Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the head and neck is rare. We report a case of a 56-year-old man with a 6-week history of dysphagia, a neck mass and weight loss. He was diagnosed with a hypopharyngeal large cell NEC (LCNEC) with metastases to multiple sites. He received two cycles of cisplatin and etoposide. Subsequent restaging scan revealed progressive disease. The patient declined further chemotherapy and died shortly after. This is the third case of LCNEC of hypopharynx reported in the English literature and the first to progress on platinum-based chemotherapy. Although LCNEC of the head

OBJECTIVE: The experiences on the treatment of seven consecutive patients with large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) were studied, observed over 6 years from 1992. Since LCNEC was recognized as a separate histological entity, only very few series have been reported. Together with the carcinoids (atypical and typical) and the small-cell lung carcinoma (SCLC), it forms the spectrum of neuroendocrine tumors.
METHODS: Between 1992 and 1997, seven patients who underwent surgical resection were diagnosed as LCNEC postoperatively. Mean age was 65 years (range 54-77 years), five patients were m

Combined large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (CLCNEC) is a rare neuroendocrine carcinoma, accounting for approximately 10% of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC). Mainly composed of coexisting adenocarcinoma components, with strong invasiveness and poor prognosis. The treatment regimen for CLCNEC mainly refers to complete surgical resection as the first choice in the early stage, while patients with stage II or higher require adjuvant treatment. At present, research on CLCNEC is mostly small sample and retrospective, and there is no consensus on whether molecular typing and treatment s

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC) are rare, aggressive high-grade neuroendocrine neoplasms within the neuroendocrine cell lineage spectrum. This manuscript provides a detailed review of published literature on LCNEC of gynecological origin. We performed a PubMed search for material available on gynecologic LCNEC. We analyzed 104 unique cases of gynecologic LCNECs, of which 45 were cervical primary, 45 were ovarian, 13 were uterine, and 1 was vaginal. A total of 45 cases of cervical LCNEC were identified with a median age of 36 years. Median overall survival was 16 months. We identif

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ovary is a recently described tumour entity that is now included in the WHO classification of primary ovarian neoplasms. Although mostly in stage I at diagnosis, this tumour shows an aggressive clinical behaviour with subsequent metastases and mean survival is less than one year. In addition to the neuroendocrine carcinoma, most cases also have a malignant surface epithelial tumour component. I here report a 64-year-old woman who was operated on for a right-sided ovarian large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma without a surface epithelial component, which

AIM: We highlight the occurrence of an unusual neuroendocrine tumour, a large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, arising from the thymus.
CASE DETAILS: A 68-year-old man with a history of cigarette smoking had a large mediastinal tumour arising from the thymus removed. Two years later the tumour recurred; it was debulked surgically but the patient died 2 months later: Histological examination of both tumour specimens revealed a tumour with an endocrine pattern, composed of large pleomorphic cells with large nuclei and prominent nucleoli. The mitotic count ranged from 19 to 26 per 10 high-power fi

We describe a rare case of primary mediastinal large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) with brain metastases. A 65-year-old man presented with a mediastinal abnormal shadow on chest radiography. A computed tomography-guided needle biopsy of the mediastinal tumor revealed malignant cells. After biopsy, dyspnea, leg weakness and a waddling gait rapidly developed. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed three masses with ring enhancements. His pro-GRP value was 95.5 pg/ml. Since the cerebellar tumor extended to the brain stem, it was removed surgically. The brain tumor demonstrated L

Large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the thymus is a rare cancer that is more aggressive and leads to a poorer prognosis than other thymic epithelial tumors. A 67-year-old woman presented with an anterior mediastinal mass in the thymus. Histological examination after thymectomy revealed large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma in the thymus. Although the patient received postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy, a distant relapse was detected 6 months after the surgery. We reviewed nine cases of this rare cancer that have been reported in Japan. There is no evidence of to support postoperative

Neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare neoplasms of the larynx and hypopharynx. Tumours composed of both neuroendocrine and squamous cell elements are very rare. We report a case of a primary hypopharyngeal carcinoma composed of both squamous cell and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and discuss the treatment of this patient and management of neuroendocrine carcinomas of the larynx and hypopharynx.

The authors studied the clinical and pathologic features of 38 small cell carcinomas of the large intestine. Most were located in the right colon. Overlying adenomas were present in 45% and squamous differentiation in 21% of tumors. Endocrine differentiation was present in all tumors by at least one method; neuron-specific enolase, dense-core granules, and synaptophysin were present in most cases. Seventy-one percent of tumors metastasized to the liver; 64% of patients were dead at five months follow-up. Twenty-one poorly differentiated adenocarcinomas and undifferentiated carcinomas of the la

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is an extremely rare malignant tumor of the colon, presenting with more severe clinical outcomes in comparison to colonic adenocarcinoma. There are very few reported cases in the literature. We hereby add our voice to the incidence of this disease by presenting the first report of a patient with ileocolic intussusception secondary to a large cell neuroendocrine cancer of the cecum. The patient was a 48-year-old woman who presented with acute onset of generalized abdominal pain and leukocytosis. CT scan revealed an ileocecal intussusception and multip

OBJECTIVE: To report the first case in the literature of a primary large-cell undifferentiated carcinoma (LCUC) of the ureter with a very aggressive behavior and dismal prognosis.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A 60-year-old woman with a history of intermittent macroscopic hematuria and mild to moderate right flank pain was admitted to the Department of Urology. Tissue biopsies and cytological samples were taken. Pathologic examination was consistent with LCUC.
CONCLUSION: LCUC of the ureter is an aggressive tumor with a high proliferation index. Patients might be diagnosed at an ad

Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) is the rarest type of urinary tract malignancy. Herein, we report a case of LCNEC that arose in the ureter of a 78-year-old Japanese man with a history of ascending colon cancer that had been excised by a right hemicolectomy. Left-sided hydronephrosis associated with the ureteral tumor was discovered during follow-up. A left nephroureterectomy combined with a partial resection of the urinary bladder was performed because atypical cells were detected using voided urine cytology. A histopathological examination revealed that the ureteral tumor containe

We present the clinicopathological features of eight cases of large cell undifferentiated bladder carcinoma not otherwise specified (LCUBC). LCUBC was characterised by sheets of large polygonal or round cells with moderate to abundant cytoplasm and distinct cell borders. The LCUBC component varied from 90 to 100% of the tumour specimen with five cases showing pure LCUBC. The architectural pattern of the tumour varied from infiltrating tumour to solid expansile nests with focal (<5%) discohesive growth pattern in two cases. Immunohistochemical staining demonstrated that LCUBC cases were positiv

INTRODUCTION: TROP2 antibody-drug conjugates have shown promising anti-tumour activity, but neither the activity of these agents nor TROP2 expression has been well studied in pulmonary large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC), a rare and aggressive cancer type. We aimed to (i) determine the prevalence of TROP2 immunoreactivity in LCNEC; (ii) assess whether TROP2 immunoreactivity in LCNEC is related to RB1 loss on IHC or to the presence of NSCLC or SCLC components and (iii) determine whether TROP2 immunoreactivity in LCNEC has prognostic significance.
METHODS: TROP2 immunohistochemistry was

Duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms (D-NENs) are uncommon tumors that account for a fraction of duodenal tumors. Although often incidentally discovered, those in the ampullary or peri-ampullary regions may present with symptoms due to biliary or gastrointestinal obstruction, including obstruction or bleeding. We describe a 65-year-old male who presented with fatigue, altered mentation, and melena. His evaluation was notable for severe anemia, metabolic derangements, and laboratory findings with concern for tumor lysis syndrome. Emergent management with hemodialysis and supportive care stabilized

The clinical characteristics of large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) as a primary tracheal tumour are unclear due to its rarity. We report the case of a man in his 70s who presented with dyspnoea. Further imaging revealed an intratracheal tumour. The tumour was bronchoscopically debulked to secure the airway, resulting in immediate relief of his dyspnoea. A small lesion in the left main bronchus was also detected. The pathological diagnosis was LCNEC. Positron emission tomography suggested that the trachea was the primary site. Incidental COVID-19 infection delayed his second bronchosco

We report a case of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the uterine cervix. A 33-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of irregular vaginal bleeding and suspicious cervix. Transvaginal ultrasound showed a 3×3.8 cm cervical mass with a marked increase in the blood flow. MRI pelvis showed an exophytic tumour with left external iliac lymph node metastasis. Immunohistochemistry of the tumour cells showed strong positivity for the neuroendocrine markers synaptophysin and a very high Ki67 proliferation index. A diagnosis of high-grade large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the uterine c

BACKGROUND: Primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the gallbladder and biliary tract are rare, with pure large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC) being exceedingly rare and with a particularly poor prognosis.
METHODS: We performed a review of published data on biliary tract large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas in PubMed.
RESULTS: Preliminary search revealed over 2000 results but we found only 12 cases of pure large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas of biliary tract noted in literature to date. Because it commonly presents with non-specific symptoms of abdominal pain and jaundice, diagnosis is
