LGBTQIA+ Competence: A Pedagogical Paradigm Shift in Graduate Nursing Education.

BACKGROUND: The omission of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) content in graduate nursing education leaves people who identify as sexually or gender diverse (SGD) with poorer health across the life span and a 12-year shorter life expectancy relative to heteronormative counterparts. METHOD: An educational intervention was paired with an optional academic-community-based clinical immersion in LGBTQIA+ health with the goal of improving health equity for people who identify as SGD. Masters of Nursing students (N = 11) from adult specialties participated in a

Content Validation of a Political Competence Scale in Graduate Nursing Education.

AIM: To examine the content validity of an adapted Political Competence Scale for Nurses (PCS-N) for use in graduate nursing education. BACKGROUND: Instruments to evaluate political competence as a graduate-level educational outcome remain limited. METHOD: Experts rated item relevance using a four-point scale (1 = not relevant to 4 = highly relevant). Scale-level indices were calculated using the average method (S-CVI/Ave). RESULTS: All subscales demonstrated strong content validity, with S-CVI/Ave values ranging from 0.89 to 0.95. Mean item-level content validity index values were 0.89 for

Making a case for systematic integration of theory-based tobacco education into graduate psychiatric/mental health nursing curriculum.

Tobacco use and dependence is a serious public health issue that disproportionately affects the mentally ill client population. Mental health professionals, including psychiatric/mental health advanced practice nurses (PMHAPNs), are disinclined to integrate tobacco cessation interventions into their practice, due in part, to a general lack of tobacco-related knowledge (C. Essenmacher, C. Karvonen-Gutierrez, J. Lynch-Sauer, & S. A., Duffy, 2008; A. J. Molina, T. Fernandez, D. Fernandez, M. Delgado, S. de Abajo, & V. Martin, 2012; L. Sarna, L. L. Danao, S. Chan, S. Can AI Write MCQs? A Comparison of ChatGPT-Generated and Educator-Authored Multiple-Choice Questions in Graduate Nursing Education.

Background/Objectives: High-quality multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are essential for valid assessment in graduate-level nursing programs, yet developing such items is resource-intensive for educators. Large language models such as ChatGPT may generate educational assessment content; however, evidence regarding their effectiveness in producing graduate-level nursing examination items remains limited. This study compared the perceived quality of ChatGPT-generated and educator-authored MCQs for graduate-level nursing examinations and examined exploratory associations between assessor characteri

When education turns critical: A rapid review of undergraduate and graduate nursing students' experiences and needs with critical events.

BACKGROUND: Many nursing students experience critical events during clinical education. As students are rarely prepared for such events, they can perceive them as traumatic, doubt their competence, or even drop out of education. Little is known about which events are perceived as critical by nursing students, how they affect them, and what support is required. AIM: This rapid review examines, summarises, and critically evaluates the available evidence on critical events in nursing students. METHODS: The researchers conducted a rapid review following the steps from the Cochrane Rapid Reviews

From aspiration to achievements: Exploring the motivational drives behind female graduate nursing students' pursuit of higher education in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: The nursing and midwifery professions are predominantly female. In Sub-saharan Africa, especially in Ghana, females have traditionally been perceived as homemakers who do not require higher education to play their roles. This phenomenon perpetuates gender inequality, underutilises talents, and denies women opportunities for personal and professional growth. AIM: This study explored the motivational factors influencing the uptake of higher nurse education among female nurses in a resource-constrained setting. METHODS: An exploratory, descriptive qualitative approach was adopted wi

Are pediatric practicum experiences a beneficial component of registered nurse education programs? Nursing students and new graduates weigh in: A qualitative descriptive research study.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives requires baccalaureate registered nurse education programs to deliver a generalist curriculum meeting entry-level competencies. To fulfill this requirement, nursing programs ensure the provision of practice opportunities for hands-on experience with patients of all ages through practicum. Current literature suggests the limited availability of clinical placement opportunities in pediatric settings. This may reduce the opportunity for nursing students to become acquainted with the unique needs of infants, children, and a

Recommendations from recent graduates in medicine, nursing and pharmacy on improving interprofessional education in university programs: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) has been recognized as an innovative approach for the development of a collaborative, practice-ready health workforce, but is not used consistently in undergraduate health professional programs. We sought to explore the reflections of graduates on the IPE experiences they had during their undergraduate education and training. It was anticipated that having completed their pre-vocational education and spent up to two years working in a clinical environment, recent graduates would be well-placed to provide insights into the value of the IPE opportuni

An integrative review of rural and remote nursing graduate programmes and experiences of nursing graduates.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine international studies that specifically focus on transition to practice for graduate registered nurses in rural and remote areas. BACKGROUND: Supportive graduate nursing programmes are essential for enabling nursing graduates' transition to practice and reducing attrition rates. Literature examining support measures for nursing graduates within metropolitan areas is abundant. However, there is a paucity of evidence on effective graduate programmes for rural and remote-based nursing graduates. DESIGN: A systematic approach was used to identify robust research w

Electronic health record competency in graduate nurses: A grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: The use of electronic health records is ubiquitous in healthcare settings, yet newly graduated nurses struggle with developing electronic health record competency prior to entry into nursing practice. Insufficient electronic health record knowledge, skills, and attitudes among newly graduated nurses are contributing to patient harm, clinical burn-out, and unsafe practices. In this study, we interviewed electronic health record educators to identify how newly graduated nurses develop electronic health record competency characteristics and to learn about their educational approaches
