Co-sleeping and clinical correlates in children seen at a child guidance clinic.

INTRODUCTION: Co-sleeping or bed-sharing is a common practice that has been little researched. While often viewed as being "cultural" in nature, there is a suggestion that it may be a parental response to sleep problems. Some studies link co-sleeping with behavioural and temperamental difficulties. The objectives of the current study were to determine the prevalence of co-sleeping and how they relate to sleeping problems among a cohort of children and adolescents seen in a child guidance clinic. METHODS: Parents or guardians of all new patients seen at the child guidance clinic were asked to

[When a child triggers maternal trauma: clinical considerations in interactive guidance].

This article presents a clinical analysis of the first two sessions of interactive guidance therapy conducted with a mother diagnosed with complex post-traumatic stress disorder. Using a clinical case study, it demonstrates how the child's everyday behaviors can reactivate the mother's traumatic experiences and influence mother-child interactions at an early stage. Interactive guidance appears to be a relevant approach for making these dynamics visible in the here and now, supporting parental emotional regulation, and fostering maternal sensitivity. The text also examines the limitations of th

Navigating change: The journey of the child guidance clinic before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mental health is crucial for child and adolescent development, but lack of resources often leads to silent suffering and missed opportunities. Establishing child guidance clinics (CGCs) is a step toward holistic care. During COVID, children faced disruptions to schooling, isolation, family stress, and increased digital exposure, leading to a rise in mental health issues. The stressors have left a long-term psychological impact on our lives even after years post-COVID. The study examines the 10-year journey of a CGC that which navigated the changes brought about by COVID-19, highlighting the im

Clinical profiles and hospitalization patterns among abused children referred by Child Guidance Centers in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Child Guidance Centers (CGCs) play a central role in child protection in Japan, yet evidence on abused children referred to psychiatric services remains limited. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 84 children referred by CGCs (2019–2023) to a child and adolescent psychiatry department. Demographics, types of abuse, neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs), prior psychiatric care, hospitalization, and experiences of sexual violence by non-caregivers were extracted from medical records and CGC referral forms. Fisher’s exact test, Pearson’s chi-square test, and the Wilcoxon rank-sum test

Pilot Testing Behavior Therapy for Chronic Tic Disorders in Neurology and Developmental Pediatrics Clinics.

Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is an efficacious treatment with limited regional availability. As neurology and pediatric clinics are often the first point of therapeutic contact for individuals with tics, the present study assessed preliminary treatment response, acceptability, and feasibility of an abbreviated version, modified for child neurology and developmental pediatrics clinics. Fourteen youth (9-17) with Tourette disorder across 2 child neurology clinics and one developmental pediatrics clinic participated in a small case series. Clinician-rated tic severity (Ya

[Multifamily therapy in children with learning disabilities].

Multifamily therapy is an evidence-based method used in the treatment and prevention of severe psychiatric disorders, behavioral problems and physical illnesses in children, adolescents and adults. For preventive family-oriented work with children with learning disorders there is a lack of therapeutic models. This article presents results from an innovative pilot project--multiple family groups for families with a learning disabled child of primary school age (six to eleven years old). Based on a systemic approach, this resource-oriented program integrates creative, activity-based intervention

Preventive health services for young children in Israel: historical development and current challenges.

PURPOSE: Pediatric preventive health services are delivered in many different formats throughout the world. In Israel, these services for young children are provided in designated Maternal Child Health Clinics (MCHC). The history and operation of Israel's MCHC have been described primarily in the Hebrew language medical literature with most of these reports being over a decade old. This paper provides an up to date summary of the evolution and current care in Israel's one-hundred-year old model for the provision of preschool preventive health services. As these clinics have been recognized by

Breaking the cycle of violence: an examination of factors relevant to treatment follow-through.

To examine differences between a group of battered mothers who followed through with treatment recommended for their children and those who did not, 10 women from each of two comparable women's shelters who followed through with recommended therapy for their children were compared with 10 women from each shelter who did not follow through, in regard to age, years of education, job history, economic status, and prior exposure to therapy. Analysis indicated that women who followed through had significantly more years of education than those women who did not follow-through. Furthermore, women wh

Parental perceptions of body weight and appetite in infants and toddlers with cystic fibrosis.

Nutritional status has clinical relevance and is a target of guidance to parents of children with cystic fibrosis (CF). Growth is routinely monitored in CF clinics but there is no standardized way of assessing appetitive behaviors or parents' perceptions of their children's appetite. Greater understanding of these factors could improve clinical guidance regarding parent feeding behaviors. We therefore aimed to assess parent perceptions of child weight, and parent reports of child appetite using the Baby Eating Behavior Questionnaire (BEBQ), in a sample of infants and toddlers with CF, compared

European Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) practical guidance for clinicians and mental health services regarding child to adult mental health service transitions and managed discharge at the service boundary.

The European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) clinical guidance on transition supports care across the child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) and adult mental health service (AMHS) boundary throughout Europe. It outlines practices, procedures, and service environments to promote appropriate, safe and timely transition of young people from child and adolescent to adult mental health services or alternative care settings. The guidance addresses planning, decision-making and discharge management at CAMHS and, where needed, continuity in AMHS. The development of the

PURPOSE: The association between language delay and behavior problems in toddlers was examined in 2 studies, 1 conducted in a developmental clinic in New Jersey (Study 1; N = 83) and the other conducted in a developmental clinic in New York (Study 2; N = 103). METHOD: In both clinics, parents of 18- to 35-month-olds completed the Language Development Survey (LDS) and the Child Behavior Checklist/1.5-5 (CBCL). In Study 2, the Preschool Language Scale-Fourth Edition (PLS-4) was also administered. Neurodevelopmental delay (ND) and pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) symptoms were also assesse

Mood disorders in children with oppositional defiant disorder: a pilot study.

The nature and prevalence of comorbid mood disorders were explored in a group of 28 latency-age children diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder. Findings are preliminary in nature but suggest that children with oppositional defiant disorder are at significant risk for low-grade depressive illness and that this may commonly be overlooked in the presence of their primary disorder's more overt symptoms.

[ Symptom Severity and the Role of Friendship in Children at a Child Guidance Center from Parents' Point of View].

By means of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) it was assessed how much children who are attended to a child guidance center suffer from behavior problems and emotional distress. Furthermore, the interaction between straining and supporting influences was examined. Results show that symptom severity lies in the range of clinical significance. Children of divorced parents show more internalizing as well as externalizing problems than children of nuclear families. High social integration is correlated with lower psychic symptomatic - yet, this finding was dependent on family situation: While fr
