Fetal growth retardation after gastric banding.

A 35-year-old woman became pregnant 15 months after gastric banding, during which time she lost 55 kg in weight. During the third trimester, severe vomiting was noted and she lost a further 6 kg. Ultrasound examination showed oligohydramnions and fetal growth retardation of 38%. Enteral nutrition was given until delivery and ultrasound verified normalization of the oligohydramnions and weight gain for the fetus. The woman was delivered by cesarean section of a female infant with birthweight 2,470 g. It is concluded that special care must be taken with regard to the nutritional status of pregna

Fetal growth retardation and pre-eclampsia.

In a series of 2434 patients with pre-eclampsia, the prevalence of fetal growth retardation was 8.7 per cent compared with 8.6 per cent in the total hospital population. The prevalence was increased in early-onset pre-eclampsia (18.2 per cent) (P less than 0.001) and reduced in late-onset pre-eclampsia (5.6 per cent) (P less than 0.001). In patients who later developed early-onset pre-eclampsia with fetal growth retardation, the prevalence of subnormal oestriol excretion was significantly increased (79.5 per cent) (P less than 0.001) as was the prevalence of hypoglycaemia (33.3 per cent) (P le

Antenatal pregnancy complications and fetal growth retardation.

This study reports the associations between antenatal complications, subnormal urinary oestriol excretion and perinatal death in 500 pregnancies when the baby weighed less than the 10th centile for gestational age at birth, compared with those in a series of 500 pregnancies when the baby was of a normal weight for gestation. The overall incidence of antenatal complications was not higher in those pregnancies in which the fetus was growth retarded, although early onset pre-eclampsia, threatened abortion, diabetes mellitus and accidental haemorrhage were commoner (P less than 0.05). The incidenc

Fetal growth retardation: associated malformations and chromosomal abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine the incidence and pattern of chromosomal abnormalities in fetal growth retardation. STUDY DESIGN: Blood karyotyping was performed in 458 fetuses referred to us for further assessment of growth retardation at 17 to 39 weeks' gestation. RESULTS: The fetal karyotype was normal in 369 and abnormal in 89 (19%) of the cases. The most common chromosomal defect in the group referred at < 26 weeks' gestation was triploidy; in those referred at > or = 26 weeks, it was trisomy 18. The incidence of fetal autosomal chromosome aberrations increased, whereas the in

Fetal renal failure associated with intrauterine growth retardation.

Four preterm infants with severe intrauterine growth retardation had renal failure from birth. The amount of asphyxia associated with the birth process did not fully explain the renal failure. Before delivery all for fetuses had severe oligohydramnios and an empty urinary bladder. These observations strengthen the view that severe intrauterine growth retardation may be accompanied by oligohydramnios caused by fetal renal failure.

Dihydroergotamine causes fetal growth retardation in guinea pigs.

Dihydroergotamine is a vasoactive drug which enhances venous tone, central blood volume and cardiac output but has variable effects on arterial tone. Its effect on the uterine arterial circulation is unstudied and yet dihydroergotamine is widely used to treat postural hypotension in pregnant and nonpregnant women. For this reason we undertook studies to determine if its chronic use had any adverse effect on the placental arterial circulation and fetal growth in an animal model. We administered dihydroergotamine (14 micrograms/kg/day) to pregnant guinea pigs with 2-4 fetuses from day 30-60 of p

[Fetal growth retardation: physiopathology. Review of the literature].

Fetal hypotrophy or intrauterine growth retardation is an important cause of fetal and neonatal mortality and a real cause of iatrogenic prematurity. When pregnancy is progressing normally there are histological changes in the spiral arteries with an equilibrium between the endothelial prostacyclin and platelet thromboxane on the one part and peroxides and Vitamin E on the other part. This allows uteroplacental circulation to flow rapidly and at a low pressure. Furthermore immunological tolerance of the mother's system in the relationship to her embryo plays a part in bringing about this speci

Growth retardation in fetal alcohol syndrome. Unresponsiveness to growth-promoting hormones.

The relationships between growth retardation and metabolic and hormonal parameters were studied in 7 children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Fasting blood concentrations of TSH, T4, T3, FSH and LH were normal. Plasma prolactin concentrations after chlorpromazine stimulation were normal. 3 children had abnormal oral glucose tolerance tests with increased plasma insulin response. Peak plasma growth hormone responses to insulin-induced hypoglycemia were elevated in 5 patients. Fasting bioassayable serum somatomedin activity, determined in 6 patients, was elevated in 3 patients and normal in 3

Current growth standards, definitions, diagnosis and classification of fetal growth retardation.

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) implies that intrauterine growth has been inhibited and that the fetus has not attained its growth potential. IUGR is a clinical term, and the diagnosis is usually based on small size for gestational age at birth (SGA). However, IUGR is not equal to SGA. Women seem to be programmed for having births of a certain size; some SGA babies are not IUGR, and some larger babies are still IUGR. A large number of growth charts, based on populations with different inclusion criteria and constructed according to different methods, have been developed and used; this c

Causes and consequences of fetal growth retardation in pigs.

In pigs, as in other species, fetal growth retardation is associated with reduced birth weight and increased risk of fetal and neonatal death. As there are few opportunities after birth to remedy the detrimental effects of low birth weight, it is important to understand both the intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with inadequate fetal growth and to determine when growth retarded fetuses deviate from the growth trajectory of their normal sized littermates. Inadequately grown pig fetuses can be identified statistically as early as day 30 of the 114 days of gestation, indicating that limi

The prediction of fetal growth retardation in twin pregnancy.

A total of 132 twin pregnancies first seen at less than 36 weeks gestation were studied prospectively to determine the epidemiological and anthropomorphic factors associated with single or dual fetal growth retardation; the clinical, biochemical and ultrasound serial measurements that are predictive of single or dual fetal growth retardation, and to design scoring systems for the prediction of fetal growth retardation. A number of factors were associated with an increased risk of fetal growth retardation, but the highest risk was present when there was an abnormality in both plasma oestriol an

Contribution of twin pregnancy to perinatal mortality and fetal growth retardation; reversal of growth retardation after birth.

A survey of factors associated with perinatal mortality in 511 twins and fetal growth retardation and its reversal in 262 twins is presented. The incidence of stillbirth was almost 50% higher in twins than in singletons and the neonatal mortality was six times as high. Eighty percent of the neonatal deaths occurred in infants born prior to or at 30 weeks of gestation; 93% of the deaths were in infants weighing less than 1500 g and 75% occurred within 48 hours of birth. Fetal malnutrition was the main cause of stillbirth, and respiratory distress syndrome and asphyxia neonatorum were the main c

Fetal kidney volume and urine production in cases of fetal growth retardation.

The amount of amniotic fluid has a close correlation to the function of the fetal renal system. In many cases of fetal growth retardation oligohydramnios is obvious. The aim of this study is the investigation of the hourly fetal urine production rate (HFUPR) and the growth of fetal kidneys during pregnancy in cases of fetal growth retardation and to evaluate the renal participation in the origin of oligohydramnios in cases of growth retardation. In 52 healthy pregnancies and 27 cases with known fetal growth retardation, the volume of the fetal kidneys was measured sonographically and the hourl

Early fetal growth retardation: obstetric background and recurrence rate.

The obstetric background of early fetal growth retardation, leading to intrauterine death between 25 and 34 weeks or to delivery before 34 weeks' gestation, was investigated in a group of 100 women. Hypertensive disorders were the most common causative factor (59%). Other causes included antepartum hemorrhage and congenital anomalies. In 20% of the cases no obvious explanation for the fetal growth retardation could be found. The recurrence rate of fetal growth retardation in 49 women who had a subsequent pregnancy was found to be nearly 50%. In one-third the severity of growth compromise was c

Does fetal gut obstruction cause hydramnios and growth retardation?

In order to study the effects of impaired fetal intestinal absorption of amniotic fluid, two series of neonates (551 from Liverpool and 172 from Rome) with different types of congenital gut obstruction were divided into two groups and compared. Group A consisted of patients with complete obstruction at or above the proximal jejunum (within 15 cm of the ligament of Treitz). Patients of group B had either incomplete obstruction at group A level or either incomplete or complete obstruction at a lower level. Maternal hydramnios and fetal growth retardation rates were found to be significantly high

Effects of intrauterine nutritional supplementation on fetal growth retardation.

The effects of fetal nutritional supplementation on experimentally induced growth retardation were investigated in third-trimester sheep. The control group, C, was fed ad libitum (n = 8). Group R received a protein- and calorie-restricted diet over the last 3 weeks of gestation (n = 8). Group RS was given the same restricted diet as group R, and fetal, intragastric supplements of amino acids and glucose (n = 7). Over the experimental period, maternal weight increased 4.1 +/- 0.6 kg in C but was stable in R and RS (p less than 0.01). R and RS ewes and fetuses showed biochemical evidence of maln
