Evaluation of electrochemical oxidation techniques for degradation of dye effluents--a comparative approach.

The high energy cost of an electrochemical method is the fatal drawback that hinders its large scale application in wastewater treatment. The traditional single-chamber electrochemical method used in the waste water treatment mainly focused on anodic oxidation, but hydrogen produced on the cathode and indirect electrochemical treatment involves application of an electrical current to the wastewater containing chloride to convert into chlorine/hypochlorite. The two-compartment electrolytic cell, separated by an anion exchange membrane, has been developed in this work. In the new reactor, indire

Incorporating CRISPR Techniques with Electrochemical Sensors: From Signal-Off to Signal-On Assays.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting ∼10% to 15% of reproductive-aged women worldwide. Diagnosis requires two of the following: hyperandrogenism, oligo-ovulation or anovulation, and polycystic ovaries. In addition to reproductive dysfunction, many women with PCOS display metabolic abnormalities associated with hyperandrogenism. Recent studies have reported that the gut microbiome is altered in women with PCOS and rodent models of the disorder. However, it is unknown whether the gut microbiome plays a causal role in the development and pathology of PCOS. Giv

Investigation of sulfonamides inhibition of carbonic anhydrase enzyme using multiphotometric and electrochemical techniques.

Two approaches for sulfonamides (SA's) determination, based on carbonic anhydrase enzyme inhibition have been investigated in this work. In the first method, nine different SA's have been screened using simultaneous multiphotometric measurement in multiwell plates. The sulfanilamide (SAD) showed significant inhibition compared to other sulfonamides. The carbonic anhydrase (CA) kinetic interactions reveal noncompetitive binding of SAD. Interferences from other inhibitors with enzyme were studied and the results showed very good selectivity toward SAD. In the second approach, an electrochemical

Toward the Detection and Identification of Single Bacteria by Electrochemical Collision Technique.

Fast and cost-efficient detection and identification of bacteria in food and water samples and biological fluids is an important challenge in bioanalytical chemistry. It was shown recently that bacteria can be detected by measuring the decrease in the diffusion current to the ultramicroelectrode caused by cell collisions with its surface. To add selectivity to the bacteria detection, herein we show the possibility of collision experiments with the signal produced by electrochemical activity of bacterial cells reducing (or oxidizing) redox species. The mediator oxidation/reduction rate can be u

Deepening the Understanding of Carbon Active Sites for ORR Using Electrochemical and Spectrochemical Techniques.

Defect-containing carbon nanotube materials were prepared by subjecting two commercial multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) of different purities to purification (HCl) and oxidative conditions (HNO3) and further heat treatment to remove surface oxygen groups. The as-prepared carbon materials were physicochemically characterized to observe changes in their properties after the different treatments. TEM microscopy shows morphological modifications in the MWCNTs after the treatments such as broken walls and carbon defects including topological defects. This leads to both higher surface areas and

A Redox-Active Copper Complex for Orthogonal Detection of Homocysteine Involving Fluorescence and Electrochemical Techniques.

The present work reports the synthesis, characterization, and excited state photo-physical studies of two copper(II) compounds, 1 & 2, which show interference-free emission with homocysteine (Hcy). Cu(II) complexes offer an orthogonal detection strategy involving fluorescence and electrochemical methods, paving the way for improved point-of-care diagnostics and early cardiovascular diseases intervention. The reduction-induced emission enhancement (RIEE) of Cu complexes facilitates the fluorescence measurement of Hcy at physiological pH. The fluorogenic redox-active 1 and 2 are deposited onto g

Shining a light on viral detection: a comparative study of electrochemical and electrochemiluminescence techniques for human cytomegalovirus.

Human cytomegalovirus (hCMV) is a widespread herpesvirus proposed to exert oncomodulatory effects on several cancers by influencing cell proliferation, inflammation, and immune evasion. hCMV DNA and proteins have been detected in tumors, such as glioblastoma and colorectal cancer, suggesting a possible role in tumor biology. However, detection rates in clinical samples vary dramatically from 0 to 100%, reflecting both biological heterogeneity and methodological differences. Standard detection methods such as immunohistochemistry, qPCR, and sequencing provide good sensitivity, but each has limi

Biosensor Based on Electrochemical Analysis for Staphylococcus aureus Detection with Molecular Imprinted Polymer Technique.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is one of the most common hospital-acquired pathogens and poses a serious threat to patients with weakened immune systems. Transmission can occur through foodborne illness, skin infections, abscess formation, and bloodstream invasion. The most severe complication arises when S. aureus infects the heart, leading to valve damage and potentially progressing to heart failure. In addition, many strains have developed strong resistance to conventional antibiotic therapies, making treatment increasingly difficult. These challenges highlight the importance of early de

Operando characterization technique innovations in single-atom catalyst-derived electrochemical CO2 conversion.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are the perfect epitome of cutting-edge innovation in catalysis, offering distinct active sites in the form of isolated, individual atoms. SACs amalgamate the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, in turn enhancing the activity, selectivity, and stability during catalytic processes. The latest progressions in in situ/operando characterization techniques have simplified the understanding of the catalyst heterogeneity and structure sensitivity of SACs by enabling the real-time observation of SACs under a coexistent working environment to provide insi

Electrochemical biosensor constructed using dual-signal amplification techniques (PER-HCR) for the ultrasensitive trace detection of ctDNA BRAF mutation.

The detection of BRAF mutations in circulating tumor DNA is beneficial for early diagnosis and personalized therapeutic approaches of melanoma. However, the sensitive and reliable trace detection of BRAF mutations remains a major challenge. Therefore, in this study, the combination of two isothermal signal amplification techniques (primer exchange reaction (PER) and hybridization chain reaction (HCR)) was proposed to construct an electrochemical biosensor for the efficient and sensitive detection of BRAF mutations. The presence of target triggered PER and HCR sequentially to achieve dual-casca
