[Pandemic and Epidemic History as Nursing History?].

This paper is part of Forum COVID-19: Perspectives in the Humanities and Social Sciences. In the current COVID 19 pandemic, the importance of professional nursing is widely recognized. In German-speaking and international research, the history of nursing during pandemics and epidemics is largely unwritten. This paper gives an overview of questions and results in this research area and discusses the potential of a pandemic nursing history.

A brief history of nurse anesthesia practice.

Anesthetics have been administered for centuries, from opium poppy and leaches, to today's sophisticated agents and techniques. In the United States, nurses have been delivering safe, professional, cost-effective care for well over 100 years. Nurse anesthetists have weathered the storms of war and politics to become a strong force in the current health care arena. The following is a brief overview of their interesting journey.

Observations on nursing home residents with a history of hip fracture.

The authors evaluated nursing home residents with a prior history of hip fracture for osteopenia and its risk factors, and attempted to learn to what extent the residents' bone status had been considered by their primary care physicians. Thirty-one hip fracture residents in the Milwaukee VA nursing home were studied to determine their status with regard to bone mineral density of the proximal femur, and the following risk factors or predictors of osteopenia: history of smoking; history of fractures; calcium and vitamin D intake; underweight; immobility; hypogonadism; and administration of drug

The genetic family history assessment in gastroenterology nursing practice.

Genetic factors influence the risk for disease and the overall health of persons throughout their lifespan. The systematic collection of family history information in a three-generation format is the most important approach for the identification of individuals with a genetic susceptibility to most common diseases, and applying genetic concepts in healthcare. The detailed family history can play a critical role in diagnosis, lay the foundation for accurate risk assessment, and be used to develop subsequent education, individualized monitoring and management of the disease, and prevention measu

History of the roles of nurses caring for persons with mental retardation.

A historic examination of the major responsibilities of nurses in providing care to individuals with mental retardation indicates that the responsibilities have remained relatively constant, whereas the roles have shifted and expanded over time from nursing assistant activities to advanced practice roles. Regardless of the setting, nurses have been involved in primary and secondary prevention, case finding, health care management of the individual with mental retardation and their family across the life span, instruction about this care to other nurses, and referral. This specialty nursing pra

Natural history of feeding-tube use in nursing home residents with advanced dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the evidence that feeding-tube use in persons with advanced dementia is not associated with improved outcomes, there remains striking variation in their use. Yet, little is known about the national incidence of feeding-tube insertions, the circumstances of their insertion, and post-insertion health care use. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of Minimum Data Set merged onto Medicare Claims Files. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Nursing home residents (NHR) without a feeding tube. MEASUREMENTS: NHR were followed for up to 1 year to see whether a feeding tube was inserted and then follo

Natural history of change in physical function among long-stay nursing home residents.

BACKGROUND: Few longitudinal studies exist to guide clinicians or administrators on what functional outcomes can be expected among nursing home residents with different levels of cognitive impairment. Extrapolating from cross-sectional studies or from longitudinal studies of community-dwelling residents may provide misleading estimates of prognosis, hindering efforts to target preventive care. OBJECTIVE: To describe patterns of change in physical function on a quarterly basis over 1 year among long-stay nursing home residents grouped according to their level of cognitive impairment on admissi

The epidemiology and natural history of pressure ulcers in elderly nursing home residents.

We analyzed prospective data from 19,889 elderly residents of 51 nursing homes from 1984 to 1985 to determine the prevalence, incidence, and natural history of pressure ulcers. Among all residents admitted to nursing homes, 11.3% possessed a stage II through stage IV pressure ulcer. For those residents admitted to the nursing home without pressure ulcers during the study period, the 1-year incidence was 13.2%. This increased to 21.6% by 2 years of nursing home stay. People already residing in a nursing home at the start of the study had a 1-year incidence of 9.5%, which increased to 20.4% by 2

The natural history of urinary incontinence subtypes in the Nurses' Health Studies.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence subtypes often differ by symptom severity and treatment profiles; in particular, mixed urinary incontinence is generally associated with worse symptoms and less successful treatment. Yet, limited information exists on the natural history of different urinary incontinence subtypes, which could help to better identify and treat patients prior to development of more intractable disease. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the onset of urinary incontinence subtypes, and transitions between subtypes over 8 years, using 2 large cohorts of middle-aged and older women with inciden

Family history and risk of breast cancer: nurses' health study.

Family history of cancer remains underused in general clinical practice. We assess age at diagnosis and the role of family history in risk of breast cancer. Prospective follow-up of nurses' health study participants from 1980 to 2006. Updated assessment of family history in mother and sister including age at diagnosis. We used youngest age at diagnosis for family member when classifying risk. We confirmed 4327 incident invasive breast cancers confirmed. Breast cancer incidence models fitted to women with and without family history to assess variation in the risk for established risk factors. C

A history of massage in nurse training school curricula (1860-1945).

INTRODUCTION: Guided by Florence Nightingale, massage nurse training instruction methods were duplicated in the U.S. nurse training curricula. In the 1880s to 1900s massage training and instruction was delivered by physicians, nurses, or masseurs for many disease conditions. In the 1930s to 1940s, influential nurse authors and educators began to recommend specialization in physiotherapy for nurses. Scientific and pharmacological solutions for symptoms of disease became popular, thus practicing basic nursing comfort measures using massage declined. PURPOSES: To trace roots of massage in the me

Natural history of low back pain. A longitudinal study in nurses.

STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal study. OBJECTIVES: To assess the natural history of low back pain. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Most episodes of low back pain resolve or improve within a few weeks, but chronic or recurrent symptoms are common. Previous studies of natural history have usually relied on people's long-term recall of symptoms, or they have been limited to patients seeking clinical care. METHODS: Nurses (1,165 women) completed a baseline questionnaire and up to eight follow-up questionnaires 3 months apart. Each questionnaire asked whether they had experienced low back pain in the pas

Alcohol-history taking by nurses and doctors--how accurate are they really?

The aim of this study was to look at how nurses and doctors record alcohol histories on the patients under their care and the frequency and appropriateness of the way they use an alcohol withdrawal scale in the acute hospital setting. To achieve these aims patient records were audited and compared at two points in time, in 1992 and 1994. Results of the study showed that nurses and doctors took alcohol histories from patients on approximately three-quarters of occasions and that this level of recording has not changed over time. The adequacy of alcohol-history taking has, however, increased for

[The history of nursing and disciplinary coherence: historiographical challenges facing a profession in transition].

Nurses rely daily on patients' histories through anamnesis, one of the foundational acts of nursing care, yet often maintain a more uncertain relationship with their own professional history. This article explores this paradox and examines the functions of nursing history in a context of professional transformation. Beyond its memorial dimension, nursing history emerges as a critical, pedagogical, and disciplinary resource that contributes to professional coherence, knowledge transmission, and the development of nursing science.

"Missing in Action" in Psychiatric Nursing History: The Role of Chief Nurse Adele S. Poston and Her Band of Nurses During World War I.

This is the first nursing journal article to introduce the pioneering work of American psychiatric nurse leader, Adele S. Poston. Poston supervised a team of nurses as they cared for soldiers serving with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I in France. Poston and her nurses worked in the first American specialized neuropsychiatric hospital in a war. The soldiers they treated primarily had functional nervous disorders described at that time as "shell shock" or "war neuroses." The traumatized officers and enlisted men were considered capable of being cured and returned to active
