Auditory scene analysis in music: A synthetic review.

Music is the synthesis of a multitude of components: the combination of spectrotemporal structures emerging from different acoustic or electronic instruments, carefully orchestrated to form a connected whole. From these complex textures, our auditory system groups components through a process called musical scene analysis (MSA). In this review, we aim to address several questions about MSA. What are the perceptual principles underpinning musical scene perception? How are these principles being probed with different experimental paradigms? What stimulus and listener factors shape MSA? And what

Grouping and gambling: a Gestalt approach to understanding the gambler's fallacy.

The gambler's fallacy was examined in terms of grouping processes. The gambler's fallacy is the tendency to erroneously believe that for independent events, recent or repeated instances of an outcome (e.g., a series of "heads" when flipping a coin) will make that outcome less likely on an upcoming trial. Grouping was manipulated such that a critical trial following a run of heads or tails was grouped together with previous trials (i.e., the last trial of "Block 1") or was the first trial of another group (the first trial of "Block 2"). As predicted, the gambler's fallacy was evident when the c

Contextual fear, gestalt memories, and the hippocampus.

This review examines the relationship between exploration and contextual fear conditioning. The fear acquired to places or contexts associated with aversive events is a form of Pavlovian conditioning. However, an initial period of exploration is necessary to allow the animal to form an integrated memory of the features of the context before conditioning can take place. The hippocampal formation plays a critical role in this process. Cells within the dorsal hippocampus are involved in the formation, storage and consolidation of this integrated representation of context. Projections from the sub

Row blindness in Gestalt grouping and developmental dyslexia.

A classic Gestalt figure is a 4 x 4 array of items grouped by similarity into either rows or columns. We found that some people do not see rows ("row blindness"). Furthermore, row blindness correlates with difficulties processing written language--more than half of the college-age dyslexics tested were row blind. Reading difficulties are probably not a cause of row blindness and forming rows by grouping is a part of reading, suggesting that row blindness might be one source of problems processing written language.

Relational sexuality: an understanding of low sexual desire.

Low sexual desire is discussed within the context of the relationship in which it occurs, with emphasis on each partner's intrapsychic issues as they intersect with the interpersonal issues between them. The conceptualization of the problem is based in object relations theory, whereas treatment involves systems theory and gestalt and experiential psychotherapy. Relational sexuality and intimacy in marriage are presented as foundations for treatment procedures. The therapy techniques are illustrated by case examples.

[Experiments on perception in schizophrenia (author's transl)].

Acute and chronic schizophrenic subjects were tested with 6 simple experimental tasks of visual stimulus selection. The 2 control groups were a group of non-psychiatric subjects and one of patients with other psychiatric diagnoses. The 6 experimental tasks represented three different types of attention: 1) differentiation between "figure" and "background", 2) concentration; 3) visual integration (Gestalt completion). The main result was that the acute group with paranoidal psychosis and hallucinations made significantly more mistakes in figure-background differentiation (grouping of patterns).

A User-Centered Data Visualization of Atherosclerotic Heart Disease Risk Factors.

High cholesterol levels significantly contribute to the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD), with a notable portion of ischemic heart disease cases linked to elevated cholesterol levels. Effective graphical displays of lipid panel tests and other cardiac risk factors are crucial for quick and accurate data interpretation, enabling early intervention for individuals with hyperlipidemia. Applying design theories such as Gestalt and distributed cognitive theories is essential for creating user-centered graphical data displays in the context of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. T

The correlation between sadomasochists' experience and their sadomasochistic behaviors and fantasies: A qualitative analysis of interviews.

Lacking a comprehensive understanding of sadomasochism makes difficulties in judicial dispositions, clinical interventions, and mental health services. This study explores the correlation between sadomasochists' growth experience and their sadomasochistic behaviors and fantasies. We interviewed 51 sadomasochists from a Chinese subcultural website, coded and analyzed the interview records, conducted correlation and cluster analyses on the reference points of the nodes of impressive experience and sadomasochistic behaviors and fantasies, and constructed the model of Experience-Behaviors and Fant

[The so-called body-mind problem].

THE PROBLEM: Even psychosomatic researchers seem to want to avoid the so-called body-mind problem, which is actually a mind-brain problem. In line with Beckermann (2008), the first the four possible positions on the mind-brain problem are presented. The debate over the past 100 years has revolved around the question of whether mental events are ontologically independent of brain physiology or whether they are in fact entirely determined by it. Such a physicalism approach based on properties (i.e., mental characteristics or phenomena are physical or can be completely reduced to physical charact

Synchronous change and perception of object unity: evidence from adults and infants.

Adults and infants display a robust ability to perceive the unity of a center-occluded object when the visible ends of the object undergo common motion (e.g. Kellman, P.J., Spelke, E.S., 1983. Perception of partly occluded objects in infancy. Cognitive Psychology 15, 483-524). Ecologically oriented accounts of this ability focus on the primary of motion in the perception of segregated objects, but Gestalt theory suggests a broader possibility: observers may perceive object unity by detecting patterns of synchronous change, of which common motion is a special case. We investigated this possibil

Visuospatial memory in apraxia: Exploring quantitative drawing metrics to assess the representation of local and global information.

Neuropsychological evidence suggests that visuospatial memory is subserved by two separable processing systems, with dorsal underpinnings for global form and ventral underpinnings for the integration of part elements. Previous drawing studies have explored the effects of Gestalt organisation upon memory for hierarchical stimuli, and we here present an exploratory study of an apraxic dorsal stream patient's (MH) performance. We presented MH with a stimulus set (previously reported by Riddoch et al., Cognitive Neuropsychology, 20(7), 641-671, 2003) and devised a novel quantitative scoring system

From Gestalt boundary to psychological border: Perceptual structure constrains strategic planning and intention inference.

Why do humans so often become trapped in protracted conflicts even when peaceful settlement would be mutually beneficial? Across a series of experiments using a temporally extended territorial conflict game, we show that failures of intention inference play a central role in sustaining conflict and that payoff-irrelevant perceptual structure can substantially facilitate settlement. When conflict unfolds in a perceptually unstructured environment, participants' ability to distinguish defensive from offensive actions remains near chance, accompanied by a systematic bias toward inferring hostile

Structure learning and the posterior parietal cortex.

We propose a theory of structure learning in the primate brain. We argue that the parietal cortex is critical for learning about relations among the objects and categories that populate a visual scene. We suggest that current deep learning models exhibit poor global scene understanding because they fail to perform the relational inferences that occur in the primate dorsal stream. We review studies of neural coding in primate posterior parietal cortex (PPC), drawing the conclusion that neurons in this brain area represent potentially high-dimensional inputs on a low-dimensional manifold that en

Self-image Building protocol for treating depression in hypnosis.

This article explains the method of treating depression with an intervention called Self-Image Building. Several antecedents or correlates of depression are briefly discussed as they form a gestalt backdrop for the many therapeutic approaches that have been researched and promoted as treatment or solutions to depression. The rationale and construction of the intervention is illustrated with a brief case example. Self-Image Building is discussed in the context of other theories of self-image, over-generalization, negativity bias, and as an internal discriminative stimulus for performance. Self-

Constructional apraxia as a function of lesion locus and size in patients with focal brain damage.

Patients with penetrating missile wounds confined to one of the four brain quadrants were evaluated to determine the incidence and severity of constructional apraxia. The visual constructive tasks used were the WAIS Block Designs subtest and the Bender Gestalt (reproduction) Test. Estimates of lesion size were used to investigate the effect of this factor on constructional ability. Patients with right posterior lesion tended to perform least adequately in general, although significant differences were obtained only for the Bender Gestalt Test. The effect for lesion laterality was greater than

Come together, right now: dynamic overwriting of an object's history through common fate.

The objects around us constantly move and interact, and the perceptual system needs to monitor on-line these interactions and to update the object's status accordingly. Gestalt grouping principles, such as proximity and common fate, play a fundamental role in how we perceive and group these objects. Here, we investigated situations in which the initial object representation as a separate item was updated by a subsequent Gestalt grouping cue (i.e., proximity or common fate). We used a version of the color change detection paradigm, in which the objects started to move separately, then met and s

A belongingness principle of motion perception.

Four experiments are reported that investigated the role of the perceived coplanarity of a moving target with respect to a frame of reference in the third dimension on the perceived path of that target. When a target dot and small moving frame appeared coplanar, the dot's perceived trajectory was governed entirely by its changing position relative to the moving frame. However, when the target and a large stationary frame appeared in a different plane than the small moving frame, the motion of the dot was seen independently of the moving frame. The results support a belongingness principle of m

Art training and the Rey figure.

A 55-yr.-old woman who had had a meningioma removed many years previously performed well on various neuropsychological tests but showed apparent gross loss of gestalt in copying the Rey figure, and poor subsequent recall of the figure. Further investigation suggested that her copying style was at least partly attributable to her training in art and that she was capable of copying in a more usual fashion with subsequent improvement in recall.
