Kairomone attractant for the leafmining fly, Liriomyza bryoniae (Diptera, Agromyzidae).

A field test carried out in an industrial greenhouse in Lithuania revealed the attractiveness of synthetic methyl salicylate (MeSa) towards an economically important leafmining tomato pest, Liriomyza bryoniae (Kaltenbach) (Diptera, Agromyzidae). The behavioural reaction of the flies depended very much on the simultaneous presence of both olfactory and visual stimuli. The attractiveness depended on the colour of a sticky trap: MeSa attracted significantly more flies (ca. 2.2 times) when placed in yellow traps than in aluminium foil colour ones, when catches in such traps were compared to a corr

Cadmium-Induced Testicular and Spermatogonial Damage Ameliorated by Bryonia laciniosa Linn. Seeds in Wistar Rats: An Animal Study.

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous occupational pollutant that has been extensively studied for its detrimental effects on male reproductive function, primarily through the induction of oxidative stress, which compromises both sperm quality and sperm DNA integrity. This study aimed to evaluate the protective efficacy of Bryonia laciniosa Linn., a phytochemically rich medicinal plant, against cadmium-induced reproductive toxicity in Wistar rats. Twenty-four healthy adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 6 per group): a control group, a B. laciniosa extract-treated group, a

Ultra-diluted Bryonia alba extract modulates HMOX-1 gene expression to attenuate the pathogenetic effect of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein RBD antigen.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the familiar use of Bryonia alba (Bry-alb) in COVID-19, the method of accomplishment of this homeopathic medicine is not appropriately explored. Studies have revealed that constituents of Bry-alb can up-regulate the haeme-oxygenase-1 (HMOX-1) gene in diverse circumstances. In this experiment, we were concerned to explore whether a COVID-19-induced cytokine dysregulation could be managed by Bry-alb through this pathway. METHODS: Fourteenth-day-old embryonated Gallus gallus domesticus eggs were divided into six experimental groups, and except for the control, all eggs in o

[Treatment of pain due to unwanted lactation with a homeopathic preparation given in the immediate post-partum period].

Dopaminergic agonists, such as Parlodel((R)), are now widely used to inhibit lactation. However, some countries, such as the United States, no longer use these drugs in this indication because of their sometimes serious adverse effects. In this context, the authors tested a homeopathic treatment designed for parturients unable or not wanting to breastfeed. The APIS MELLIFICA 9 CH and BRYONIA 9 CH combination was chosen for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. 71 patients were included in this double-blind placebo-controlled study. All received basic treatment comprising naproxen and fl

Consensus-based guideline for the supportive anthroposophic therapies to treat children with pseudocroup (stenosing laryngotracheitis).

PURPOSE: Supportive anthroposophic therapies are used to treat children with pseudocroup by pediatricians in outpatient and inpatient settings. Anthroposophic treatment comprises forms of creative therapies, external applications as well as remedies, which production is based on the knowledge of the human being, nature and substances. A scientifically based guideline for these therapies is lacking. Due to insufficient study situation, we developed a consensus-based guideline to make therapy decisions more transparent and facilitate clinical routine. METHODS: An online Delphi process with 67 a

Medicinal plants and food medicines in the folk traditions of the upper Lucca Province, Italy.

An ethnopharmacobotanical survey of the medicinal plants and food medicines of the northern part of Lucca Province, north-west Tuscany, central Italy, was carried out. The geographical isolation of this area has permitted the survival of a rich folk phytotherapy involving medicinal herbs and also vegetable resources used by locals as food medicine. Among these are the uncommon use of Ballota nigra leaves as a trophic protective; the use of Lilium candidum bulbs as an antiviral to treat shingles (Herpes zoster); Parmelia sp. as a cholagogue; Crocus napolitanus flowers as antiseptic; Prunus laur

Similarity of host responses elicited by polysaccharides of animal and plant origin and by bacterial endotoxins.

Ten polysaccharides, isolated from various animal and plant sources, were selected for comparison with 2 bacterial polysaccharides, typical of Gram-negative endotoxins. The tissue sources were: mouse (kidney, liver, lung, stomach, Sarcoma 37, and Carcinoma 241-6); rabbit skin and chick embryo skin; and tangerine and Bryonia root. The bacterial endotoxins were those of S. typhosa and Serr. marcescens. Their relative potency was determined in inducing the following host effects: fever, tolerance to pyrogenic action, leucocytic changes, the Shwartzman reaction, damage to Sarcoma 37, dermal hemorr

Ion channel-forming alamethicin is a potent elicitor of volatile biosynthesis and tendril coiling. Cross talk between jasmonate and salicylate signaling in lima bean.

Alamethicin (ALA), a voltage-gated, ion channel-forming peptide mixture from Trichoderma viride, is a potent elicitor of the biosynthesis of volatile compounds in lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus). Unlike elicitation with jasmonic acid or herbivore damage, the blend of substances emitted comprises only the two homoterpenes, 4,11-dimethylnona-1,3,7-triene and 4,8,12-trimethyltrideca-1,3,7,11-tetraene, and methyl salicylate. Inhibition of octadecanoid signaling by aristolochic acid and phenidone as well as mass spectrometric analysis of endogenous jasmonate demonstrate that ALA induces the biosynthe
