia ringens Vahl. (Aristolochiaceae (AR); mǎ dōu líng) is used traditionally in Nigeria for the management of various disorders including oedema. Preliminary investigation revealed its modulatory effect on the cardiovascular system. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of the aqueous root extract of A. ringens (AR) on haemodynamic parameters of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). The effect of oral subacute (21 days) and intravenous acute exposure of SHRs to the extract were assessed using tail cuff and carotid artery canulation methods respectively. In the latter, the

Synchrony of floral volatile emission with diurnal pollinators of possible decomposition mimic Asarum savatieri (Aristolochiaceae).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Floral scent is crucial for mediating plant-pollinator interactions, a primary driver of angiosperm diversity. The dynamic nature of olfactory cues means they can be fine-tuned to suit pollinator activity, making them an effective method of adaptation to local pollinator niches. Asarum sect. Heterotropa is one of the most species-rich lineages in Japan with remarkable variation in floral scents. We investigate how floral volatiles determine pollinator specificity in A. savatieri, a species with unusual floral phenology and scent, and examine how scent emission is synchroni

Chemical imitation of yeast fermentation by the drosophilid-pollinated deceptive trap-flower Aristolochia baetica (Aristolochiaceae).

Deceptive flowers, unlike in mutualistic pollination systems, mislead their pollinators by advertising rewards which ultimately are not provided. Although our understanding of deceptive pollination systems increased in recent years, the attractive signals and deceptive strategies in the majority of species remain unknown. This is also true for the genus Aristolochia, famous for its deceptive and fly-pollinated trap flowers. Representatives of this genus were generally assumed to be oviposition-site mimics, imitating vertebrate carrion or mushrooms. However, recent studies found a broader spect

Aristolochia species (Aristolochiaceae) from the Americas, a review of their traditional medicinal uses, phytochemistry, and pharmacological properties.

Aristolochia is a pantropical genus with important pharmacological properties. Despite making up 75 % of the global Aristolochia, the species from the Americas have received comparatively little research attention. Here, we exhaustively review the ethnopharmacology and phytochemistry of Aristolochia species from the Americas, based upon 238 literature references and specimen vouchers of 28 Americas herbaria. The resulting database encompasses 919 records on 95 Aristolochia species with 129 documented traditional medicinal uses. South America and Mexico displayed the highest prevalence of tradi

Development of validated high-performance thin layer chromatography for quantification of aristolochic acid in different species of the Aristolochiaceae family.

This study was undertaken to isolate and quantify aristolochic acid in Aristolochia indica stem and Apama siliquosa root. Aristolochic acid is an important biomarker component present in the Aristolochiaceae family. The isolation method involved simple solvent extraction, precipitation and further purification, using recrystallization. The structure of the compound was confirmed using infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. A specific and rapid high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) method was developed for analysis of aristolochic acid. The method

Vengeful Vines: Cell Death and Neoplasm Formation in Aristolochia (Aristolochiaceae, Piperales) in Response to Oviposition of Troidini (Papilionidae, Lepidoptera) Butterflies.

The ecological interactions of the iconic Troidini swallowtail butterflies and their host plants remain largely unknown, despite the popularity of these butterflies in collections and their significance as conservation flagships. We sought to elucidate the ecological interactions of perhaps the least known life-stage of the butterflies: that of the egg with its host plant. We recorded oviposition location and egg survival rates for Troides helena, Troides amphrysus and Pachliopta antiphus on their host plants Aristolochia acuminata and Aristolochia cf. foveolata through systematic monitoring o

Assessment of the In Vitro Antischistosomal Activities of the Extracts and Compounds from Solidago Microglossa DC (Asteraceae) and Aristolochia Cymbifera Mart. & Zucc. (Aristolochiaceae).

Schistosomiasis, caused by helminth flatworms of the genus Schistosoma, is a neglected tropical disease that afflicts over 230 million people worldwide. Currently, treatment is achieved with only one drug, praziquantel (PZQ). In this regard, the roots of Solidago microglossa (Asteraceae) and Aristolochia cymbifera (Aristolochiaceae) are popularly used as anthelmintic. Despite their medicinal use against helminthiasis, such as schistosomiasis, A. cymbifera, and S. microglossa have not been evaluated against S. mansoni. Then, in this work, the in vitro antischistosomal activity of the crude extr

Detection of Herba Aristolochia Mollissemae in a patient with unexplained nephropathy.

The authors report a case of unexplained nephropathy 2 months after ingestion of Herba Aristolochia Mollissemae in a patient with long-standing Crohn's disease and recently diagnosed carcinoma of the colon. It presented as a relentlessly progressing hypocellular interstitial nephritis 5 months after cessation of an earlier course of mesalazine. The patient finally had end-stage renal failure 12 months after taking herbs and required hemodialysis. Aristolochic acid (AA) was detected in the herbal sample of Herba Aristolochia Mollissemae by high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array dete

Mechanisms of Aristolochic Acid Resistance in Specialist Butterflies and Evolutionary Insights for Potential Protective Pathways.

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are natural compounds found in Aristolochiaceae plants, to which humans are frequently exposed through environmental and medicinal sources. AAs are highly nephrotoxic and carcinogenic, mediated by oxidative stress and bioactivation-induced DNA damage and mutagenicity. Nevertheless, some Lepidoptera, including Pachliopta aristolochiae, feed exclusively on Aristolochiaceae and sequester AAs as a chemical defense. This is uncommon in nature and it is not yet fully understood how these insects avoid the lethal effects of AAs. To address this question, we investigate Pac. a

Herbs and hazards: risk of aristolochic acid nephropathy in Iran.

Herbs are usually considered as inherently harmless products. Nonetheless, various renal injuries have been reported in association with several herbs. The best-known herb-induced chronic kidney disease is aristolochic acid nephropathy. Aristolochic acid is found in Chinese slim herbs. Balkan endemic nephropathy is nowadays considered as an aristolochic acid nephropathy. Plants of Aristolochiaceae (also known as birthwort, dutchman's pipe, and somersworth) is named zaravand or chopoghak in Persian and it grows in different mountainous and rural areas of Iran. Simultaneous Determination of Aristoloxazines, Aristolochic Acids, and Aristolactams Using HPLC-Fluorescence Detection with a Post-column Microreactor: Application in Identifying New Aristoloxazines.

Aristoloxazines (AXs), aristolochic acids (AAs), and aristolactams (ALs) are potent genotoxins found in Asarum and Aristolochia plants, many of which are commonly used as herbal medicines. Emerging evidence indicates that these compounds contaminate arable soil during the cultivation of Aristolochiaceae herbs. Currently, no method exists for their simultaneous detection. In this study, we developed a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-based method for their determination. This method employs an iron powder-packed microreactor to convert non-fluorescent AXs and AAs into naturally flu

Comprehensive HRMS Screening and Risk Assessments of Aristolochic Acid Analogues in Asari Radix et Rhizoma and Related Commercial Health Products.

Aristolochic acid analogues (AAAs) are well-known toxins. We performed the first comprehensive screening on AAAs in Asari Radix et Rhizoma (underground part of Asarum heterotropoides Schmidt), the only Aristolochiaceae plant widely used in clinical practice. LC-HRMS revealed 70 trace AAAs using polygonal mass defect filtering and precursor ion list strategies, 38 of which were newly discovered in A. heterotropoides. UHPLC-QTrap-MS/MS was then utilized for quantitative/semiquantitative analysis of 26 abundant compounds. Seventeen AAAs were detected from 91 batches of A. heterotropoides and 20 A

[Aristolochic acid nephropathy].

Aristolochic acid nephropathy is a chronic, fibrosing, interstitial nephritis caused by aristolochic acid (AA), which is a component of the plants of Aristolochiacae family. It was first reported in 1993, in Belgium as a Chinese herb nephropathy, in patients who received a slimming regimen containing AA. The term aristolochic acid nephropathy also includes Balcan endemic nephropathy and other endemic tubulointerstitial fibrosis. Moreover, AA is a human carcinogen which induces urothelial cancer. The AA-containing herbs are banned in many countries and FDA published the warnings concerning the

[Studies on the renal toxicity caused by aristolochic acids (AAs) and Chinese herbs containing AAs].

The article summarized the general situation of the study on the renal toxicity caused by aristolochic acids (AAs) and Chinese herbs containing AAs. The renal lesion induced by AAs and Chinese herbs containing AAs locates mainly in renal tubules, and glomeruluses have no obvious histological change. The short term administration of large doses causes acute renal epithelia denaturalization and tubular necrosis, but the long-term administration may result in chronically progressive interstitial fibrosis of the kidney. Renal failure may occur following both acute and chronic renal lesion. The ren

Mitochondrial DNA leakage and micronucleus formation activate the cGAS-STING pathway in aristolochic acid I-induced nephritis.

Aristolochic acid I (AAI), a compound in Aristolochiaceae family of plants, has carcinogenic and nephrotoxic effects. However, medicinal and environmental AAI exposure persists. The genotoxic impacts of AAI are reasonably well understood; however, the mechanisms governing its nephrotoxicity and the underlying interaction between its genotoxicity and nephrotoxic characteristics remain elusive. Here, we uncovered a link between AAI-induced DNA damage and the activation of the cGAS-STING pathway, a previously unidentified participant in nephritis. We hypothesized that AAI-induced oxidative stress
