BACKGROUND: To address poor oral health of residents in long-term care homes (LTCH), this study explored the process of integrating an educational resource and a dental hygienist on the interprofessional care team.
METHODS: This convergent mixed-methods study took place at a 472-bed LTCH in Toronto, Canada from February to August 2018. Nurses employed at the LTCH participated in the study. During the study period, a dental hygienist was integrated into an interprofessional LTCH team. Nurses completed an online eLearning module about using the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT) when referring

This case report describes the implementation approach and evaluation of a medical-dental integration (MDI) project in Colorado that embedded dental hygienists (DHs) into 10 medical practice settings. Through the MDI Learning Collaborative, DHs were integrated into primary care medical care practices to provide full-scope dental hygiene care to patients. Dental hygienists were trained to collect quality-improvement metrics on all encounters, including untreated tooth decay, and referred patients with restorative needs to partnering dentists. Cross-sectional, aggregated clinic-level oral health

BACKGROUND: Many patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) find it difficult to undergo dental care due to challenges caused by their condition, previous temporomandibular joint surgery or invasive dental procedures, and the impact of comorbid conditions. Managing routine dental care for some patients with TMD can be seen as challenging by some dental practitioners.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to work with patients experiencing TMD and clinicians to co-produce recommendations aimed at helping general dentists to provide routine dental care for patients with TMD.

Introduction Limited public understanding of the dental team's roles and confusion about accessing urgent dental care (UDC) and emergency dental services (EDSs) are barriers to efficient service use. Understanding and addressing these gaps is essential to improving patient access, enhancing experience and successfully integrating skill mix into dentistry.Aims This study explores public awareness of the dental team in Wales and the processes for accessing UDC. It also seeks to identify participants' information needs and suggestions for improving awareness and understanding of the general denta

INTRODUCTION: American Indian and Alaska Native children suffer from the poorest oral health of all populational groups in the United States. Evidence-based practices (EBP) for caries control are well established, but systematically implementing such practices have proven difficult. Audit and feedback with goal setting, and action planning to implement these EBPs have not been tested or adapted for Alaska Native healthcare settings. The aim of this study was to investigate acceptability and perceived feasibility of an audit and feedback intervention for pediatric dental caries control among de

BACKGROUND: To improve the oral health of low-income children, innovations in dental delivery systems are needed, including community-based care, the use of expanded duty auxiliary dental personnel, capitation payments, and global budgets. This paper describes the protocol for PREDICT (Population-centered Risk- and Evidence-based Dental Interprofessional Care Team), an evaluation project to test the effectiveness of new delivery and payment systems for improving dental care and oral health.
METHODS/DESIGN: This is a parallel-group cluster randomized controlled trial. Fourteen rural Oregon cou

BACKGROUND: Our facility's dental team consists of a full-time dentists and dental hygienists who work exclusively in the wards to implement best practices in oral healthcare. We executed the dental care system (DCS) that includes lectures and practical training for nurses conducted by dentists and dental hygienists, the introduction to oral assessment, standardization of oral care procedures, a process for nurses to request the dental team, and early bedside oral screening conducted by the dental team. This study investigated the DCS's effects on the incidence of stroke-associated pneumonia (

BACKGROUND: Despite the significant impact of oral problems on the quality of life of palliative care patients, comprehensive studies are lacking. This study is the first of its kind to address this gap by including both a dental examination and an intervention and assessing quality of life using the EORTC QLQ OH 15 questionnaire.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to explore the impact of incorporating dentists into inpatient palliative care, with a focus on enhancing quality of life and alleviating symptom burden.
METHODS: In this monocentric study, data were gathered from a pallia

OBJECTIVE: Comprehensive rehabilitation for multifactorial dental disease requires coordinated planning across restorative/prosthodontic, periodontal, endodontic, and orthodontic disciplines. Existing tooth-level prognostic tools typically focus on single domains and therefore offer limited guidance for interdisciplinary decision-making or for communicating expected effort and cost.
OVERVIEW: This paper proposes the Restorative Value Score (RVS), an objective 0-5 tooth-level index that summarizes, in one number, the amount and complexity of care needed to return a tooth to predictable functio

BACKGROUND: Most cleft teams in The Netherlands have a paediatric dentist as a permanent team member, but differences persist in patients receiving general or specialised dental care in-between team visits. The current study aims to find out if different strategies regarding dental care result in different caries experience and restorative care levels of cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) patients.
METHODS: The cleft team of the Amsterdam University Medical Center, presented as Team Spec, refers all CL/P patients at age one to specialised dental care. The majority of CL/P patients treated in the

Increasing evidence suggests chronic periodontal inflammation may contribute to systemic inflammatory burden, including in medically compromised patients. Studies have demonstrated associations between moderate to advanced periodontitis and numerous chronic medical systemic conditions. As interdisciplinary treatment models become more common, oral health evaluation and periodontal stabilization are emerging as important components of pretreatment medical optimization. This article reviews the relationship between periodontal inflammation and systemic disease, examines current treatment approac

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) can significantly compromise oral health-related quality of life. In younger patients, luxation injuries are associated with a higher risk of pulp necrosis. This case report describes the multidisciplinary management of a 9-year-old patient who presented with a rotated and fractured permanent maxillary right central incisor exhibiting pulp necrosis after dental trauma. An initial attempt at regenerative endodontic treatment was unsuccessful, requiring apexification. Orthodontic treatment was performed to achieve maxillary expansion and rotational alignment of t

People in the criminal justice system, especially those enrolled in drug treatment courts, have complex health profiles, limited access to medical and dental care, and a high prevalence of substance use disorders (SUD). SUD is associated with poor oral health, including severe dental caries and periodontal disease. Both poor oral health and SUD can contribute to low self-esteem and stigma that pose barriers to seeking care. The aim of this study is to examine dental care and oral health disparities among community-dwelling justice-involved people with SUD enrolled in the drug treatment courts.

AIM: The functional and structural complexities accompanying syndromic craniosynostosis make dental care for these patients particularly challenging. We report a case of long-term care for a syndromic craniosynostosis patient. The objective of this report is to introduce special care guidance and clinical recommendation, so that oral health care providers, as key members of a multidisciplinary care team, can provide optimal diagnosis, treatment, and management for the patient with syndromic craniosynostosis.
CASE REPORT: The patient of this case report had a medical history of syndromic crani

BACKGROUND: Hypodontia is a common dental anomaly with complex treatment needs that often require a multidisciplinary approach. Despite its impact on aesthetics, function and psychosocial well-being, there remains a lack of standardised protocols for managing multidisciplinary services for patients with hypodontia.
OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the development and implementation of standardised proforma templates as part of a local standard operating procedure (SOP) for the management of patients with hypodontia at the Royal London Dental Hospital (RLH), with the broader goal of informing w

The mental health and wellbeing of the dental team is of paramount importance in ensuring the delivery of oral healthcare. This perspective emphasises the importance of developing mechanisms of supporting the oral healthcare team. We propose a tripartite approach: a practitioner support network; a mechanism for support of members of the dental team who are referred to the General Dental Council; and crisis support for those facing severe mental health challenges. A practitioner support network would build on the known efficacy of mutual support in addressing the ongoing stress of delivering pa

Tuberculosis (TB) is a preventable and curable infection, but remains a significant cause of death. The dental team is likely to encounter patients with a history of TB, however, at present there is limited guidance available to inform the provision of oral healthcare for this patient group. This may lead to confusion with delays in care. There is a potential health risk posed to patients and co-workers by a member of the dental team who becomes infected. TB has the potential to be a major issue for oral healthcare in the United Kingdom (UK). This paper discusses the implications for both pati

This clinical report describes the interdisciplinary treatment of a patient with hypoplastic amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) and an anterior open occlusal relationship. Prior to referral to the prosthodontics department, she had undergone active orthodontic treatment for 5 years. As she presented with skeletal, functional, and esthetic concerns, orthodontic treatment alone was insufficient to address her complex treatment goals. Given the complexity, optimal comprehensive management necessitated an interdisciplinary approach involving orthodontics, endodontics, periodontal therapy, orthognathic s
