Measurement of Physical Activity Using Fitness Trackers Before and After Midurethral Sling.

IMPORTANCE: Urinary incontinence can be a barrier to performing physical activities for many women. A midurethral sling (MUS) has shown symptom improvement for women experiencing stress urinary incontinence (SUI), suggesting the hypothesis that physical activity rates should increase after treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the change in objectively measured physical activity levels in women following placement of MUS for SUI. STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective cohort study, patients undergoing MUS placement, with or without concomitant pelvic reconstructive surgery,

Association between the use of fitness trackers, perfectionism, motivation and anxiety in athletes.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, the use of fitness trackers in sports practice has increased. However, despite their growing popularity, there is little empirical evidence regarding their psychological impact on non-professional athletes, particularly in relation to variables such as motivation, anxiety, and perfectionism. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore possible differences and associations in these psychological variables based on the use of fitness trackers. METHODS: A total of 120 athletes participated and completed three questionnaires: the Sport-MPS-2, the SMS, and the SA

Postoperative use of fitness trackers for continuous monitoring of vital signs: a survey of hospitalized patients.

Wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are increasingly incorporated into healthcare, including perioperative settings. These devices offer continuous non-invasive monitoring of vital signs, patient position, and mobilization. Nonetheless, there is currently little information about tolerance and acceptance of wearables in postoperative patients. We therefore assessed opinions and user experience in postoperative patients who used three popular fitness trackers during their entire hospital stay. Specifically, we evaluate the Apple Watch 7, Garmin Fenix 6 Pro, and Withings ScanWatc

Assessment of heart rate measurements by commercial wearable fitness trackers for early identification of metabolic syndrome risk.

Metabolic syndrome increases the risks of cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. The early detection of metabolic syndrome is clinically relevant, as it enables timely and targeted interventions. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome and heart rate measured using wearable devices in a real-world setting and compare this association with that for clinical resting heart rate. Data from 564 middle-aged adults who wore wearable devices for at least 7 days with a minimum daily wear time of 20 h were analyzed. The results sho

Feasibility characteristics of wrist-worn fitness trackers in health status monitoring for post-COVID patients in remote and rural areas.

INTRODUCTION: Common, consumer-grade biosensors mounted on fitness trackers and smartwatches can measure an array of biometrics that have potential utility in post-discharge medical monitoring, especially in remote/rural communities. The feasibility characteristics for wrist-worn biosensors are poorly described for post-COVID conditions and rural populations. METHODS: We prospectively recruited patients in rural communities who were enrolled in an at-home rehabilitation program for post-COVID conditions. They were asked to wear a FitBit Charge 2 device and biosensor parameters were analyzed [

Using Fitness Tracker Data to Overcome Pressure Insole Wear Time Challenges for Remote Musculoskeletal Monitoring.

Tibia shaft fractures are common lower extremity fractures that can require surgery and rehabilitation. However, patient recovery is often poor, partly due to clinicians' inability to monitor bone loading, which is critical to stimulating healing. We envision a future of patient care that includes at-home monitoring of tibia loading using pressure-sensing insoles. However, one issue is missing portions of daily loading due to limited insole wear time (e.g., not wearing shoes all day). Here, we introduce a method for overcoming this issue with a wrist-worn fitness tracker that can be worn all d

Building running-friendly cities: effects of streetscapes on running using 9.73 million fitness tracker data in Shanghai, China.

The association between built environment and physical activity has been recognized. However, how and to what extent microscale streetscapes are related to running activity remains underexplored, partly due to the lack of running data in large urban areas. Moreover, few studies have examined the interactive effects of macroscale built environment and microscale streetscapes. This study examines the main and interactive effects of the two-level environments on running intensity, using 9.73 million fitness tracker data from Keep in Shanghai, China. Results of spatial error model showed that: 1)

tinyRadar for Fitness: A Contactless Framework for Edge Computing.

Healthcare technology is evolving from a conventional hub-based system to a personalized healthcare system accelerated by rapid advancements in smart fitness trackers. Modern fitness trackers are mostly lightweight wearables and can monitor the user's health round the clock, supporting ubiquitous connectivity and real-time tracking. However, prolonged skin contact with wearable trackers can cause discomfort. They are susceptible to false results and breach of privacy due to the exchange of user's personal data over the internet. We propose tinyRadar, a novel on-edge millimeter wave (mmWave) ra
