Corynebacterium-associated skin infections.

BACKGROUND: Corynebacterium spp. are diphtheroid bacteria responsible for pitted keratolysis, a common plantar infection confined to the thick stratum corneum. AIM: To study a series of demographic features of patients suffering from pitted keratolysis, and to present a review of the Corynebacterium-associated infections, including pitted keratolysis, erythrasma, and trichobacteriosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 2-year, two-center, prospective survey assessed the demographics of pitted keratolysis, including age, gender, site of infection, symptoms, patients' complaints, the use of protective

Corynebacterium Species Rarely Cause Orthopedic Infections.

Corynebacterium spp. are rarely considered pathogens, but data on Corynebacterium spp. as a cause of orthopedic infections are sparse. Therefore, we asked how often Corynebacterium spp. caused an infection in a defined cohort of orthopedic patients with a positive culture. In addition, we aimed to determine the species variety and the susceptibility of isolated strains to define potential treatment strategies. We retrospectively assessed all bone and joint samples that were collected between 2006 and 2015 from an orthopedic ward and that were positive for Corynebacterium spp. by culture. The i

Cutaneous infections due to Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

Toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae was grown from skin lesions of 44 indigent patients seen at the emergency or out-patient departments of this hospital, 43 of them within the last 16 months of the study period. In all cases staphylococci or hemolytic streptococci were also present in the wounds. An increase in the incidence of clinical diphtheria occurred in the few months preceding and overlapping the period of recognition of the cutaneous infections. The gravis strains, which accounted for the majority of the infections, were sensitive to erythromycin and to penicillin, but were relative

Corynebacterium guaraldiae sp. nov.: a new species of Corynebacterium from human infections.

Non-diphtheria Corynebacterium species (NDC) belonging to the human skin and mucosa microbiota are frequently neglected as contaminants. However, reports of human infections by Corynebacterium spp. have increased considerably in recent years. In this study, a group of six NDC isolates of urine (n = 5) and sebaceous cyst (n = 1) from two South American countries were identified at genus level or misidentified based on API® Coryne and genetic/molecular analyses. The 16S rRNA (99.09-99.56%) and rpoB (96.18-97.14%) gene sequence similarities of the isolates were higher when compared with Corynebac

Corynebacterium minutissimum infection.

Two cases of infection due to Corynebacterium minutissimum are described. On the basis of biochemical tests the organisms were thought at first to be Corynebacterium jeikeium. Methods of distinguishing between these species and the role of C. minutissimum in the pathogenesis of erythrasma and other skin infections are discussed.

Corynebacterium diphtheriae Infections, South Africa, 2015-2023.

We reviewed Corynebacterium spp. infection cases reported in South Africa during 2015-2023. We analyzed 84 isolates from 83 patients with C. diphtheriae, as well as 1 C. belfantii and 3 C. ulcerans isolates. Among C. diphtheriae cases, we observed respiratory diphtheria (26/83 patients [31%]), endocarditis (14/83 [17%]), cutaneous diphtheria (22/83 [27%]), nonspecific respiratory illnesses (5/83 [6%]), and asymptomatic carriage (16/83 [19%]). The median patient age was 19 (range 0-88) years. Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccination was incomplete for 26% (5/19) or unknown for 68% (13/19) of ch

Human infections with Actinomyces pyogenes (Corynebacterium pyogenes).

Actinomyces pyogenes (Corynebacterium pyogenes), a well-known pathogen in many animals, was isolated from 11 Danish patients since 1968. Bacteriologic characteristics and clinical pictures of the patients are described. Ability to hydrolyze gelatine, to produce beta-glucuronidase, to reach with antisera against group-G streptococci, and to produce acid from xylose differentiates A. pyogenes from Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, with which it has at times been confused. Actinomyces pyogenes is an established, but often misrecognized, human pathogen that should be better known to clinical microbiol

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis Infections in Alpacas (Vicugna pacos).

Alpacas are the major camelid species in Europe held for hobbies, animal-aided therapy, and commercial reasons. As a result, health-related issues associated with alpacas are of growing significance. This especially holds true for one of the most serious infectious diseases, caseous lymphadenitis, which is caused by the bacterial pathogen Corynebacterium (C.) pseudotuberculosis. Our study focuses on post-mortem examinations, the laboratory diagnostic tool ELISA, and the immunoblot technique for the detection of specific antibodies against C. pseudotuberculosis and detection of the causative pa

[Screening of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Corynebacterium ulcerans and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis in throat swab specimens of children with upper respiratory tract infections].

Although a significant decrease has been reported in the incidence of diphteria in many regions of the world following the routine diphtheria immunization programs, the emergence of new cases indicated that toxigenic strains are still circulating in the community. Diphtheria vaccine does not provide protection against asymptomatic carriage and colonization of non-toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It is a known fact that invasive infections may arise from non-toxigenic C.diphtheriae strains that the non-toxigenic strains can become toxigenic strains leading to diphteria. It is also known t

Infections, methods of diagnosis, and antibiotic resistance of Corynebacterium minutissimum.

Corynebacterium minutissimum (C. minutissimum) usually causes a chronic skin infection called erythrasma, which is often caused by infection between the toes and wrinkled areas in the body armpits, under the breasts. The bacterium can cause other diseases such as venous catheter infections, sepsis, orthopedic infections, abscesses, invasive infections, meningitis, endocarditis, and pyelonephritis. Various methods that have been introduced for C. minutissimum detection include gas chromatography method, on-plate-testing method, carbon substrate as assimilation, CB plus rapid evaluation system,

Cutaneous infections with Corynebacterium diphtheriae in France: A cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous diphtheria typically develops on preexisting skin lesions and presents as painful, well-defined ulcers covered by false membranes or as exudate, usually on the limbs. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report on six cases of cutaneous diphtheria recently diagnosed in France. Diagnosis was confirmed through microbiological testing of skin swabs, which identifiedCorynebacterium diphtheriae non-toxigenic strains. RESULTS: All patients presented with painful ulcerations with identifiedCorynebacterium diphtheriae non-toxigenic strains. All patients were treated with a 14-day course

[Pneumonia by Corynebacterium pseudodiphteriticum: an infection to consider].

Corynebacterium pseudodiphteriticum has been considered a very infrequent respiratory pathogen. We report three cases of pneumonia due to C. pseudodiphteriticum, describing their clinical and microbiological features. There were two patients with pre-existing chronic respiratory disease, one of their with steroidal therapy, and other associated with endotracheal intubation. The diagnostic was made by Gram stain and quantitative cultures from respiratory tract specimens. All patients were cured after treatment with amoxicillin-clavulanate, ceftriaxone and vancomycin respectively. C. pseudodipht

Antimicrobial treatment of Corynebacterium striatum invasive infections: a systematic review.

The aim of this study was to establish an evidence-based guideline for the antibiotic treatment of Corynebacterium striatum infections. Several electronic databases were systematically searched for clinical trials, observational studies or individual cases on patients of any age and gender with systemic inflammatory response syndrome, harboring C. striatum isolated from body fluids or tissues in which it is not normally present. C. striatum had to be identified as the only causative agent of the invasive infection, and its isolation from blood, body fluids or tissues had to be confirmed by one

Interdigital foot infections: Corynebacterium minutissimum and agents of superficial mycoses.

Interdigital foot infections are mostly caused initially by dermatophytes, yeasts and less frequently by bacteria. Erythrasma caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum can be confused with superficial mycoses. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of the etiologic agents of superficial mycoses and the frequency of Corynebacterium minutissimum in interdigital foot infections. All the samples obtained from the 121 patients with interdigital foot infections were examined directly with the use of 20% potassium hydroxide mounts and Gram stain under the microscope and cultured on Saboura

Comparative genomic and phenotypic analysis of Corynebacterium macginleyi from ocular infections.

Corynebacterium macginleyi is an opportunistic pathogen linked to ocular infections, but comprehensive genomic studies remain scarce, especially in China. This study characterized its genomic features, virulence potential, and antimicrobial resistance using 13 clinical isolates and 27 public genomes. Methods included matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), average nucleotide identity (ANI), whole-genome sequencing, Clusters of Orthologous Groups/Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes annotation, core-single nucleotide polymorphism phylogeny
