Journal of occupational medicine. : official publication of the Industrial Medical Association1986eng
The efforts to clean up hazardous waste disposal sites have led to an increasing number of workers involved in these activities. Industrial hygiene surveys have demonstrated that these workers are potentially exposed to low levels of multiple contaminants during the work day and to high levels of some contaminants for very short time periods. Personal protective equipment and work practices are important components in protecting workers from these exposures. Medical monitoring for these workers is problematic. While monitoring for the potential health effects of these multiple exposures may be

The reliability of a treatment process is addressed in terms of achieving a regulatory effluent concentration standard and the design safety factors associated with the treatment process. This methodology was then applied to two aqueous hazardous waste treatment processes: packed tower aeration and activated sludge (aerobic) biological treatment. The designs achieving 95 percent reliability were compared with those designs based on conventional practice to determine their patterns of conservatism. Scoping-level treatment costs were also related to reliability levels for these treatment process

Although no one knows exactly how much toxic material continues to be released into our environment, most observers believe the amount is substantial. In the last few years, in the state of Massachusetts alone, 22 communities have had their municipal water supplies seriously compromised by chemical contamination, (1) causing alarm and dismay among water users. Nation-wide, public concern has reached the point that in some opinion polls, hazardous waste ranks second only behind inflation as a cause of serious worry. Despite widespread anxiety, shared by public health officials, few studies have

This paper summarizes the findings gleaned from detailed clinical examinations of three groups of residents who were exposed to trichloroethylene in well water. Also summarized are diagnostic findings for peripheral neuropathy. A detailed description of the neuropsychological test results is included, as well as a summary of domain-specific findings and diagnostic outcomes. A high rate of cognitive deficits of the type seen in patients with central nervous system dysfunction attributable to solvent exposure was seen. In addition, there was a clear developmental trend: subjects who were younger

Cobalt-bearing magnetite layers in pressurized heavy-water reactor (PHWR) feeder pipes generate radiation fields, while hydrazine-based decontamination produces hazardous effluent containing residual hydrazine and dissolved metals. This study developed an integrated low-hydrazine decontamination process comprising oxide dissolution, solid-liquid separation, metal recovery, and advanced oxidation. A Cu-free solution containing 29 mM sulfuric acid and 10 mM hydrazine removed Co-doped magnetite more effectively than conventional chemical decontamination process using 50 mM hydrazine and 0.5 mM Cu

Published reports to assess incidents in hazardous waste operations are scarce. This study was designed to evaluate incident trends in a relatively large hazardous waste cleanup company. The data for 6.5 years, winter 1990 through spring 1996, provided 1848 incident reports with 87% involving injury/illness cases. Over 75% of injury/illness incidents were due to mechanical agents, 10% occurred because of chemical exposure, 5% involved poisonous plants and insect bites, 2% resulted from temperature extremes, 1% were from cumulative injuries/illnesses, and in 7% the agent was not recorded. After pesticide application onto crops, waste plastic pesticide containers (WPPC) may still contain residual active substances (AS) that are typically hazardous. Specific limits exist per pesticide active substance to classify WPPC as hazardous or non-hazardous wastes. The most frequent limit is 0.1% w/w (mass of active substance per mass of as received container). Triple rinsing is a widely used management technique to decontaminate WPPC and determine their downstream management. However, its efficiency needs to be evaluated for new types of pesticides. The goal of the work was to measure the

The risk of heat stress for hazardous waste workers is high due to the unique aspects of their work, particularly the use of vapor-barrier clothing. Such garments interfere with one of the body's principal mechanisms for dissipating heat, that is, evaporative cooling. Under such conditions the body's heat load rapidly increases and heat-related illness may occur. The medical surveillance examination is an important tool for identifying those workers with risk factors for developing heat stress or underlying diseases that may be exacerbated by heat strain. Further testing to determine fitness f

Low hydraulic conductivity and high chemical immobilization are the two characteristics that make bentonite a mandatory construction material for hazardous waste containment applications. We performed a comprehensive batch sorption study on Barmer bentonite (BB), an exclusive construction clay mined in India, using lead (Pb2+) as a model contaminant. The maximum adsorption capacity of BB was obtained as 55 mg g-1 at pH 5 and 27 ± 2℃. Adsorption was extremely rapid, with equilibrium attained <5 min for the BB. Increased adsorbent dosage resulted in higher Pb2+ percentage removal, while adsorpti

Environmental pollution, primarily from industrialization, has caused significant adverse effects to humans, animals, and the ecosystem. Attempts have been made to reduce and prevent these pollutants through better waste management practices. Incineration is one such practice, which seeks to prevent adverse health impacts to future generations by destroying waste today, without increasing risk to those living near incineration facilities in the process. As with any industrial process, however, proper design and operation are important requirements to ensure the facility can be operated safely.

Healthcare facilities generate various types of waste, including hazardous waste, which poses significant risks to health and the environment if not managed properly. In many developing countries like Ethiopia, hazardous waste is often treated the same as general waste, leading to contamination of healthcare workers, patients, and communities. While healthcare workers play a key role in managing hazardous waste and most studies in Ethiopia have focused on general waste management. Therefore, this study aims to assess hazardous healthcare waste management practices and associated factors among

A large amount of energetic materials including propellants, high explosives, pyrotechnics are subjected to disposal either due to expiry of their useful life or rejection in the manufacturing process. The environmental regulations do not allow the hazardous materials for open burning / detonation in view of the health hazard involved in these operations. The present paper describes the hazard potential of energetic materials and associated hazardous chemicals. It also deals with global technological status for remedial measures of hazardous chemicals along with their merits and demerits.

A health assessment was performed in a recently opened landfill for toxic waste. The site has received 14,000 tons of hazardous waste, confined in drums or deposited as bulk material, which were left outdoors for seven months. The analysis in some samples showed that the waste is rich in heavy metals, however we did not find high levels of contaminates in air or surface soil in different areas on-site. When compared to a control group, high-risk workers show higher levels of arsenic in urine and hair, and non-specific symptoms (irritability and insomnia). But among groups, we did not find stat

7 chemicals commonly found at the industrial waste sites were tested with the Tradescantia-Micronucleus (Trad-MCN) assay to evaluate their clastogenic potential. Chemicals selected from the US EPA Superfund Priority 1 list were: aldrin, arsenic trioxide, 1,2-benz[a, h]anthracene, dieldrin, heptachlor, lead tetraacetate and tetrachloroethylene. Results of repeated tests for clastogenicity yielded the minimum effective dose (MED) for clastogenicity of 0.44 ppm for lead tetraacetate, 1.88 ppm for heptaclor, 3.81 ppm for dieldrin and arsenic trioxide and 1,2-benz[a, h]anthracene yielded positive r

UNLABELLED: Waste is part of the agenda of the European Environment and Health Process and included among the topics of the Sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health. Disposal and management of hazardous waste are worldwide challenges. We performed a systematic review to evaluate the evidence of the health impact of hazardous waste exposure, applying transparent and a priori defined methods. The following five steps, based on pre-defined systematic criteria, were applied. 1. Specify the research question, in terms of "Population-Exposure-Comparators-Outcomes" (PECO).

Environmental health and environmental quality issues along the U.S.-Mexico border have been of concern for several years. The enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the presence of the maquiladoras (foreign-owned industries using imported raw materials) have intensified those concerns recently. Efforts to assess these issues are complicated by the fact that many of the issues affecting the border region are within federal jurisdiction, but the problems are regional and local in nature. Thus, state and local governments become involved with public concerns about real and pote

Given the occupational risks of hazardous waste workers, this study was conducted to explore possible differences in medical surveillance practices among blue and white collar workers. Demographic and medical surveillance data were collected from 636 white collar and 206 blue collar trainees, enrolled in health and safety training courses. Overall, 4.5% of the trainees reported being ill or injured because of hazardous substances. Significant differences (P < .0001) were noted between groups; blue collar trainees were more likely to have been ill or injured. Differences also existed for medica
