Toxicity of Crepis lacera in grazing ruminants.

BACKGROUND: Crepis lacera is a plant from the Asteraceae family that is common in the Mediterranean region. Farmers believe that this plant may be deadly to small ruminants in areas of southern Italy. However, scientific evidence is lacking, and no proof exists that C. lacera is toxic to ruminants. Necropsies conducted on four sheep revealed lesions in their livers and kidneys. RESULTS: In the current study, we described sheep poisoning and isolated secondary metabolites from Crepis lacera to assess the metabolites' biological activity both in vitro and in vivo. Phytochemical study of the aer

Chemical constituents of Crepis napifera (Franch.) Babc. and their anti-inflammatory activities.

A chemical study of Crepis napifera led to the isolation and identification of four compounds. Spectroscopic analysis revealed that these compounds belong to the class of eudesmane sesquiterpenes;guaiacane sesquiterpenes and their derivatives, including two novel compounds named Huanyangshen A (1) and Huanyangshen B (2). The absolute configurations of these new compounds were established through the comparison of experimental and calculated ECD spectra. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory properties of these compounds were assessed by evaluating their ability to inhibit LPS-induced NO producti

Hepatoprotective properties of Crepis rueppellii and Anisotes trisulcus: two traditional medicinal plants of Yemen.

Pharmacological investigations were carried out to evaluate the hepatoprotective effects of Crepis rueppellii and Anisotes trisulcus. Ethanolic extracts of these plants were investigated for their ability to reduce mortality of mice after ethanol intoxication and to lower the activities of plasma glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT) after carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatitis in rats. Crepis and Anisotes extracts and a 50:50 mixture of both at 200 mg/kg presented significant hepatoprotective effects in both experimental situations. The traditional therapeutic indications of these plants have b

Structural analysis and antidiabetic activity study of three acidic-type polysaccharides from Crepis crocea (Lam.) Babc.

In this article, we analyzed the structures of three acidic hetero-chain polysaccharides (CTP3-B, CTP3-C, and CTP3-D) fractionated from the herb Crepis crocea (Lam.) Babc. by a combination of ethanol precipitation, dialysis and gel permeation chromatography. Three polysaccharides were all highly branched polysaccharide. KK-Ay mice were chosen to determine the hypoglycemic effect of CTP3. The anti-diabetic activity of CTP3 was explored in detail from the aspects of body weight, daily dietary intake, blood glucose level and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). It was found that the body weight an

Structural characterization of a water-soluble α-D-glucan from Crepis lignea roots and its alleviation of DSS-induced ulcerative colitis in Drosophila melanogaster.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is characterized by recurrent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, and currently available treatment drugs are limited. Plant-derived polysaccharides hold promise for UC prevention. A water-soluble α-D-glucan (CLP80-1) with a molecular weight of 8.17 × 105 Da was isolated and characterized from the roots of traditional Chinese medicinal plant Crepis lignea. Structural analysis revealed that its repeating units comprise →6)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → and →3,6)-α-D-Glcp-(1 → residues as the backbone, with α-D-Glcp-(1 → as side chains substituted at C-3. Elevated CO2, warming and drought differentially impact reproductive and vegetative economic traits in two grassland species.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Since the Industrial Revolution, rising atmospheric CO2, warming and more frequent droughts have significantly impacted ecosystems. While the responses of leaf functional traits to these climate change factors have been widely studied, reproductive traits remain relatively understudied, despite their key role in the diversification and distribution of flowering plants. Here we investigated how elevated CO2, warming, drought and their interactions affect floral, leaf and seed traits in two model grassland species. We also examined how these factors influence trait coordinat
