Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) cause acute, self-limiting hepatic infections that are usually spread by the fecal-oral route in humans. Naturally occurring and experimental infections are possible in a variety of nonhuman primates and, in the case of HEV, a number of other species. Many advances in understanding the pathogenesis of these viruses have come from studies in experimental animals. In general, animals infected with these viruses recapitulate the histologic lesions seen in infected humans, but typically with less severe clinical and histopathological manifestatio

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) commonly causes acute hepatitis in humans and is transmitted through the fecal-oral route or by ingestion of contaminated food or water. HAV infection generally follows a self-limiting course; it can seldom cause fulminant hepatitis that increases the risk of mortality. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported fatal case of fulminant hepatitis caused by HAV in a 40-year-old male with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The HAV genotype in this case was IA, which has recently become common globally among people living with HIV (PLWHIV), intraven

Despite the advances in therapy, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) still represent a significant global health burden, both as major causes of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and death worldwide. HBV is capable of incorporating its covalently closed circular DNA into the host cell's hepatocyte genome, making it rather difficult to eradicate its chronic stage. Successful viral clearance depends on the complex interactions between the virus and host's innate and adaptive immune response. One encouraging fact on hepatitis B is the development and effective distribution of t

The epidemiology and clinical manifestations of hepatitis E virus (HEV) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) are similar. However, two distinct diseases develop after exposure to each one of the viruses, which are apparently unrelated clinically. It is interesting to note that all reported epidemics and single cases of acute HEV infection indicate previous exposure to HAV. This fact leads us to hypothesize that acute HEV infection is dependent on past infection by hepatitis A virus, and that the sequential infections could not solely be explained on independent outbreaks. This hypothesis, where past HA

A 7-year-old patient is reported who suffered from fatigue and jaundice due to chronic hepatitis. He had acquired hepatitis A virus infection in his community and communicated the disease to his German family 4 weeks later. While the other family members recovered from acute viral hepatitis A, the patient presented 10 weeks after the onset of hyperbilirubinemia (12 mg/dl) with the histology of chronic hepatitis, absence of markers for viral persistence, presence of autoantibodies against smooth muscle (1:320) and the asialoglycoprotein receptor (1:600), and marked hypergammaglobulinemia (3700

Previous studies reported that the hepatitis C virus (HCV) could help disseminate the hepatitis D virus (HDV) in vivo through hepatitis B virus (HBV)-unrelated ways, but with essentially inconclusive results. To try to shed light on this still-debated topic, 146 anti-HCV-positive subjects (of whom 91 HCV/HIV co-infected, and 43 with prior HCV eradication) were screened for anti-HDV antibodies (anti-HD), after careful selection for negativity to any serologic or virologic marker of current or past HBV infection. One single HCV/HIV co-infected patient (0.7%) tested highly positive for anti-HD, b

Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable infection caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Over 150 million new infections of hepatitis A occur annually. HAV causes an acute inflammatory reaction in the liver that usually resolves spontaneously without chronic sequelae. However, up to 20% of patients experience a prolonged or relapsed course and <1% experience acute liver failure. Host factors, such as immunological status, age, pregnancy and underlying hepatic diseases, can affect the severity of disease. Anti-HAV IgG antibodies produced in response to HAV infection persist for life and protect ag

Over the past two decades, progress in understanding human infections with hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) has been eclipsed by the priority of combating persistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections. During that time, the global burden of liver disease caused by enteric hepatitis viruses has not abated. Because of vaccines, hepatitis A has become increasingly a disease of adults instead of early childhood in many regions of the world, resulting in an age-related shift toward more severe disease. HEV has remained endemic in many developing countr

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is a major cause of acute hepatitis including acute liver failure. Hepatitis B infection (HBV) occurs worldwide, with the highest rates in Asian and African countries, and there are several reports that HAV infection may have a more severe clinical course in patients with chronic HBV infection. We previously demonstrated that Japanese miso extracts have inhibitory effects on HAV replication. In the present study, we examined the replication of HAV and HBV in a hepatocyte superinfection model and the inhibitory effects of Japanese miso extracts on both viruses.

Breastmilk specimens from three women with acute hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection were studied. Anti-HAV immunoglobulin M and immunoglobulin G antibodies were detected in serum and breastmilk specimens of the three women. The three women also had serum HAV RNA. However, HAV RNA was detected only in two of the three breastmilk specimens. It is interesting that none of the three infants contracted clinical HAV infection. Furthermore, mothers with HAV infection should not be encouraged to discontinue breastfeeding.

Viral hepatitis is an infection of human hepatocytes resulting in liver damage. Dual infection of two hepatotropic viruses affects disease outcomes. The hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are two enterically transmitted viruses; they are single-stranded RNA viruses and have common modes of transmission. They are transmitted mainly by the fecal-oral route and ingestion of contaminated food, though the HAV has no animal reservoirs. The HAV and HEV cause acute self-limiting disease; however, the HEV, but not HAV, can progress to chronic and extrahepatic infections. The HAV/HEV du

Hepatitis C virus has been shown to be responsible for most cases of posttransfusion hepatitis, as well as for sporadic non-A, non-B viral hepatitis. Hepatitis C virus has also been implicated in the development of primary hepatocellular carcinoma, autoimmune hepatitis, and fulminant viral hepatitis. Although the role of the parenteral transmission of hepatitis C virus is well established, its route of transmission in cases of sporadic infection remains unclear. Sexual transmission is suspected but not confirmed. Recent work regarding treatment has shown interferon alfa to be effective, but th

We describe the case of a 27-year-old man who presented acute hepatitis due to hepatitis A virus infection. Over the following weeks he consistently presented elevated transaminase levels and jaundice. Antinuclear and anti-smooth muscle antibodies, hypergammaglobulinemia and periportal necrosis were detected in the liver biopsy. The patient was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and responded well to treatment with immunosuppressive drugs. This case, as well as other published reports, suggest that in certain individuals, acute hepatitis A may be the decisive factor leading to autoimmune hepa

Background and Clinical Significance: Simultaneous, multiple infections coinfections caused by zoonotic or fecal-orally transmitted diseases are common in tropical and subtropical regions. Published data report that leptospirosis may coexist with other infections, complicating the clinical presentation and trajectory due to overlapping symptoms and leading to more severe clinical progress. Case Presentation: We describe a clinical case of a 34-year-old female diagnosed with a triple infection caused by Leptospira, Hepatitis A Virus, and Hepatitis E Virus. To our knowledge, this is the first ca

The etiology of sporadic acute hepatitis was studied in 334 consecutive patients from Taiwan (237 men and 97 women, aged 16-81 years), with emphasis on the role of hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis E virus (HEV), and GB virus-C/hepatitis G virus (GBV-C/HGV) in acute non-A, non-B (NANB) hepatitis and in HBsAg carriers with superimposed acute hepatitis. According to the conventional diagnostic criteria, there were 12 cases (3.6%) of acute hepatitis A, 17 cases (5.1%) of acute hepatitis B, 128 cases (38.3%) of acute NANB hepatitis, and 177 cases (53.0%) of acute hepatitis in HBsAg carriers (thos

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is one of the most common infectious etiologies of acute hepatitis worldwide. The virus is known to be transmitted fecal-orally, resulting in symptoms ranging from asymptomatic infection to fulminant hepatitis. HAV can also be transmitted through oral-anal sex. Residents from regions of low endemicity for HAV infection often remain susceptible in their adulthood. Therefore, clustered HAV infections or outbreaks of acute hepatitis A among men who have sex with men and injecting drug users have been reported in countries of low endemicity for HAV infection. The duration o
