Abortifacient potentials of the aqueous extract of Bambusa vulgaris leaves in pregnant Dutch rabbits.

BACKGROUND: There is the claim in the folklore medicine of Nigeria of the use of Bambusa vulgaris leaves as an abortifacient. However, there has not been any scientific evidence in the literature that substantiated or refuted this claim. STUDY DESIGN: Pregnant Dutch rabbits weighing 1.62-1.70 kg were randomized into three groups. Group A (control) was orally administered with 1.85 mL/kg body weight of distilled water (vehicle), thrice daily on Days 18-20 of pregnancy, while Groups B and C were treated like the control group except they received 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight of the aqueous ext

The Targeted Regulation of BDUbc and BDSKL1 Enhances Resistance to Blight in Bambusa pervariabilis × Dendrocalamopsis grandis.

Arthrinium phaeospermum is the major pathogen responsible for the significant stem disease "blight" in B. pervariabilis × D. grandis. The interacting proteins of the key pathogenic factor ApCtf1β, BDUbc and BDSKL1, have previously been obtained by two-hybrid, BiFC, GST pull-down yeast assays. However, the functions of these interacting proteins remain unknown. This study successfully obtained transgenic plants overexpressing BDUbc, BDSKL1, and BDUbc + BDSKL1 via Agrobacterium-mediated gene overexpression. qRT-PCR analysis revealed significantly increased expression levels of BDUbc and BDSKL1 i

Comparative Physiology and Transcriptome Analysis Provides Insights into the Regulatory Mechanism of Albinotic Bambusa oldhamii.

Albinism is a unique problem encountered in tissue culture experiments, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear in most bamboo species. In this study, we identified the putative regulatory genes in an albino mutant of Bambusa oldhamii using comparative physiology and transcriptome analysis. The degeneration of chloroplasts, low chlorophyll (Chl) content and reduced photosynthetic capacity were observed in albinotic B. oldhamii compared to normal lines. A total of 6191 unigenes were identified that were clearly differentially expressed between albino and normal lines by transcriptome seque

Micropropagation of Bambusa edulis through nodal explants of field-grown culms and flowering of regenerated plantlets.

Nodal explants obtained from 10-year-old field-grown culms of Bambusa edulis produced multiple shoots on a Murashige-and-Skoog-based medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/l of thidiazuron (TDZ). Hundreds of regenerated shoots rooted well on a medium supplemented with 0.01 mg/l TDZ and 0.5 mg/l 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and were successfully transferred to soil for field trials. Albinism occurred at the rate of about 30% among the regenerated shoots, and isolated albino shoots also proliferated on the medium containing TDZ. Some of the green and albino shoots also flowered on the medium containi

Influence of flowering on the anatomical structure, chemical components and carbohydrate metabolism of Bambusa tuldoides culms at different ages.

Bamboo forests, which have come to occupy large areas in recent years, naturally undergo the process of blooming. However, bamboo culms and rhizomes degenerate after the plants bloom, resulting in widespread loss of raw materials. Systematic research on the properties and physiology of bamboo culms after flowering is lacking, and whether flowering bamboo culms could be used as raw materials in industry is unclear. In this paper, we compared and measured the fiber morphology, chemical components, and sugar metabolism indexes of non-flowering and flowering Bambusa tuldoides culms at different ag

Original Research: Extract of Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam inhibits cigarette smoke-induced pulmonary and intestinal inflammation.

The pulmonary and intestinal systems have several characteristics in common. It is believed that these similarities somehow function to cause pulmonary-intestinal crosstalk during inflammation. Many studies have shown that pulmonary disease occurs in association with inflammatory bowel disease more often than is commonly recognized. Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam, a medicinal herb originated from the inner bark of Phyllostachys nigra var. henosis (Milford) Rendle (Poaceae), has been used to cure fever, diarrhea, and chest inflammation in Korea as well as in China. Cigarette smoke is a well-known r

In Vitro Propagation of Plants via Organogenesis in Bambusa vulgaris Schrad. ex Wendl Using Temporary Immersion Systems.

The low multiplication and ex vitro survival rates during acclimatization in the culture house limit the in vitro mass propagation of B. vulgaris. Several scientific studies have described the development of different protocols for bamboo; however, not all of them address the effects of these systems on plant morphology, physiology, and biochemistry in vitro. In this chapter, a complete and optimized protocol is described for plants propagated via organogenesis in temporary immersion systems. In addition, the morphophysiological and biochemical characterization of the plants as well as the sur

Comparative physiological, transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses reveal the mechanisms underlying the exceptionally long internodes in bamboo (Bambusa distegia).

Bamboo has emerged as a globally significant sustainable resource, playing an increasingly vital role in "bamboo-for-plastic" initiatives and other green industries. Internode length represents a key agronomic trait that determines fiber yield and processing efficiency in bamboo. To elucidate the mechanisms governing internode elongation, this study investigated Bambusa distegia, a species characterized by exceptionally long internodes (over 100 cm). Comparative analysis of growth dynamics with Phyllostachys edulis and Dendrocalamus farinosus, and cytological comparison between B. distegia and
