Medical workers should have anti-HBV antibody to protect HBV infection in the hospital. If they have not anti-HBV antibody, they should receive HBV vaccination. HBV vaccination program is as follows: 10 micrograms, s.c., 0, 1, 6 months. In case of HBV contamination, 1,000 IU hepatitis B immune globulin(HBIG) and/or 10 micrograms HB vaccine should be administered judging from HBV markers of contaminated subjects and HBV load of patients. The HCV vaccine is not available. In case of HCV contamination, it is unnecessary to treat just after accident. If acute hepatitis C is evolved in those subjec

To evaluate the effect of hepatitis delta virus on the level of replication of hepatitis B virus and to assess the clinical significance that such an effect might have on the final outcome of the infection, the serological profile of hepatitis B virus DNA was investigated in 153 patients with acute or chronic hepatitis B virus infection with or without associated delta infection. Serum hepatitis B virus DNA was detected in 57% of patients with acute hepatitis B, 67% of those with acute hepatitis B virus-hepatitis delta virus coinfection and 25% of HBsAg carriers with hepatitis delta virus supe

This infographic about hepatitis B virus explores its replication cycle, natural history of infection and pathogenesis, and how this can be controlled and treated. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a common worldwide blood-borne pathogen. Chronic hepatitis B can progress to an inactive carrier state, and then, in some patients, give rise to cirrhosis and cancer of the liver, leading to death. An HBV surface-antigen vaccine is effective, but treatments are currently not curative. HBV replicates via reverse transcription. Its covalently closed circular (ccc) DNA in the nucleus encodes a pregenomic RNA

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is still a worldwide health concern. While divergent factors are involved in its pathogenesis, it is now clear that HBV RNAs, principally templates for viral proteins and viral DNAs, have diverse biological functions involved in HBV pathogenesis. These functions include viral replication, hepatic fibrosis and hepatocarcinogenesis. Depending on the sequence similarities, HBV RNAs may act as sponges for host miRNAs and may deregulate miRNA functions, possibly leading to pathological consequences. Some parts of the HBV RNA molecule may function as viral-derived miRNA, whic

Although hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) serum clearance is an important milestone in the natural history of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, HBsAg-negative patients are at risk of liver cancer and liver-related death, especially when progressive fibrosis is present. HBsAg-negative/anti-HBV core antibody-positive patients should be carefully evaluated and managed accordingly for the presence of significant liver fibrosis, other viral coinfections, occult HBV infection, risk of HBV reactivation, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Antiviral prophylaxis should be initiated in isola

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major health problem in the United States; in 1995, approximately 128,000 cases occurred. Transmission of HBV occurs primarily by blood exchange (eg, by shared needles during injection drug use) and by sexual contact. Persons infected early in life are much more likely to become chronically infected than those infected during adulthood: as many as 90% of infants infected perinatally develop chronic infection and up to 25% will die of HBV-related chronic liver disease as adults. Clinical signs of acute hepatitis occur in about 50% of infected adults but in

The epidemiology of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is geographically diverse, with population prevalence, age and mode of acquisition, and likelihood of progression to chronic infection mutually interdependent. The burden of chronic HBV infection is increasingly being recognized, with cirrhosis and liver cancer attributable to HBV continuing to increase. The outcomes of chronic HBV infection are affected by a range of factors, including viral genotype, the presence of coinfections with other blood-borne viruses, and the impact of other causes of liver disease. The increased recognition of H

Approximately 5% of the world population is infected by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) which causes a necroinflammatory liver disease of variable duration and severity. Chronically infected patients with active liver disease carry a high risk of developing cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The immune response to HBV-encoded antigens is responsible both for viral clearance and for disease pathogenesis during this infection. While the humoral antibody response to viral envelope antigens contributes to the clearance of circulating virus particles, the cellular immune response to the envelope,

In endemic areas, hepatitis C virus (HCV)/hepatitis B virus (HBV) coinfection is common, and patients with coinfection have a higher risk of developing liver disease such as hepatocellular carcinoma, liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. In such cases, HCV predominates, and HBV replication is suppressed by HCV. HCV core proteins and interferons that are activated by HCV are responsible for the suppression of HBV. Immunosuppression is also seen in patients with HCV and HBV coinfections. A decrease in HCV-neutralizing antibody response and circulation of Th1-like Tfh cells is observed in patients with H

Occult HBV infection is a well-recognised clinical entity characterised by the detection of HBV-DNA in serum and/or in liver in the absence of detectable hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Occult HBV infection has been described not only in patients who have resolved an acute or chronic HBV infection but also in patients without any serological markers of a past HBV infection. Occult HBV infection in patients with chronic HCV infection may induce more severe liver disease and lower response rate to interferon treatment. The existence of occult HCV infections has been also reported more recen

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a worldwide health problem and may cause acute, fulminant, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, or hepatocelullar carcinoma (HCC). Infection with HBV in infancy or early childhood may lead to a high rate of persistent infection (25-90%), while the rates are lower if infection occurs during adulthood (5-10%). In most endemic areas, infection occurs mainly during early childhood and mother-to-infant transmission accounts for approximately 50% of the chronic infection cases. Hepatitis B during pregnancy does not increase maternal mortality or morbidity or the r

INTRODUCTION: With advances in hepatitis B virus (HBV) therapies, there is a need to identify serum biomarkers that assess the HBV covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) reservoir and predict functional cure in HIV/HBV co-infection.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, combining samples from HIV/HBV co-infected participants enrolled in two ACTG interventional trials, proportions achieving HBsAg less than 0.05 log10 IU/ml and HBV RNA less than log10 1.65 U/ml or not detected (LLoQ/NEG) in response to DUAL [tenofovir TDF+emtricitabine (FTC)] vs. MONO [FTC or lamivudine (3TC)] HBV-active ART,

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite the availability of HBV vaccinations that are 98% to 100% effective, an estimated 820,000 annual deaths were attributed to HBV in 2019, mainly related to the sequelae of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Because disease prevalence is concentrated outside of the United States, it is overlooked, but with expanded vaccination recommendations provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and recommended screening, as well as heightened awareness by health care providers

To evaluate the factors determining the severity of chronic hepatitis B virus infection and the interactions of human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis delta virus infections, we retrospectively analyzed 260 patients, 146 of whom were followed for a mean of 31.4 +/- 1.8 mo. Human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis delta virus status and aminotransferase activities, histological activity index, alcohol consumption and the prevalence of cirrhosis were investigated. The patients included 54 homosexuals, 19 parenteral drug abusers and 187 subjects with other or unidentifie

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between genotype of hepatitis B virus and hepatitis B virus related-glomerular nephritis in (HBV-GN) children.
METHOD: Totally 176 HBV-DNA positive children with chronic hepatitis B were randomly collected. Among the 176 patients, 92 were HBV carriers, 84 were cases with chronic hepatitis. The genotypes of their serum HBV, liver function, and HBV-DNA load were detected. When children showed nephrotic syndrome, renal biopsy was performed.
RESULT: Of the serum samples of 176 cases, 85 (48.3%) were genotype C, 72 (40.9%) were genotype B, 13 (7.4%) were

BACKGROUND: In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) co-infected patients from sub-Saharan Africa with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative status, data are limited on the evolution of HBV activity when antiretroviral treatment (ART) is absent.
METHODS: A total of 43 HBeAg-negative co-infected patients not indicated for ART (per concomitant World Health Organization recommendations) were followed during participation in a randomized controlled trial in Côte d'Ivoire. Chronic HBeAg-negative phases were classified at yearly visits and defined as 'infection' (HBV DNA ≤

Occult hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection (OBI) is defined as the presence of replication-competent HBV DNA in the liver or blood of individuals who are seronegative for hepatitis B surface antigen. The prevalence of OBI varies hugely according to the local endemicity of chronic HBV infection and risk of HBV exposure, ranging from 0.8% in the general population to >10% in those with hepatitis C virus or HIV infection, and to >40% in individuals with isolated positive antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc). Diagnosing OBI remains challenging due to extremely low and fluctuating levels o
