Gap analysis of breast cancer care at tertiary facilities in Armenia.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer mortality among women globally. Armenia has one of the highest breast cancer mortality rates in the world, with an age standardized mortality-to-incidence ratio of 0.41, indicating that two in five breast cancer patients die from the disease. The factors contributing to this disproportionate mortality burden are poorly understood. The present study utilized a validated survey across four high-capacity cancer facilities to produce a national gap analysis of breast cancer care in Armenia. We find that the tertiary facilities surveyed broadly possess t

Characteristics of patients with cancer in European long-term care facilities.

PURPOSE: Up to 26% of residents in nursing homes (NHs) are affected by cancer. Their care represents a challenge, because NHs are not usually considered a setting focused on oncologic management and care. The aim of this paper is to describe socio-demographic and clinical features of patients with cancer residing in European NHs. METHODS: Cross-sectional study based on data from the Services and Health for Elderly in Long TERm care (SHELTER) study. Participants were assessed through the interRAI-LTCF, which includes cancer assessment. RESULTS: Among 4140 participants (mean age 83.4 years; fe

Regional inequities in colon cancer surgical care: Patterns of treatment delay across U.S. facilities.

OBJECTIVES: Timely surgical resection is critical for optimal survival in colon cancer, yet delays remain common. Persistent inequities in access to surgery may contribute to these delays, but how these disparities vary across U.S. regions and over time is not well understood. We aimed to assess regional variation in surgical treatment delays (>8 weeks from diagnosis) for Stage I-III colon cancer in the United States and determine how racial, insurance, and geographic disparities manifest and evolve across regions from 2004 to 2021. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. METHODS: We analy

Skin Cancer in Residential Care Facilities: A Scoping Review of Risk, Diagnosis, Psychosocial Impact, and Management.

The older adult population is rising, resulting in a larger number of adults residing in nursing homes. Skin cancer is most commonly diagnosed in older adults. Yet, these individuals often face limited access to advanced dermatologic care, in addition to unique risk factors such as inadequate sun protection and reduced mobility. This review aims to map the current evidence on skin cancer risk and diagnosis, as well as prevention strategies among older adults residing in nursing homes. A search was conducted on PubMed using the algorithm: ((nursing home) OR (assisted living) OR (elderly living

Primary care providers' attitudes toward prostate cancer risk factors at a Veterans Affairs health care facility.

OBJECTIVE: We asked what factors influence primary care providers' decision to screen patients for prostate cancer. METHODS: A survey completed by 175 Veterans Affairs primary care providers queried whether patient anxiety, family history, race, and other assorted risk factors increased their likelihood of screening for prostate cancer. Subsequent questions assessed the degree to which various factors, such as age, comorbidities, and lack of interest, decreased their likelihood of screening. RESULTS: The African American race increased the tendency for screening for 84.6%, followed by a fami

Continuing cancer care in a religious facility: A feasible alternative in the COVID-19 Pandemic Era?

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has stretched most healthcare systems to the point that if no adaptations are made, failure will most likely happen. The Philippine healthcare system, with its meager resources, is very much vulnerable to this. During the start of the pandemic, Bataan General Hospital and Medical Center has been converted to a COVID-19 hub, leaving cancer care and treatment displaced. We describe our experience in the feasibility of using a religious facility as an interim place for continuing oncology treatment. An outpatient chemotherapy unit was set up using the main hall

A Qualitative Analysis of Factors Contributing to Cervical Cancer Screening Implementation in Health Care Facilities in Uganda.

IntroductionCervical cancer prevalence and incidence are high in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Uganda, where screening rates are low, despite government policy recommending screening for all women aged 25-49 every three years. Most prior research focuses on client-related barriers to screening, including women's fears about the screening procedure, lack of partner support, and community-level stigma. Fewer studies elaborate on inner context factors related to health care systems, facilities, and providers. The aim of this study was to use qualitative methods to explore inner context factor

Disparities in accessibility to evidence-based breast cancer care facilities by rural and urban areas in Bavaria, Germany.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC), which is most common in elderly women, requires a multidisciplinary and continuous approach to care. With demographic changes, the number of patients with chronic diseases such as BC will increase. This trend will especially hit rural areas, where the majority of the elderly live, in terms of comprehensive health care. METHODS: Accessibility to several cancer facilities in Bavaria, Germany, was analyzed with a geographic information system. Facilities were identified from the national BC guideline and from 31 participants in a proof-of-concept study from the Br

Healthcare facility volume and evidence-based practice implementation in surgical care of patients with common cancers.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs) can serve as an indicator of quality for common cancers. This study evaluated the impact of hospital volume on EBP implementation for common cancers. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of adults who underwent curative-intent treatment for breast, colon, melanoma, and thyroid cancer from 2010 to 2020 used data from the National Cancer Database. Eight EBP measures, two per disease site, were evaluated across facility volume quartiles using mixed-effects logistic regression models adjusted for patient and facility characteristic

Associations Between Medicaid Insurance, Facility Medicaid Share, and Guideline-concordant Prostate Cancer Care.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the dynamics between both patient-level Medicaid status and facility-level Medicaid share and receipt of guideline-concordant care for localized PCa. METHODS: Using the National Cancer Database, we identified a cohort of individuals aged 21-64 diagnosed with localized PCa from 2014 to 2021. The primary outcome was receipt of guideline-concordant management, defined as active surveillance for "low risk," and either radical prostatectomy or androgen deprivation therapy and radiation therapy for "unfavorable intermediate" and "high risk" PCa. We evaluated the associatio

Challenges associated with limited-resources cancer care facility: Bilateral breast myeloid sarcoma as an example.

UNLABELLED: Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare myeloid malignancy. It can arise before, concurrent with, or following different malignant hematological diseases, most commonly acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome, or myeloproliferative neoplasms. Here we describe a 30-year-old female with AML-M1 who presented to the hematology department with bilateral breast pain and tenderness. Available diagnostic measures including ultrasound of breast and magnetic resonance imaging were used to determine the nature of these breast lumps. MS was definitively diagnosed via biopsy and the patie

From Pap Test to Treatment: Assessing Facility Level Gaps in Cervical Cancer Care in Cape Town.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) 90‑70‑90 cervical cancer elimination targets aim for 90% human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates, 70% cervical screening rates, and 90% treatment rates for women with cervical disease. Although progress has been made in vaccination and screening in South Africa, less is known about treatment coverage following abnormal screening results. We focused on adherence to colposcopy clinic referrals among women with abnormal cytology. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of cervical cytology samples collected in 2022 from women
