Arteriovenous malformations of the cerebellar vermis.

Fifteen cerebellar vermian arteriovenous malformations were surgically treated over a 7-year period. Intracranial hemorrhage was the presenting symptom in 73% of the cases and recurrent bleeding episodes occurred in 60%. Computed tomographic scans demonstrated the site of the malformation in 80% and documented the presence of intracerebral bleeding in all posthemorrhage patients. Angiography revealed two consistent patterns of arterial supply depending on the involvement by the malformation of the superior inferior cerebellar vermis. All lesions were surgically removed via a midline suboccipit

Hemorrhagic Epidermoid Cyst in Cerebellar Vermis.

Intracranial epidermoid cysts are usually located in the paramedian regions with characteristic imaging features. Intracystic hemorrhage is rarely reported with most in the cerebellopontine angle area. We described a case of hemorrhagic epidermoid cyst in cerebellar vermis. The patient was a 21-year-old male presenting with a first episode of convulsive seizure attack as the initial and sole symptom. Head computed tomography showed a mass lesion in the cerebellar vermis with high density and nodular low density in the back of the lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed most of the lesion w

Computation of egomotion in the macaque cerebellar vermis.

The nodulus and uvula (lobules X and IX of the vermis) receive mossy fibers from both vestibular afferents and vestibular nuclei neurons and are thought to play a role in spatial orientation. Their properties relate to a sensory ambiguity of the vestibular periphery: otolith afferents respond identically to translational (inertial) accelerations and changes in orientation relative to gravity. Based on theoretical and behavioral evidence, this sensory ambiguity is resolved using rotational cues from the semicircular canals. Recordings from the cerebellar cortex have identified a neural correlat

Cerebellar vermis joins the brain's social network.

The cerebellum is more than just motor control: over the past 30 years, the notion that the “little brain” participates in cognitive functions and emotional response has grown to encompass social-related behaviors. Chao et al. bring to light the role of the cerebellar vermis in orchestrating a specific component of social memory in mice.

Cerebellar vermis proteome of chronic alcoholic individuals.

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar changes are commonly associated with alcoholism and chronic alcohol consumption can produce profound impairments in motor functioning and various aspects of cognition. Although the mechanisms underlying alcohol-induced changes in the cerebellar vermis are poorly understood, observations in the alcoholic vermis are thought to be consequential to common alcohol-related factors, particularly thiamine deficiency. METHODS: In the present study, we used a proteomics-based approach to compare protein expression profiles of the cerebellar vermis from human alcoholic individuals

Cerebellar vermis involvement in cocaine-related behaviors.

Although the cerebellum is increasingly being viewed as a brain area involved in cognition, it typically is excluded from circuitry considered to mediate stimulant-associated behaviors since it is low in dopamine. Yet, the primate cerebellar vermis (lobules II-III and VIII-IX) has been reported to contain axonal dopamine transporter immunoreactivity (DAT-IR). We hypothesized that DAT-IR-containing vermis areas would be activated in cocaine abusers by cocaine-related cues and, in healthy humans, would accumulate DAT-selective ligands. We used BOLD fMRI to determine whether cocaine-related cues

Height of the cerebellar vermis and gestational age at birth.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to construct reference ranges of the neonatal cerebellar vermis height with respect to the gestational age at birth. METHODS: This observational study assessed 434 neonates born at 25-42 weeks' gestation. The neonates were singleton and appropriate in size for gestational age, and did not exhibit any abnormalities or neonatal disease. Gestational age was based on the date of the last menstrual period and confirmed by ultrasound examination performed within the 12(th) week of pregnancy. Sonographic measurements of the height of the cerebellar vermis

Reading errors in patients with cerebellar vermis lesions.

Dyslexia, both developmental and acquired, has been considered the result of cerebrocortical dysfunction, affecting the temporo-parieto-occipital brain regions. However, dyslexia may involve abnormalities of the magnocellular component of the visual system, leading to binocular instability or alterations of accommodation. To test the hypothesis of cerebellar involvement in the reading process -- justified by its emergent role in language and cognition -- we studied 10 patients with cerebellar vermis/paravermis lesions using reading tests and we compared the results with those produced by 10 no

Uncommon syndromes of cerebellar vermis aplasia. II: Tecto-cerebellar dysraphia with occipital encephalocele.

Two new cases are reported of a rare syndrome of malformation consisting of occiptal encephalocele, aplasia of the vermis and deformity of the tectum. Less consistent components are aplasia of mammillary bodies, fusion of thalami, anomalies of cerebral gyral patterns, bifid atlas or bifid occipital squame, elevation of torcular, and cervical hydromyelia. One of the present cases had survived to the age of eight years with a ventricular shunt. This syndrome, of which five cases are known, is thought to be a tandem malformation in which either an occipital dysraphia or an encephalocele induces a

Sporadic solid hemangioblastoma of the cerebellar vermis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastomas are rare, benign tumors of the central nervous system, most commonly affecting the cerebellum, brainstem, and spinal cord. They are often associated with von Hippel-Lindau disease but can also occur sporadically. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report presents a 60-year-old male with a sporadic solid hemangioblastoma of the cerebellar vermis, detailing his clinical presentation, radiological findings, surgical management, and postoperative outcome. CONCLUSION: Although rare, these tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis of posterior fossa masses in

Social memory deficit caused by dysregulation of the cerebellar vermis.

Social recognition memory (SRM) is a key determinant of social interactions. While the cerebellum emerges as an important region for social behavior, how cerebellar activity affects social functions remains unclear. We selectively increased the excitability of molecular layer interneurons (MLIs) to suppress Purkinje cell firing in the mouse cerebellar vermis. Chemogenetic perturbation of MLIs impaired SRM without affecting sociability, anxiety levels, motor coordination or object recognition. Optogenetic interference of MLIs during distinct phases of a social recognition test revealed the cere

Palatoglossal fusion with cleft palate and hypoplasia of cerebellar vermis.

A new-born male presented within 12 h of birth with respiratory distress. On examination and workup, he had palatoglossal fusion, cleft palate and hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis. A 2.5 Fr endotracheal tube was inserted into the pharynx through nostril as a nasopharyngeal stent, following which his respiratory distress improved. Once child was optimised, then feeding was started by nasogastric tube and feeds were tolerated well. Elective tracheostomy and gastrostomy were done, followed by release of adhesions between the tongue and palate at a later stage. Review of literature suggests tha

A quantitative histological study of the cerebellar vermis in alcoholic patients.

A quantitative histological study was made of the cerebellar vermis in 10 male alcoholic and 8 age-matched control cases. The mean Purkinje cell loss was 21% in the alcoholic group. The small rostral and caudal lobes were most severely affected. The mean Purkinje cell density per unit length of foliae showed similar changes. Histological measurements of the area of the molecular, granular and medullary layers of the cerebellar vermis showed that the molecular layer varied in the degree of shrinkage between lobes (from 11 to 39%) while the granular layer showed a consistent shrinkage (9 to 10%)

Atrophy of the cerebellar vermis in ageing. A morphometric and histologic study.

Morphometric analysis of the cerebellar vermis in 67 non-alcoholic men between 36 and 94 years of age showed a significant decline in Purkinje cell densities with increasing age in all parts of the cerebellar vermis. However, the nerve cell loss was much more severe in the superior than in the inferior part. There were large individual variations and one-half of the subjects over 80 years showed densities similar to those in the sixties. By independent evaluation, atrophy of the superior vermis was diagnosed histologically in 16 cases, 13 of whom were over 70 years of age. There was a good cor

Brainstem-vermis and brainstem-tentorium angles allow accurate categorization of fetal upward rotation of cerebellar vermis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of the brainstem-vermis (BV) and brainstem-tentorium (BT) angles in the differential diagnosis of upward rotation of the fetal cerebellar vermis. METHODS: The BV and BT angles were measured retrospectively on median sonographic views of the brain in 31 fetuses at 19-28 weeks' gestation with upward rotation of the cerebellar vermis due to Blake's pouch cyst (n = 12), Dandy-Walker malformation (n = 12) and cerebellar vermian hypoplasia (n = 7). Eighty normal fetuses at 20-24 weeks were included as controls. RESULTS: In the control group, BV and BT angles were 9.
