In women, age-related bone loss is associated with increased risk of bone fracture. Existing therapies are associated with severe side effects; thus, there is a need to find alternative medicines with less or optimal side effects. Cissus quadrangularis (CQ), an Ayurvedic medicine used to enhance fracture healing, was tested for its bone protective properties and studied to discern the mechanism by which it is beneficial to bone. Female Sprague Dawley rats were either sham operated or ovariectomized and were fed CQ for 3 months. Several biochemical markers, cytokines and hormones were assayed.

OBJECTIVES: Hyperglycemia-induced SIRT1, DNMT1, SODs, as well as oxidative stress, play a pivotal role in the progression of diabetic nephropathy. Cissus quadrangularis, holds antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity; however, a direct link between its activity and prevention of diabetic nephropathy has not been ascertained yet. Accordingly, we aimed to delineate the protective effect of ethanolic extract of Cissus quadrangularis (EECQ) against high-fat diet/streptozotocin (HFD/STZ) induced diabetic nephropathy rats.
METHODS: The control group was fed with a normal chow diet. Rats kept on an HFD

Cissus quadrangularis is a succulent, perennial plant belonging to the family Vitaceae typically found in Asia and Africa's tropical and subtropical forest zones. It is an ancient medicinal plant, containing phytosterols, polyphenols, flavonoids, carbohydrates, and ascorbic acid. Due to the presence of phytosterols it plays a crucial role in bone fracture healing. However, due to the limited resources of these medicinal plants there is a need to search for a reservoir of biologically active metabolites. This medicinal property of the plants therefore may be attributed to the endophytic fungi w

Cissus setosa is an indigenous medicinal herb commonly used for the treatment of gastro ulcers. In the current investigation the aerial methanolic extract of C. setosa was investigated for their antiulcer activity using pylorus ligation and ethanol in experimental rats. The extract was administered at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg b.w. orally for 3 days. However, higher dose of the extract subsequently reduced gastric ulcer induced aberrations by pylorus ligation (70.05%) and ethanol (78.16%) as judged by their altered biochemical parameters such as free acidity, total acidity, total carbohyd

Osteoporosis is a public health problem which is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Growth factors are produced locally in the bone and control cellular events such as induction of bone growth. Signaling through the Insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I receptor (IGF-IR) by locally synthesized IGF - I or IGF-II in osteoblast is considered crucial for normal development and for bone remodeling. Traditional use of Cissus quadrangularis (C. quadrangularis) in the treatment of bone disorders have been documented, however its regulatory effects on IGF system components remain largely

Infrared (IR), vibratory bed assisted infrared (VIR), vacuum infrared (VC-IR), and vibratory bed assisted vacuum infrared (VC-VIR) drying of Cissus quadrangularis Linn. (CQ) were conducted. The objective was to investigate the effects of vibration, vacuum, and material thickness on IR drying of CQ. VC-VIR drying of 5-mm CQ provided the highest maximum drying rate (DR) of 0.258 g water/g dry matter·min. Although the vacuum operation contributed to improved effective moisture diffusivity (D eff ), it consumed high energy and degraded active compounds of CQ. VIR drying could be a more promising t
