An investigation of potential desensitizing agents in the dentine disc model: a scanning electron microscopy study.

Cervical dentine sensitivity (CDS) may be defined as pain arising from exposed dentine. The prefix cervical indicates the location of the sensitivity and/or its subsequent treatment. Currently the most accepted mechanism of intradental nerve activation associated with dentine sensitivity appears to be hydrodynamic in nature. The concept of tubule occlusion as a method of dentine desensitization is a logical conclusion of the hydrodynamic theory. The authors employed the dentine disc model, qualitative scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray microanalysis to investigate whether selected de

Comparative Study of Technologies for Tubule Occlusion and Treatment of Dentin Hypersensitivity.

This study aimed to evaluate the occluding/remineralization performance and resistance to acid attacks of the mineralization layer formed by a tooth-desensitizing gel containing amorphous calcium magnesium phosphate (ACMP) particles and compare it to six other desensitizing products available on the market. Similar comprehensive studies are few and there is especially a lack of studies that are up to date. A dentin-disc model was used for in vitro evaluation of the desensitizing toothpastes/gels. Application of the products was performed twice daily for seven days. One set of specimens were ev

Current strategies for dentist-applied treatment in the management of hypersensitive dentine.

Few of the many dentist-applied treatments for dentine hypersensitivity meet the requirements of an ideal desensitizing agent'. This paper, although not exhaustive, covers methods that may be classified from simplest to most complex. Topical methods are simple, but they are often uncomfortable and the effects usually quite short-lasting, and many fall short of the 'ideal'. Fluorides and oxalates appear to be the best topical methods. Iontophoresis of fluoride represents an intermediate stage of complexity and it meets most of the criteria of an ideal desensitizing agent. Newer restorative mate
