Response monitoring without sensory feedback.

OBJECTIVE: The elicitation of an evoked potential, the 'error negativity' (Ne) when subjects commit errors in speeded tasks, is often taken as an index of response monitoring processes. The presence of a Ne-like wave on purely correct trials challenges the current conceptions about the nature of such a monitoring system. Here, we evaluate the possibility that the Ne-like wave on correct trials is merely due to reafferences, and at the same time, we test directly the general opinion according to which the Ne is generated by an internal signal. METHODS: We studied the presence of a Ne-like wave

Sensory feedback - Dependent neural de-orchestration: The effect of altered sensory feedback on Musician's Dystonia.

PURPOSE: Musician's dystonia (MD) is a task-specific movement disorder related to extensive expert music performance training. Similar to other forms of focal dystonia, MD involves sensory deficits and abnormal patterns of sensorimotor integration. The present study investigated the impaired cortical sensorimotor network of pianists who suffer from MD by employing altered auditory and tactile feedback during scale playing with multichannel EEG. METHODS: 9 healthy professional pianists and 9 professional pianists suffering from right hand MD participated in an experiment that required repeated

Increased sensory feedback in Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuro-psychiatric disorder being characterized by motor and phonic tics typically preceded by sensory urges. Given the latter the role of the sensory system and sensorimotor interaction in TS has recently gained increased attention. 12 TS patients and 12 matched control subjects performed two tasks, requiring simple finger movements: a Go/NoGo task and a self paced movement task. Neurophysiological data was recorded using magnetoencephalography (MEG). Event related responses around movement onset, i.e. motor field (MF) occurring directly prior to the movement and mo

Sensory feedback for limb prostheses in amputees.

Commercial prosthetic devices currently do not provide natural sensory information on the interaction with objects or movements. The subsequent disadvantages include unphysiological walking with a prosthetic leg and difficulty in controlling the force exerted with a prosthetic hand, thus creating health issues. Restoring natural sensory feedback from the prosthesis to amputees is an unmet clinical need. An optimal device should be able to elicit natural sensations of touch or proprioception, by delivering the complex signals to the nervous system that would be produced by skin, muscles and joi

Afferent sensory feedback for lower extremity prosthesis.

Electrical stimulation has been applied to sciatic nerves of patients to achieve sensory feedback after lower limb amputation for periods of up to six years. Patients used the sensory feedback device daily. Pain, infection and electrode displacement have not been problems. The immediate postoperative benefits are that pain is minimized after amputation and stump healing is improved. Furthermore, the stimulus affords the patient increased confidence when walking due to renewed awareness of the center of gravity. Improved ability to function in the dark and when walking up and down stairways mak

Sensory feedback add-on for upper-limb prostheses.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Sensory feedback systems have been of great interest in upper-limb prosthetics. Despite tremendous research, there are no commercial modality-matched feedback systems. This article aims to introduce the first detachable and feedback add-on option that can be attached to in-use prostheses. TECHNIQUE: A sensory feedback system was tested on a below-elbow myoelectric prosthesis. The aim was to have the amputee grasp fragile objects without crushing while other accidental feedback sources were blocked. DISCUSSION: A total of 8 successful trials (out of 10) showed that sensory

Brown adipose tissue has sympathetic-sensory feedback circuits.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is an important source of thermogenesis which is nearly exclusively dependent on its sympathetic nervous system (SNS) innervation. We previously demonstrated the SNS outflow from brain to BAT using the retrograde SNS-specific transneuronal viral tract tracer, pseudorabies virus (PRV152) and demonstrated the sensory system (SS) inflow from BAT to brain using the anterograde SS-specific transneuronal viral tract tracer, H129 strain of herpes simplex virus-1. Several brain areas were part of both the SNS outflow to, and receive SS inflow from, interscapular BAT (IBAT) i

Sensory feedback dependence hypothesis in persons who stutter.

The present study investigated the role of sensory feedback (auditory, proprioception, and tactile) at the intra- and inter-gestural levels of speech motor coordination in normal and fast speech rate conditions in two groups: (1) persons who stutter (PWS) and (2) those who do not (PNS). Feedback perturbations were carried out with the use of masking noise (auditory), tendon vibration (proprioception), and nonwords that differed in the amount of required tactile lip contact (/api/+tactile and /awi/-tactile). Comparisons were also made between jaw-free and jaw-immobilized (with a bite-block) tas

Sensory feedback in artificial control of human mobility.

Artificial motor control systems may reduce the handicap of motor impaired individuals. Sensors are essential components in feedback control of these systems and in the information exchange with the user. The objective of this paper is to give an overview of the applications of sensors in the artificial control of human mobility. These applications may either require an accurate estimate of the measured physical quantities or can be based on learning the relation between sensory information and control actions by example. Actual use of sensors in artificial motor control systems requires that

Immediate thalamic sensory plasticity depends on corticothalamic feedback.

Multiple neuron ensemble recordings were obtained simultaneously from both the primary somatosensory (SI) cortex and the ventroposterior medial thalamus (VPM) before and during the combined administration of reversible inactivation of the SI cortex and a reversible subcutaneous block of peripheral trigeminal nerve fibers. This procedure was performed to quantify the contribution of descending corticofugal projections on (i) the normal organization of thalamic somatosensory receptive fields and (ii) the thalamic somatosensory plastic reorganization that immediately follows a peripheral deaffere

Episodic breathing in alligators: role of sensory feedback.

The episodic breathing pattern in many reptiles consists of two or more clustered breaths separated by variable non-ventilatory periods. This pattern is commonly postulated to result from oscillations in lung and/or blood PO2 or PCO2 via chemoreceptor feedback. We tested this hypothesis by monitoring breathing pattern in: (1) awake, undisturbed alligators and (2) sedated alligators (approx. 25 mg/kg pentobarbital, i.p.; 3 days prior to data collection). In sedated alligators, measurements were made: (1) before and after bilateral cervical vagotomy, a procedure that removes peripheral arterial

Modifications of ongoing tremors and locomotion by sensory feedback.

In principle tremors can be produced by (1) mechanical oscillators (combination of masses and springs), (2) reflex oscillators arising from sensory feedback pathways, or (3) central oscillators generated by single "pacemaker" neurones or interconnected networks. Recent studies supporting each of these mechanisms under certain conditions are discussed. Differences between these mechanisms are clarified by recent studies in Edmonton on the premammillary cat. This preparation shows a prominent reflexly-induced tremor which can be modified by mechanical loading and electrical stimulation. It also

Muscle spindles provide flexible sensory feedback for movement sequences.

Sensory feedback is essential for motor performance and must adapt to task demands. Muscle spindle afferents (MSAs) are a major primary source of feedback about movement. Their responses are readily modulated online by fusimotor neurons and, in the unique case of jaw MSAs whose cell bodies lie within the central nervous system, by central synaptic inputs. They are, therefore, a powerful site for implementing flexible sensorimotor control. We record from MSAs innervating the jaw musculature of mice performing a directed lick sequence task. Jaw MSAs encode complex jaw-tongue kinematics. However,

Sensitivity to temporal parameters of intraneural tactile sensory feedback.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that neural stimulation can be used to provide artificial sensory feedback to amputees eliciting sensations referred on the amputated hand. The temporal properties of the neural stimulation modulate aspects of evoked sensations that can be exploited in a bidirectional hand prosthesis. METHODS: We previously collected evidence that the derivative of the amplitude of the stimulation (intra-digit temporal dynamics) allows subjects to recognize object compliance and that the time delay among stimuli injected through electrodes implanted in different nerves (i

A sensory-motor hand prosthesis with integrated thermal feedback.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we reported the presence of phantom thermal sensations in amputees: thermal stimulation of specific spots on the residual arm elicited thermal sensations in their missing hands. Here, we exploit phantom thermal sensations via a standalone system integrated into a robotic prosthetic hand to provide real-time and natural temperature feedback. METHODS: The subject (a male adult with unilateral transradial amputation) used the sensorized prosthesis to manipulate objects and distinguish their thermal properties. We tested his ability to discriminate between (1) hot, cold, and

Sensory weighting of position and force feedback during pinching.

Human hands are complex biomechanical systems that allow for dexterous tasks with many degrees of freedom. Coordination of the fingers is essential for many activities of daily living and involves integrating sensory signals. During this sensory integration, the central nervous system deals with the uncertainty of sensory signals. When handling compliant objects, force and position are related. Interactions with stiff objects result in reduced position changes and increased force changes compared to compliant objects. Literature has shown sensory integration of force and position at the should

Sensory integration and neuromodulatory feedback facilitate Drosophila mechanonociceptive behavior.

Nociception is an evolutionarily conserved mechanism to encode and process harmful environmental stimuli. Like most animals, Drosophila melanogaster larvae respond to a variety of nociceptive stimuli, including noxious touch and temperature, with stereotyped escape responses through activation of multimodal nociceptors. How behavioral responses to these different modalities are processed and integrated by the downstream network remains poorly understood. By combining trans-synaptic labeling, ultrastructural analysis, calcium imaging, optogenetics and behavioral analyses, we uncovered a circuit

Effects of sensory feedback on simulated online slot machine gambling.

OBJECTIVE: A prominent feature of land-based and online slot machines is audiovisual feedback that accompanies winning outcomes. Prior laboratory work suggests that this design feature may influence game experience, facilitate immersion, increase arousal, and promote riskier decision making, but whether this generalizes to realistic gambling products remains unclear. In this preregistered study, we used a realistic slot machine simulator, deployed online, to evaluate effects of win-accompanying sensory feedback (SF) on gambling experience and behavior. METHOD: Participants were recruited via
