"Blepharophimosis-plus" syndromes: Frequency of systemic genetic disorders that also include blepharophimosis.

BACKGROUND: To determine the frequency of isolated blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES) versus systemic genetic disorders in patients presenting with blepharophimosis. METHODS: Retrospective clinical records review. The records of all patients with blepharophimosis seen in the Division of Ophthalmology at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia during a 12-year-period (2009-2020) were reviewed for medical history, clinical examination findings and results of genetic analyses. RESULTS: The 135 patients identified with blepharophimosis included 72 females (53%) and 63 ma

[Hereditary blepharophimosis with visual alterations].

We report a Mexican family with two members (mother and daughter) affected with blepharophimosis hereditary syndrome: ptosis of the eyelids, blepharospasm and epicanthus inversus. The daughter presented: hyperopia, astigmatism, hemispheric asymmetry, superficial mental deficiency and ovarian cyst. The mother with ophthalmological affectation, present too border line intellectual quotient. Clinical findings in this family illustrate autosomal dominant trait; differential diagnosis should be taken into account for genetic counselling.

Blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES).

The blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome is characterized by shortening of the horizontal orbital fissure (blepharophimosis), congenital ptosis and epicanthus inversus. The condition may occur either as an autosomal dominant trait (blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome types 1 and 2), or sporadically. Blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome type 1 is associated with female infertility. Mental subnormality may occur, especially in the sporadic cases. Chromosome analysis from a few patients suggests that the genetic defect causing the syndrome is local

Blepharophimosis syndrome: association with colobomatous microphthalmos.

OBJECTIVE: To highlight the association of colobomatous microphthalmos with blepharophimosis syndrome. RESULT: We present a case of blepharophimosis syndrome associated with bilateral optic disc, retinochoroidal and iris colobomas, and microphthalmos, in a Caucasian boy. Inheritance in this case was autosomal dominant from the maternal side. CONCLUSION: Colobomatous microphthalmos is an infrequent ocular abnormality in the blepharophimosis syndrome. Ophthalmologists should be aware of this association.

Blepharophimosis syndrome with absent tear production.

The purpose of this report was to present a case of congenital alacrima in a patient with blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES). A 9-month-old boy presented with characteristic clinical findings of BPES confirmed by genetic testing. On further history taking and evaluation, the patient was noted to have no tear production, despite clinically present palpebral lobes of the lacrimal glands. BPES is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by narrowed horizontal palpebral fissures, severe bilateral symmetric ptosis, epicanthus inversus, and telecanthus. To the authors'

The Ohdo blepharophimosis syndrome: a third case.

A patient with a syndrome consisting of blepharophimosis, simple ears, hypoplastic teeth, developmental delay, and hypotonia is described. Previous case reports are reviewed and a differential diagnosis is described. Many of the features in the subject are similar to those described in two previous reports and they constitute a distinct syndrome.

Acquired blepharophimosis in a patient with juvenile blepharospasm.

At 4 years of age, a young girl with Schwartz-Jampel syndrome developed blepharospasm with resultant blepharophimosis. Her eyelids and facial features had been normal until that time. While these rare ocular abnormalities may be present together in patients with this syndrome, the relationship between them has not been explained. We theorize that constant orbicularis squeezing in the pediatric age group retards full eyelid development and leads to acquired blepharophimosis.

[Ovarian insufficiency in blepharophimosis, ptosis, epicanthus inversus].

Combined blepharophimosis, ptosis, and epicanthus inversus (BPEI) represent a rare syndrome with autosomal dominant transmission. In affected females it can be associated with infertility. In this case report we could follow the development of primary ovarian failure in a 28-year old woman with BPEI by repeated hormone determinations. Endocrinological and morphological results give good evidence of increasing gonadotropin resistance on the ovarian level.

A case of blepharophimosis: Freeman Sheldon syndrome.

PURPOSE: Important implications exist for ophthalmologists when considering possible early surgical intervention for potential amblyogenic anatomical abnormalities. The authors discuss the risks and benefits from an ophthalmological perspective of different interventions and review the genetic testing that confirmed the diagnosis. OBSERVATIONS: The authors describe the findings and management of an infant with Freeman Sheldon syndrome presenting with blepharophimosis of both eyelids resulting in inability to open both eyes during the first several days of life. Although the mode of inheritanc

Hypopituitarism in Patients with Blepharophimosis and FOXL2 Mutations.

BACKGROUND: FOXL2 is the gene involved in blepharophimosis, ptosis, and epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES). There have been few single case reports of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) with this syndrome, and Foxl2 is known to be involved in pituitary development in mice. Our aim was to analyze the prevalence of FOXL2 gene alteration in a series of patients with congenital hypopituitarism and eyelid anomalies. METHODS: FOXL2 was analyzed in 10 patients with hypopituitarism (ranging from isolated GHD to complete pituitary hormone deficiency) and eyelid anomalies (typical BPES in 4 patients and

Congenital alacrima in a patient with blepharophimosis syndrome.

PURPOSE: To report a case of congenital alacrima in a patient with Blepharophimosis Syndrome (BPES). METHODS: Case report of a 9-month-old female who presented with severe dry eyes. Further investigation revealed bilateral absence of lacrimal glands confirmed by CT. This unique case and its management are discussed. RESULTS: Conservative management with artificial tears and ointment did not treat the ocular surface dryness. A combination of aggressive lubrication with surgical occlusion of the lower lid punctums was required to improve the corneal surface. CONCLUSION: BPES can be associated

Vertical transmission of the Ohdo blepharophimosis syndrome.

Ohdo blepharophimosis syndrome (OBS) is a multiple congenital anomalies-mental retardation syndrome composed of blepharophimosis, ptosis, dental hypoplasia, partial deafness, and mental retardation. Previously reported cases of OBS have been sporadic except for the report by Ohdo et al. [1986, J Med Genet 23:242-244] that described two affected sisters and a first cousin favoring autosomal recessive inheritance. The original report by Ohdo et al. [1986] may reflect nonpenetrance of an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder or genetic heterogeneity of OBS. We report on a child and the mother w

[A case of severe mental retardation with blepharophimosis, ptosis, microphthalmia, microcephalus, hypogonadism and short stature--the difference from Ohdo blepharophimosis syndrome].

We report a case of 13-year-old girl with short stature, microcephalus, blepharophimosis, ptosis, bilateral microphthalmia (more prominent in the right), hypogonadism, other minor anomalies, and severe mental retardation. Her mother had two spontaneous abortions. She was born as the second baby of dizygotic twins. The first baby died of diaphragm hernia and heart failure. Her body height, body weight and head circumference were below -3 SD. She did not have epicanthus inversus, hypoplastic teeth, heart anomalies, seizures, muscle weakness, and hearing loss. She was able to handle her wheelchai

Familial blepharophimosis: an uncommon marker of ovarian dysgenesis.

We report on six young female patients from two families who were found to have a very rare form of ovarian failure. Hypogonadism is inherited with an ocular abnormality consisting of a congenital dysplasia of the eyelids. In one family inheritance is autosomal dominant and in the other it is a de novo mutation. The patients have no other dysmorphic features and are of normal intelligence. Plasma levels of follicle-stimulating and luteinizing hormones are significantly elevated. Examination of the internal genitalia by laparoscopy was performed in four cases with ovarian biopsy in one case; th
