Efficacy of intraperitoneal sodium carboxymethylcellulose in preventing postoperative adhesion formation.

Various regimens to reduce postoperative intraperitoneal adhesion formation have been tested; however, none has been consistently successful. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of three compounds instilled into the peritoneal cavity--32% dextran 70, 0.9% normal saline and sodium carboxymethylcellulose--to no therapy on their ability to prevent postoperative adhesion formation in the New Zealand white rabbit. Bilateral posterior uterine horn incisions and cecal and transverse colon abrasions were performed during a two-phased study on each of 25 rabbits that were randomly ass

Evaluating the effect of sodium alginate and sodium carboxymethylcellulose on pulmonary delivery of levofloxacin spray-dried microparticles.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cystic fibrosis commonly suffer from lung infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Recently, the Levofloxacin (LVF) nebulizing solution (Quinsair®) has been prescribed for the antimicrobial management. The sustained-release (SR) dry powder formulation of LVF is a convenient alternative to Quinsair®. It has the potential to enhance patient convenience and decrease the likelihood of drug resistance over time. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we set forth to formulate and evaluate the potential application of sodium alginate (SA) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) fo

Antiadhesive effect of mixed solution of sodium hyaluronate and sodium carboxymethylcellulose after blow-out fracture repair.

Treatment of blow-out fractures is aimed at the prevention of permanent diplopia and cosmetically unacceptable enophthalmos. Porous polyethylene sheets are one of the most common alloplastic implants for blow-out fracture repair. Because adhesion between the porous polyethylene and the orbital soft tissue can result in restrictions of ocular motility, prevention of postoperative adhesion is important in the reconstruction of blow-out fractures. The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of the mixed solution of sodium hyaluronate and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (HACMC) on postopera

Intraperitoneal sodium carboxymethylcellulose administration prevents reformation of peritoneal adhesions following surgical lysis.

Although intraperitoneal administration of sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC) prevents the formation of adhesions following laparotomy in rats, it remains unknown whether SCMC treatment prevents the recurrence of preformed peritoneal adhesions following surgical lysis. Additionally, the optimal amount of SCMC required for adhesion prevention, as well as the effects of SCMC upon the healing of bowel anastomoses, has yet to be determined. To study this, 114 male rats underwent laparotomy and adhesion induction via peeling of the cecal serosa with a gauze sponge. Two weeks later, all animals ag

Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose/Polydopamine Biocellulose Coatings with Enhanced Wet Stability for Implantable Medical Devices.

Sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is a biocompatible and biodegradable derivative of cellulose, making it a promising material for biomedical applications. However, its poor stability in aqueous environments has significantly limited its use in long-term biomedical devices. Here, we present for the first time a simple and controllable method to enhance the wet stability of CMC coatings by cross-linking of CMC and polydopamine (PDA) and self-polymerization of PDA for widespread applications in biomedical devices. A series of CMC/PDA coatings were fabricated on the initial PDA layers by using

Use of bioresorbable membrane (sodium hyaluronate + carboxymethylcellulose) after controlled bowel injuries in a rabbit model.

PURPOSE: Patients in whom enterolysis is performed are at high risk for recurrence of adhesions and for injury during adhesiolysis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the safety of sodium hyaluronate-based bioresorbable membrane (Seprafilm) after myotomy and enterotomy. METHODS: A total of 60 rabbits underwent laparotomy with equal distribution to one of three groups: creation of either three repaired, or three unrepaired myotomies, or three repaired enterotomies. Thus, a total of 180 defects were created in the same anatomic positions. One-half of the animals in each group had th

A sodium hyaluronate carboxymethylcellulose bioresorbable membrane prevents postoperative small-bowel adhesive obstruction after distal gastrectomy.

PURPOSE: It is predictable that since distal gastrectomy (DG) with Billroth I anastomosis involves no procedures caudal to transverse colon, the effects of the surgical wound are the main cause of adhesive obstruction. Thus, it is an appropriate operation to test the efficiency of a synthetic absorbable adhesion barrier (Seprafilm). METHODS: The subjects were 282 patients diagnosed with gastric cancer who underwent open DG with Billroth I anastomosis between 2001 and August, 2005. Seprafilm was not used in any patients operated on before April, 2003 (n = 169), but it was used in all patients

A Simple Technique for the Placement of Seprafilm, a Sodium Hyaluronate or Carboxymethylcellulose Absorbable Barrier, during Laparoscopic Myomectomy.

This report describes a simple technique using conventional instrumentation for the placement of Seprafilm, a sodium hyaluronate or carboxymethylcellulose absorbable barrier for adhesion prevention. A total of 378 women with uterine myomas undergoing laparoscopic myomectomies had 737 Seprafilm pieces placed. Seprafilm sheet was softened through exposure to room air for 5 minutes, cut into 4 pieces (length, 5-10 mm), rolled up alongside a plastic sheet cut from a camera drape cover, and gently placed at the right paracolic gutter. The Seprafilm pieces unfolded semiautomatically on release and w

Synthesis and Characterization of Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose from Sansevieria trifasciata as an Alternative Raw Material for Capsule Shell.

OBJECTIVES: Capsules are pharmaceutical preparations that are enclosed in hard or soft capsule shells made of gelatin. Because gelatin is typically generated from non-halal materials, there is a need for alternative raw materials for making capsule shells, one of which is carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC), which is synthesized from cellulose. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study aims to find alternative raw materials for the manufacture of capsule shells from cellulose-containing Sansevieria trifasciata leaves. Then, the isolated cellulose was treated with sodium Na-CMC using the alkalization and

The use of sodium hyaluronate-carboxymethylcellulose (HA-CMC) barrier in gynecologic malignancies: a retrospective review of outcomes.

Concerns exist regarding the safety of sodium hyaluronate-carboxymethylcellulose (HA-CMC, Seprafilm) adhesion barrier in regard to cancer survival as a result of in vitro data demonstrating that hyaluronan, a component of HA-CMC, may promote tumor growth. We sought to determine whether use of HA-CMC is associated with duration of disease-free or overall survival and rates of immediate complication in patients with gynecologic malignancies. We identified 202 consecutive patients with epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, and primary peritoneal cancer who underwent initial surgical staging or inte

Comparation of brain-targeting chitosan/sodium tripolyphosphate and ovalbumin/sodium carboxymethylcellulose nanoparticles on dihydromyricetin delivery and cognitive impairment in obesity-related Alzheimer's disease.

The brain-gut axis plays an important role in regulating cognitive ability in obesity-related Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we aimed to investigate the correlation between the barrier penetration ability of the DMY nanodelivery system in vivo and the regulation of the gut-brain axis to alleviate cognitive impairment. Brain-targeted peptide (TGN: TGNYKALHPHNG) and DMY loaded chitosan (CS)/sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) nanoparticles (TGN-DMY-CS/TPP-NPs) and ovalbumin (OVA)/sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) nanoparticles (TGN-DMY-OVA/CMC-NPs) were prepared. Anti-biofouling membrane coated with polyvinyl alcohol/sodium carboxymethylcellulose/tannic acid hydrogel for efficient dye/salt separation.

Biofouling is the most severe challenge for separation membranes. In this study, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-based mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)/tannic acid (TA) hydrogel coating exhibited a comprehensive anti-biofouling property and high efficient for dye/salt separation. For the hydrogel layer, ethanol inhibited the cross-linking of the hydrogen bond between the PVA, CMC and TA, forming a uniform "hydrogel paint" applied to the membrane surface using the coating method. Subsequently, the hydrogen bond was re-established by

Effectiveness and short-term safety of modified sodium hyaluronic acid-carboxymethylcellulose at cesarean delivery: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: The rising cesarean birth rate has drawn attention to risks associated with repeat cesarean birth. Prevention of adhesions with adhesion barriers has been promoted as a way to decrease operative difficulty. However, robust data demonstrating effectiveness of such interventions are lacking. OBJECTIVE: We report data from a multicenter trial designed to evaluate the short-term safety and effectiveness of a modified sodium hyaluronic acid (HA)-carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) absorbable adhesion barrier for reduction of adhesions following cesarean delivery. Recovery effects of sodium carboxymethylcellulose-xanthan gum hydrogels containing peptide‑iron complexes against iron deficient anemia in vivo.

In this study, the sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and xanthan gum (XG) were used to prepare the CXM-Fe hydrogels (CMC: 20 mg/mL, XG: 10 mg/mL) with the addition of Mytilus edulis protein hydrolysate‑iron (MEPH-Fe) complexes. The incorporation of MEPH-Fe complexes formed a denser network structure and the CXM-Fe hydrogels had better pH stability as well as gastrointestinal retention ability. Compared with ferrous sulfate and MEPH-Fe complexes, the CXM-Fe hydrogels at moderate doses (Fe2+:2 mg/kg) showed impressive recovery effects on iron deficiency anemia (IDA) mice in terms of hematologi
