The aim of this study was to investigate the response of human pulp tissue to a dentin bonding agent, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose Plus (SMPP), in exposed class V cavities. Sixteen human premolar teeth were mechanically exposed. Ten pulps were capped with SMPP and six teeth were capped with Dycal. The cavities were filled with a composite. After 40 days, the teeth were extracted and processed for histologic evaluation. Of the 10 teeth capped with SMPP, eight showed moderate chronic inflammation, one was severely inflamed, and one pulp had no to slight inflammation. None of the teeth capped with SM

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) cause degradation of the dentinal matrix, as they act actively on collagen fibrils, leading to their deterioration and collapse. MMP inhibitors are known to be used for the pre-treatment of human dentin before bonding. Most studies on the MMP inhibitors examined the effect of MMP inhibitors on bonding to sound dentin (SD), but few examine their effect on bonding to caries affected dentin (CAD). This systematic review aims to identify and summarize studies that have applied MMP inhibitors for pre-treatment of CAD, and examine the microtensil

OBJECTIVES: Histological investigations have demonstrated that dentin bonding agents can induce pulpal inflammation. However, there is little information on the precise mechanisms about dentin bonding agent-induced pulpal inflammation. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is an inducible enzyme believed to be responsible for prostaglandin synthesis at the site of inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dentin bonding agents on the expression of COX-2 in human pulp cells.
STUDY DESIGN: Human pulp cells were cultured from extracted impacted third molars using an explant techni

BACKGROUND: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is one of the most challenging and persistent dental complaints characterized by transient, intense pain triggered by various stimuli. It affects a significant portion of the global population, predominantly those aged 20-40. This study aims to evaluate the desensitizing efficacy of seventh-generation dentin bonding agents (Single Bond Universal by 3 M ESPE and Xeno-V + by Dentsply) against a control group using Bifluorid 12 by Voco in mitigating DH within a month of the follow-up period.
METHODS: This was a single-center, parallel-group, double-blind,

The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare marginal leakage of Class II amalgam restorations lined with different agents (two new generation dentin bonding systems, a cavity varnish and an amalgam liner). Forty freshly extracted human molar teeth were divided into five groups. Class II preparations were prepared in the mesial and distal surfaces of each molar. While the cavities in two groups were lined with two new generation bonding systems, the other two groups were treated with an amalgam lining material and a cavity varnish. Fifth group was used as control, without any lining. Amal

OBJECTIVES: The bonding of resin to dentine is dependent largely on surface modifications. The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that a role of the metal chlorides used as primers is to initiate polymerization of resin at the resin-dentine interface, thereby affecting bond strength.
METHODS: Nine primers were evaluated, comprising aqueous 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) solutions containing AICl3, CeCl3, CoCl2, CuCl2, FeCl3, NiCl2, MgCl2, SnCl2 or ZnCl2, respectively. One of the two luting agents (Super-Bond resin) consisted of methyl methacrylate (MMA), 4-methacryloy

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) dentin conditioners are considered a useful step in the restorative process, as they increase the bond strength of GIC to dentin. Delivering antimicrobial agents through the dentin conditioner may minimize the impact on the physical properties of GIC. It is not known whether such antibacterial conditioning agents may affect the bond strength of GIC to dentin.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of various dentin conditioners with and without antimicrobial agent on the shear bond strength (SBS) of GIC to dentin.

The pulpal reaction associated with a composite resin alone and composite resin used in conjunction with two dentine bonding agents was studied. Class V cavities were prepared on the labial surfaces of the canine teeth of 18 male ferrets. After acid etching of the enamel margins, the cavities were restored with either a composite resin alone or in combination with one of two dentine bonding agents, Scotchbond and Gluma. One cavity in each animal was filled with Kalzinol as a control. The animals were killed after 7, 14 and 28 days. After histological processing, the pulpal changes were assesse

INTRODUCTION: Secondary caries remains a leading cause of restoration failure, often resulting from residual bacteria persisting in demineralized dentin after minimally invasive cavity preparation. The incorporation of inherent antibacterial properties into universal bonding agents might offer a promising strategy to reduce this risk without additional disinfection steps. The aim of this in vitro study was to comparatively evaluate the antibacterial activity of three universal bonding agents against Streptococcus mutans using demineralized human dentin blocks as a simulated carious dentin mode

BACKGROUND: Following selective caries removal, the efficacy of bonding to the dentin substrate is questionable due to alterations in mineral content and the quality of remaining dentin, especially in deep proximal cavities.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength of resin composite to artificially demineralized dentin and sound dentin compared to demineralized dentin that underwent different remineralization protocols. Additionally, the study sought to evaluate the effect of the 2 bonding modes (total-etch/self-etch) on the applied remineralizing agent

This study investigated the influence of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) agents and repeated saliva contamination on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of two self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs) bonded to dentin. Forty-eight sound human teeth were randomly divided into eight experimental groups, based on three factors: the type of SARC, the presence or absence of an MDP agent, and the presence or absence of multiple saliva exposures. The control group for each SARC received neither MDP agent nor multiple saliva contaminations. For each group, five teeth were sectioned to

Resin-bonded restorations are the most important caries treatment method in clinical practice. Thus, improving the durability of dentin bonding remains a pressing issue. As a promising solution, guided tissue remineralization can induce the formation of apatite nanocrystals to repair defects in the dentin bonding interface. In this study, we present an experimental 20 wt % citric acid (CA) dental etching agent that removes the smear layer. After CA-etching, approximately 3.55 wt % residual CA formed a strong bond with collagen fibrils, reducing the interfacial energy between the remineralizing

INTRODUCTION: The degree of conversion of dentin bonding agents contributes to the success of final restorations in adhesive dentistry. It is clinically relevant, as it is directly related to the overall bond strength that maintains these restorations in place and prevents marginal deterioration. However, Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) present within the dentin substrate have been known to have a deleterious effect on the bond stability, due to their collagenolytic activity. Inhibition of the effects of MMPs has been studied, and the use of a pre-treatment protocol that includes MMP inhibiti
