[Hantavirus infections].

Hantaviruses are enveloped single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses that belong to the family Bunyaviridae. They are widely distributed and maintained in populations of specific insectivores or rodent host species (mice or rats). In their natural host, hantaviruses develop persistent and asymptomatic infections with lifelong virus shedding in excreta. Transmission to humans occurs via direct contact with faeces, urine and saliva of infected rodents, in particular by inhaling virus contaminated aerosol. There are a variety of virus types that occur in different geographic areas, dependent

[Hantavirus infections].

Hantaviruses are enveloped zoonotic RNA viruses hosted by rodents and responsible in the Americas for hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. In Europe, they cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and its milder form, nephropathia epidemica. The disease begins abruptly with high fever, chills, headache, back pain and abdominal pain associated with nausea and vomiting. Diagnosis is primarily made by serology. There is currently no specific medication or preventive available in Europe. Treatment is symptomatic.

Hantavirus infections.

Over the past few decades understanding and recognition of hantavirus infection has greatly improved worldwide, but both the amplitude and the magnitude of hantavirus outbreaks have been increasing. Several novel hantaviruses with unknown pathogenic potential have been identified in a variety of insectivore hosts. With the new hosts, new geographical distributions of hantaviruses have also been discovered and several new species were found in Africa. Hantavirus infection in humans can result in two clinical syndromes: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary

Hantavirus infections.

Hantaviruses are the causative agents of the zoonotic diseases known as haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia, and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in the Americas. These pathogens are maintained in the wild by rodent reservoirs and are mainly transmitted via the aerosol route. The infection is chronic and apparently asymptomatic in host animals. Whilst HFRS is caused by Hantaan, Seoul, Dobrava and Puumala hantaviruses, HPS is associated with Sin Nombre-like viruses. Common clinical features of HFRS and HPS include fever, myalgia, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis an

Hantavirus Infections in Children.

Hantaviruses are rare but deadly pathogens. New World hantaviruses, primarily present in North and South America, cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome, which leads to death in up to one-third of affected patients. Old World hantaviruses, primarily endemic to Europe and Asia, cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and, dependent on the specific hantavirus, may cause death in up to 15% of patients. A heightened clinical suspicion is important for diagnosis of these conditions because important epidemiologic clues may exist at the time of presentation. A variety of testing modalities ex

[Hantaviruses and hantavirus infections].

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HVRS) has been for decades a topical problem for healthcare systems of many countries in the Eurasian continent. Viruses triggering HVRS alongside with other related viruses (but not pathogenic to man) were discovered in 70-80-ies and formed a new genus Hantavirus of the Bunyaviridae family. The study results of a severe outbreak of the respiratory disease with the mortality rate of 60% (South-West of the USA, 1933) showed that hantaviruses were also among the causative agents. Later, the disease was designated as hantavirus cardio-pulmonary syndrome. By

Procalcitonin in hantavirus infections.

In hantavirus infections levels of serum leukocytes or C-reactive protein are usually elevated to levels found in serious bacterial infections. However, procalcitonin in patients infected with hantavirus has not yet been discussed in the literature. A total of 29 adult patients with hantavirus infection, 30 with sepsis, and 19 with tick-borne encephalitis were included in this observational retrospective study. The median procalcitonin level in patients with hantavirus infection was 0.53 μg/L (range 0.09-11.71 μg/L), in the group with sepsis 4.33 μg/L (range 0.08-161.1 μg/L) and in patients wi

[Epidemiologic problems in hantavirus infections].

The objective of the submitted paper was to present some information pertaining to epidemiological problems of hantavirus infection. In the Czech Republic the prevalence of these infections is not alarming but in the world cases of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) as well as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) are reported. On the territory of the Czech Republic there are foci of hantaviruses and in conjunction with summer tourism or working activities abroad the import of this infection cannot be ruled out. With regard to the serious character of some forms of the disease it is e

Hantavirus Infections among Military Forces.

INTRODUCTION: Hantaviruses cause two kinds of clinical syndromes. Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is caused by Hantaan virus in Asia, Puumala virus (PUUV) and Dobrava virus in Europe, and Seoul virus worldwide. Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome is caused by Sin Nombre virus in North America and Andes virus and related viruses in Latin America. All hantaviruses are carried by rodents and insectivores. Humans are infected via inhaled aerosols of rodent excreta. In the history, there are several epidemics of acute infectious diseases during many wars, which have been suggested or proven t

[Prognostic factors in hantavirus infections].

The hantaviruses classified in Hantavirus genus of Bunyaviridae family, may cause two different types of clinical conditions, namely hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Mortality may reach up to 40% in these infections. Hantavirus subtypes (Sin Nombre, Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala, Dobrava, etc) with different virulences represent one of the most significant factors affecting the mortality. Additionally, many other factors including age, gender, humoral immune response, genetic factors, patient's clinical and laboratory findings, transfusion, mechan

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: Three men, aged 32, 56 and 41 years, respectively, were hospitalized within two weeks because of flu-like symptoms, limb pain and abdominal pain. Being in a febrile, impaired general condition, pressure pains in the upper abdomen and flank pains were particularly noteworthy. INVESTIGATIONS: The results of the examinations, indicating acute renal insufficiency, thrombocytopenia and elevated lactate dehydrogenase were typical of a hantavirus infection, and positive serology for the puumala virus confirmed this suspicion. Ultrasonography indicated nephritic change

Hantavirus infections: epidemiology and pathogenesis.

Hantaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses that persistently infect rodent hosts without ill-effect. The host persistently excretes virus in urine and saliva. Man becomes infected from the rodents when one enters the ecological niche of the other. There are two major clinical presentations--haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, found worldwide in various forms and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, found only in the Americas. This review examines the virology, epidemiology and pathogenesis of these emerging pathogens.

Serologically verified hantavirus infections in Hungary.

Between 1987 and 1993 the etiological diagnosis of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) of 55 patients was confirmed using hantavirus-specific serology. The geographical distribution of cases indicated that at least two different territories of Hungary are endemic for hantaviruses. These possible natural foci are different from, but overlapping with the region endemic for tick-borne encephalitis virus. Patients sera were shown to react differently with reagents prepared from different hantaviruses, indicating that different types are present simultaneously in both natural foci.

Uncovering the mysteries of hantavirus infections.

Hantaviruses are negative-sense single-stranded RNA viruses that infect many species of rodents, shrews, moles and bats. Infection in these reservoir hosts is almost asymptomatic, but some rodent-borne hantaviruses also infect humans, causing either haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS). In this Review, we discuss the basic molecular properties and cell biology of hantaviruses and offer an overview of virus-induced pathology, in particular vascular leakage and immunopathology.
