The human MAGE3 gene is expressed in a significant proportion of tumors of various histological types, but is silent in normal adult tissues other than testis and placenta. Antigens encoded by MAGE3 may therefore be useful targets for specific antitumor immunization. Two antigenic peptides encoded by the MAGE3 gene have been reported previously. One is presented to cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTL) by HLA-A1, the other by HLA-A2 molecules. Here we show that MAGE3 also codes for a peptide that is presented to CTL by HLA-B44. MAGE3 peptides containing the HLA-B44 peptide binding motif were synthesiz

Analysis of sex ratio in 301 siblings of 150 patients with early-onset pauciarticular juvenile rheumatoid arthritis revealed a male-to-female ratio of 1:2.00 in sibships with an HLA-B44+ proband, compared with a ratio of 1:1.05 in other sibships (G2 = 6.07, df = 1, p = 0.014). The siblings had a sex ratio of 1:0.8, when the HLA-B44 antigen was present in either parent but not transmitted to the proband. The capacity to distort the sex ratio was limited therefore to disease-associated HLA-B44 haplotypes.

To test whether MHC alleles associated with common variable immune deficiency (CVID) might also be over-represented in patients with normal serum immunoglobulin levels who suffer with recurrent sinopulmonary infections (RESPI), we identified 62 consecutive RESPI patients and compared their HLA-B and HLA-DR antigen frequencies to those of 60 consecutive patients with CVID, 1627 Alabama Caucasian bone marrow donors, and 997,230 published US Caucasians. Either HLA-B44, -B8, -DR3(17), or -DR7 was present in 74% of the RESPI and 85% of the CVID patients. HLA-B44 prevalence in particular proved iden

HLA class I and class II alleles of 32 Japanese patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and 136 healthy controls were analyzed by serological (class I) and DNA (class II) typing for any significance in the susceptibility to varicella-zoster virus (VZV). We recognized positive associations of the development of PHN with the HLA class I antigens HLA-A33 and -B44, and the HLA-A33-B44 haplotype. This haplotype is tightly linked to DRB1*1302 in a Japanese healthy population. However, no significant association between PHN and HLA class II alleles was observed with no linkage of the HLA haplotype

We describe two children who had Fisher syndrome subsequent to Campylobacter jejuni enteritis. The C. jejuni isolates from both patients, who lived in different areas, belonged to PEN 2: LIO 4. One patient had the following human leukocyte antigens (HLAs): HLA-A24, 33; B44, 52; DQ1; and DR2, 6 antigens. Another had the HLA-A24, 33; B44, 54; Cw1; DQ1, 4; and DR4, 6. An effort should be made to isolate C. jejuni from patients with Fisher syndrome and to perform HLA typing so that the pathogenesis of this syndrome can be clarified.

HLA-B44 is among the most frequent class I antigens in many populations studied so far. It has been subdivided into seven allelic forms that can only be discriminated by DNA typing. Using a simple PCR/sequence-specific oligonucleotide hybridization procedure, we have analysed the frequency distribution of B44 subtypes in three European populations from Slovenia, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. B*4402 and B*4403 were by far the predominant alleles, B*4404 and 4405 were rare, while B*4406 and B*4407 were not observed. Interestingly, B*4402 and 4403 occurred with different frequencies in the th

The major diseases associated with HLA-B27 (Reiter's disease, ankylosing spondylitis, acute anterior uveitis, and psoriatic arthritis) all occur much more commonly in men. Published evidence indicates that the antigen HLA-B27 is associated with high testosterone concentrations in men. Moreover, the antigen HLA-B44 exerts a protective effect on one of these diseases (psoriatic arthritis), and there are external grounds for supposing that HLA-B44 indexes an antiandrogenic process. These data are interpreted as support for the hypothesis (first adumbrated nearly 20 years ago) that HLA antigens in

BACKGROUND: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) supertypes are groups of functionally related alleles that present structurally similar antigens to the immune system.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze HLA class I supertype associations with clinical outcome in hospitalized Thai children with acute dengue illness.
METHODS: Seven hundred sixty-two patients and population-matched controls recruited predominantly in Bangkok were HLA-A and -B typed. HLA supertype frequencies were compared and tested for significant dengue disease associations using logistic regression analyses. Multivariable models were built by

PURPOSE: Approximately 15 to 20% of infertile men have azoospermia. In the Y chromosome a deletion, termed the azoospermic factor, has been found in some cases of idiopathic azoospermia. We investigate the relationship of factors in autosomal chromosomes (HLA class I antigens) to spermatogenesis failure in idiopathic azoospermia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 65 infertile Japanese men with idiopathic azoospermia. The frequency of the HLA allele reported in 1,216 healthy Japanese men was used as a control. HLA class I typing was performed by the National Institutes of Health standard ser

BACKGROUND: Various studies worldwide suggest that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) region may be involved in the genetic susceptibility of vitiligo but little information is available from India.
AIM: To find the HLA associated susceptibility to develop vitiligo in Indian patients and to detect role of HLA in familial vitiligo.
METHODS: This was a case controlled study which included all patients suffering from vitiligo over a period of one and half years. Clinical details were noted and sera collected from these patients were screened for the presence of HLA class I antibodies. The clinical f

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have suggested that Common Variable Immunodeficieny (CVID) can present as an autosomal dominant trait dependent on the inheritance of a set of uncommon mutations/alleles of TACI (transmembrane activator and calcium-modulator and cyclophilin ligand interactor) involving exons 3 or 4. Penetrance, however, appears to be incomplete. Among our clinic population, the greatest genetic linkage for CVID is to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on chromosome 6. The majority of our patients have inherited HLA *DQ2, *DR7, *DR3(17), *B8, and/or *B44. Of these, HLA*B44 was

We have evaluated the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) phenotype of six children with parainflammatory leukoencephalomyelitis (PIL). Patients with PIL demonstrate an increased prevalence of the HLA-A1, -A28, -B44, -DR6, and -DR7 antigens. These HLA associations are different from those reported in other inflammatory demyelinating diseases, including multiple sclerosis, optic neuritis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and chronic relapsing inflammatory polyneuropathy. The HLA constitution of the patient appears to be one important host factor in determining the nature of the immune response to an encephal

Host genetic factors, specifically major histocompatibility complex (MHC) influence the prognosis of COVID-19 infections. It plays a central role in the body's ability to recognize and respond to pathogens, including viruses like SARS-CoV-2. This study aims to identify the significant human leukocyte antigen B (HLA-B) allele genotypes associated with severe cases among SARS-CoV-2-positive patients attending the PCR unit in The Fever Hospital-Alexandria, Egypt. This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2022 through April 2023. Two swabs (nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal) were colle

The technical developments and expanded indications for testicular sperm extraction (TESE) with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) provide great advantages for patients with non-obstructive azoospermia. Such success, however, also means that genetic abnormalities in non-obstructive azoospermia can be transmitted to the next generation, demonstrating the importance of being able to understand the genetic background of non-obstructive azoospermia. We have previously reported that human leukocyte antigens (HLA)-A33 and -B44 in the HLA class I region and the HLA-DRB1*1302 allele in the HLA cl

The presence of anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL) has been associated with the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes. These autoantibodies occur in individuals with infections such as that produced by the human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) or with syphilis, but they can also occur in drug-induced lupus-like syndromes. In the present study, we analysed the presence of aPL (detected as lupus anti-coagulant) and its relationship with the MHC markers in 93 Caucasian psychiatric patients chronically treated with chlorpromazine. Forty-one out of 93 patients were positive for LA, and the

In this issue, Singh and co-workers describe the results of classical typing of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles in 1,404 vitiligo patients and 902 unaffected controls from North India and follow-up HLA typing in 355 cases and 441 controls from Gujarat. The increased frequency of DRB1*07:01 in North Indian and Gujarat populations with generalized and localized vitiligo and in several vitiligo populations studied previously suggests that it contributes to autoimmunity and destruction of melanocytes.

In order to investigate the immunogenetic mechanism of Behçet's disease, frequencies of HLA antigens were studied in patients. The subjects consisted of 66 patients and 99 normal controls. A lymphocyte cytotoxicity test was used for typing HLA-A, -B, -C, -DR, -DQ antigens. HLA-DP antigens were analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. A significant increase of HLA-B15 was observed in the patients. In contrast, no significant difference was observed in HLA-Bw52 which possesses only two different amino acids from HLA-B15. On the contrar

BACKGROUND: Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease (TA-GVHD) due to blood from HLA-homozygous related and unrelated blood donors has been described.
CASE REPORT: Fatal TA-GVHD due to the transfusion of HLA-matched platelets from an unrelated HLA-homozygous donor is reported. A 61-year-old man with a history of diabetes mellitus and myelodysplastic syndrome was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in November 1991. Induction chemotherapy resulted in aplasia, which was followed by a normocellular marrow with mild dysplasia and continued karyotypic abnormalities. High-dose chemoth
