Journal of the National Medical Association2010eng
BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disproportionately affects black women. Nearly two-thirds of all female HIV cases reported to the CDC are black, and HIV is the leading cause of death among black women aged 25 to 34 years. The greatest HIV transmission risk among black women is sexual intercourse with a man, although the role of bisexual men is not clear.
METHODS: The CDC and collaborating partners conducted behavioral surveys at 7 historically black colleges and universities from January 2005 to April 2007.
RESULTS: Of the 2705 black female students aged 18 to 29 years who wer

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We searched PubMed, CINAHL Plus, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC to identify peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025 that discussed PrEP at HBCUs. We sought to examine PrEP research, with a focus on PrEP implementation strategies, at HBCUs. Two authors reviewed titles, abstracts, and full texts against the inclusion criteria. Six articles were included in this review.
RECENT FINDINGS: Two studies focused on formative PrEP research, two on organizational readiness, and three on post-implementation outcomes. Formative research showed PrEP is acceptable

OBJECTIVE: Due to the disproportionate impact of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) among African American young adults, the authors explored (1) number of historically black college and university (HBCU) campuses with existing HIV prevention policies and services and (2) perceived barriers for implementing HIV prevention services.
METHODS: Semistructured telephone surveys were conducted with health administrators from 25 HBCUs.
RESULTS: Twenty-four of 25 (96%) health administrators responded. Twelve of 24 administrators (50%) reported having no formal

IMPORTANCE: Black adults may derive long-term cognitive benefits from attendance at a historically Black college or university (HBCU) compared with a predominantly White institution (PWI). This association has not been evaluated in a nationwide sample.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the association between HBCU vs PWI attendance and cognitive health among later-life Black adults.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study, a prospective cohort study that recruited Black and White US adults aged 45 years and ol

OBJECTIVE: This literature review provides an analysis of the current state of the empirical research on sexual health among students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
METHODS: Several electronic databases were used to identify 24 empirical studies that met criteria for inclusion in this review.
RESULTS: The results indicated that perceived human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk, religiosity, HIV testing, condom use, and substance use were as high or higher for black HBCU students in comparison with students of other racial/ethnic groups.
COMMENT: Consistent w

This study provides critical evidence of the diversity of college students' experiences with intimate partner violence (IPV) and their informal and formal help-seeking behaviors at a historically Black college and university (HBCU). The study collected data on college students (N = 266) in fall 2021 using a one-site cross-sectional survey data. Findings revealed that many students at the HBCU reported IPV victimization (68.4%), IPV perpetration (68.0%), and coexperience of IPV victimization and perpetration (61.3%) in the past 12 months, but a few student survivors of IPV sought help from form

Studies indicate that mental health literacy (MHL) is low among college students. Previous studies report that male college students score lower on MHL than female college students. MHL is connected to mental health help-seeking behavior. Black male college students are shown to be at higher risk for mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, yet are less likely to seek help for these problems compared with other racial groups. Challenges with mental health can lead to significant negative consequences, such as poor academic performance, social isol

UNLABELLED: Low energy availability (LEA) is common among female student-athletes and contributes to reduced bone mineral density and hormonal dysfunction. However, limited research exists on student-athletes of color, making it difficult to generalize results across populations, particularly Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) student-athletes.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the energy needs and LEA prevalence, with or without eating disorder (ED) risk, among HBCU female student-athletes.
METHODS: Twenty-seven female student-athletes (age = 19 ± 1 year; height = 166.9 ± 7.

BACKGROUND: This study examined human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related health literacy and prevention among students at a Southeastern Historical Black College and University (HBCU) using the Integrative Health Literacy Model and the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research.
METHODS: Seven gender-specific focus groups (n = 20) were created between June and October 2023. The discussions explored health and HIV information-seeking behaviors, knowledge, prevention practices, and campus culture. Transcripts were analyzed using the domains of health literacy and the Consolidated Fram

In the United States, approximately 25% of minors have witnessed a violent act, specifically physical assault. African Americans from under-served backgrounds are more likely than other racial and ethnic groups to be exposed to traumatic events. However, there is scant literature examining violence exposure, SC, and life satisfaction collectively, specifically in an African American college sample. The current study sought to determine the associations among violence exposure, SC components, and life satisfaction in an African American college sample. The current sample was comprised of 356 pa

Alcohol consumption among college students continues to be a significant public health concern for colleges and universities across the country. However, a preponderance of research primarily included White samples from predominantly white institutions. Unsurprisingly, this practice limits what is known regarding alcohol consumption among African American male college students on historically Black campuses. Notably, as a "rite of passages" from childhood to adulthood, early exposure to alcohol consumption has been viewed as a cultural norm in African American families. The negative consequenc

Background Type 2 diabetes (T2D) disproportionately affects African Americans, yet data on diabetes awareness, dietary behaviors, and anthropometric risk factors among students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) remain limited. This study examined the relationships among T2D awareness, healthy eating patterns, and anthropometric risk factors in African American college students attending an HBCU. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 211 African American students (146 women, 65 men) aged 18-40 years at Morgan State University, Maryland. T2D awareness w

BACKGROUND: There is an urgent need to increase diversity among scientific investigators in the HIV research field to be more reflective of communities highly affected by the HIV epidemic. Thus, it is critical to promote the inclusion and advancement of early-stage scholars from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in HIV science and medicine.
METHODS: To widen the HIV research career pathway for early-stage scholars from underrepresented minority groups, the National Institutes of Health supported the development of the Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion P

BACKGROUND: Limited access to fruits and vegetables remains a significant barrier among underserved populations, particularly within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Evidence from previous studies suggests that prescription programs, which provide incentives for fresh produce consumption, are effective in enhancing dietary quality and alleviating food insecurity.
OBJECTIVE: This pilot investigation assessed the impact of a tailored produce prescription intervention on changes in fruit and vegetable consumption among students at a Historically Black College and University

BACKGROUND: The physical therapy profession has historically been characterized by a lack of diversity. The challenge of increasing diversity is exacerbated by the lack of consensus on quantitative measures of performance that predict success in physical therapy programs. The purpose of our study is to determine if quantitative preadmission measures can be used to identify students at risk for academic difficulty in a doctor-of-physical-therapy (DPT) program at a historically Black college/university. A retrospective observational cohort design was used to evaluate factors that contributed to

Despite HIV/AIDS disproportionately impacting Black women in the United States, HIV knowledge, awareness, and uptake of prevention efforts like pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have been limited for this community. Since campus leaders can maintain the attention of Black college women for a sustained period, they are an ideal demographic for PrEP interventions. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to assess the awareness and knowledge of PrEP among Black Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) women, informing future possibilities and strategies for PrEP interventions and uptake

PURPOSE: To help create an inclusive environment, it is important to understand the experience of racism from medical students. The purpose of this study was to 1) Understand the experience of racism from medical students at two geographically similar medical schools but one being a Predominately White Institution (PWI) and the other a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), 2) Recognize similarities and differences in the racism students experience, and 3) Explore why students do not report the experienced racism.
METHODS: Third- and fourth-year medical students from HBCU and PWI m
