Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) are treatment modalities that are minimally invasive and used for the prevention and control of dental caries. The amalgamation of these two techniques has led to the development of silver modified atraumatic restorative treatment (SMART). In this approach the carious lesion is restored with glass-ionomer cement (GIC) after SDF application. SMART effectively arrests caries without removing additional tooth structure, making it a promising option for caries management in children who lack cooperative ability. This article r

Dr. Jo E Frencken is a stalwart in preventive dentistry and cariology. He has worked extensively in diagnosing, treating, and assessing outcomes related to dental caries. He developed the concept of a novel technique known as atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) in 1986 for caries management. ART for field settings, where only hand instruments are used for caries removal, is a benchmark discovery made in the field of dentistry. His idea of ART has been adopted by the World Health Organization and has been included as a part of the Basic Package for Oral Care (BPOC) and practiced globally. He

BACKGROUND: Indigenous children in remote Australia face significant disparities in oral health and have limited access to dental care. This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of Atraumatic Restorative Treatment combined with the Hall Technique (ART-HT) compared to usual care.
METHODS: A cost-effectiveness analysis using data from a 1-year ART-HT trial estimated dental caries status and costs from a health-provider perspective. Two scenarios were examined: (1) actual treatment costs and (2) minimum dental services. The incremental cost per decayed, missing, and filled teeth (dmft) prevent

Atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) is a method of managing dental caries based on 2 pillars: sealants for preventing carious lesions in pits and fissures, and restorations for cavitated dentine carious lesions. ART uses only hand instruments for opening/enlarging the cavity and for removing carious tissue. The amount of carious tissue that should be removed depends mainly on the cavity depth. In cavities of shallow and medium depth, carious tissue is removed up to firm dentine. In deep/very deep cavities, in which there is no sign of pulp exposure, pulp inflammation and/or history of spont

Wetting the dentin is critical to atraumatic restorative treatment. The conventional insertion can be challenging when using high-viscosity glass-ionomer cement. This study evaluated the formation of gaps and voids after three insertion methods using micro-CT. Teeth underwent removal of occlusal and proximal caries through the atraumatic restorative treatment technique. Then, they were fixed in an artificial dental arch to simulate the clinical condition and were restored using three insertion methods: conventional, Centrix injection, and double-filling. Previous dentin conditioning procedures
