Effect of trabeculectomy on corneal endothelial cell loss.

AIM: To investigate changes in corneal endothelial cell density (CECD) after trabeculectomy. METHODS: This prospective, observational study followed 117 eyes of 117 patients for 2 years after trabeculectomy. The central cornea was examined by corneal specular microscopy prior to and at every 6 months after the surgery. Survival analysis of patients who exhibited a 10% or less reduction of the postoperative CECD compared with preoperative levels was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier survival curve. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate prognostic factors for decreasing CECD. RES

[Effect of viscoelasticity on corneal endothelial cell loss in phacoemulsification].

UNLABELLED: One of the most important factors for successful intraocular surgery is deep anterior chamber which is maintained using viscoelastics that protect corneal endothelial cells. This single endothelial cell layer may sustain a varying degree of injury during surgery and is known to be incapable of regeneration. THE AIM: Of the study was to determine optimal visoelastics for the protection of corneal endothelial cells during phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A series of 156 patients were included in this prospective study. Patients were rando

Corneal endothelial cell loss after phacoemulsification using nuclear cracking procedures.

This study assessed corneal endothelial damage in endocapsular phacoemulsification surgery using a nuclear cracking procedure in which the nucleus was divided into four quadrants and emulsified. Forty-five eyes had phacoemulsification using this technique, and 33 eyes had phacoemulsification using undivided sculpting techniques (without cracking). We examined the extent of endothelial cell loss at one and three months after surgery using specular microscopy. We also measured ultrasound time, time spent for phacoemulsification, and infusion volume during surgery. Endothelial cell loss was signi

Effect of shear stress on attachment of corneal endothelial cells in association with corneal endothelial cell loss after laser iridotomy.

PURPOSE: Laser iridotomy often causes bullous keratopathy; however, the mechanism is unclear. We investigated whether changes in aqueous humor hydrodynamics after laser iridotomy have any role in corneal endothelial cell loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Porcine corneal endothelial cells were plated onto glass slides. Following 1 or 3 hours for adhesion, the endothelial cells were exposed to shear stresses (0.1-10 dyne/cm) for 15 minutes, and the number of detached cells was counted. In addition, the pressure and shear stress on corneal endothelial layer were calculated in a virtual model of laser

Corneal oedema and endothelial cell loss after iris-clip lens implantation.

Lens implantation as a form of replacement surgery has some clear advantages over other forms of aphakic correction. The most feared complication of this type of operation is bullous keratopathy. A short-term study was carried out in two comparable groups of patients to assess corneal oedema and endothelial cell loss after simple cataract extraction and after iris-clip lens implantation following intracapsular extraction as a primary procedure. All patients were randomly chosen to have one or other procedure. The results indicate that lens implantation causes greater postoperative corneal oede
