Household work disability of Arab housewives with rheumatoid arthritis.

There have been few studies on the impact of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on household work, and none has been done in a setting where female unemployment is normative. The typical Israeli Arab woman is nearly always unemployed, poorly educated, has low financial resources, and is fully responsible for maintenance of the household work. In this study, we attempted to determine whether social-economic factors or medical evaluation best predicts household work disability. Arab housewives with RA that are followed up regularly with disease duration >6 months were recruited consecutively from three o

The crossroads of work and home: linkages between smoke-free policies at work and household environments.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use causes over eight million global deaths annually, with seven million directly attributed to tobacco use and 1.2 million to second hand smoke (SHS). Smoke-free environments are crucial to counter SHS. Although India banned smoking in public places in 2008, SHS exposure remains high. Studies have noted that limiting smoking in workplaces, restaurants, etc., helps to reduce overall smoking and reduce SHS exposure. Under this background, the study explores the linkages between smoke-free workplaces and living in smoke-free homes in India. METHODS: The two rounds of the GAT

Why Does Disaster Recovery Work Influence Mental Health?: Pathways through Physical Health and Household Income.

Disaster recovery work increases risk for mental health problems, yet the mechanisms underlying this association are unclear. We explored links from recovery work to post-traumatic stress (PTS), major depression (MD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms through physical health symptoms and household income in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. As part of the NIEHS GuLF STUDY, participants (N = 10,141) reported on cleanup work activities, spill-related physical health symptoms, and household income at baseline, and mental health symptoms an average of 14.69 weeks (SD

Engineering Apprenticeships: Youth Transitions, Industrial Capital and the Role of Working-Class Households.

Using biographical methods, the study explores the lives of 34 young people undertaking engineering apprenticeships in Teesside, Northeast England. It examines why working-class youth in a deindustrialised region might be attracted to engineering, how they might secure apprenticeship, and the invaluable role households play in orchestrating and sustaining these relations. To understand such youth transitions we develop the concept of 'industrial capital', deployed by adult male family members to leverage employment opportunities in working-class neighbourhoods. Where apprenticeship studies ten

An Analysis of the Trend of Fetal Mortality Rates among Working and Jobless Households in Japan, 1995-2019.

This study aimed to identify differences in the trends of artificial and spontaneous fetal mortality rates between working and jobless households depending on ages, periods, and birth cohorts in Japan. Vital Statistics data from 1995 to 2019 and age groups in 5-year increments from 15 to 19 years through 45 to 49 years were used. Bayesian age-period-cohort analysis was used to evaluate changes in each of the outcomes. As a result, the difference in maternal age-standardized rate of both the artificial and spontaneous fetal mortality rates between the two types of households decreased in the pe

Saying, Doing, Talking, Listening: A Mixed Methods Study of Fathers' Involvement in Childcare and Household Work Tasks and Responsibilities.

This article examines how methodological approaches shape understandings of domestic responsibilities. Using mixed methods data from Canadian dual-earner households, we compare fathers' individual survey responses with couple interview accounts about their childcare and housework involvement. Survey and interview data align when assessing tasks - discrete actions with defined boundaries - but diverge when evaluating responsibilities, which involve anticipating needs, managing care and organizing household life. These discrepancies also reflect how gendered and racialized expectations can influ

Who eats with family and how often? Household members and work styles influence frequency of family meals in urban Japan.

Family commensality, or meals eaten together with family members, is a key practice to understand the socio-cultural organization of eating and family lives. Yet empirical evidence is limited outside of western societies, which have different household structures, work styles, and socio-cultural constructions of the practice. This study examined frequencies of family commensality based on 242 surveys of Japanese adults aged between 20 and 85 in two metropolitan areas. Results showed that family commensality is less frequent not only among those living alone, but also among those living with on

Does the 'right to request' flexible work policy influence men's and women's uptake of flexible working and well-being: findings from the UK Household Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: The 'right to request' flexible working policy has been gradually extended and, by 2014, extended to cover all workers with at least 26 weeks of continuous employment. The impact of these policy changes is unclear. This research aims to assess the effects of the 2014 policy reform on the uptake of flexible working and its impact on health and well-being, focusing on gender differences. METHODS: Data were drawn from waves 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 of the UK Household Longitudinal Study (2010-2020). We employed a doubly robust difference-in-differences method to estimate the average treatme

Discriminant validity, responsiveness and reliability of the arthritis-specific Work Productivity Survey assessing workplace and household productivity in patients with psoriatic arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: The novel arthritis-specific Work Productivity Survey (WPS) was developed to estimate patient productivity limitations associated with arthritis within and outside the home, which is an unmet need in psoriatic arthritis (PsA). The WPS has been validated in rheumatoid arthritis. This report assesses the discriminant validity, responsiveness and reliability of the WPS in adult-onset PsA. METHODS: Psychometric properties were assessed using data from the RAPID-PsA trial (NCT01087788) investigating certolizumab pegol (CZP) efficacy and safety in PsA. WPS was completed at baseline an

The spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) via staff work and household networks in residential aged-care services in Victoria, Australia, May-October 2020.

OBJECTIVE: Morbidity and mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been significant among elderly residents of residential aged-care services (RACS). To prevent incursions of COVID-19 in RACS in Australia, visitors were banned and aged-care workers were encouraged to work at a single site. We conducted a review of case notes and a social network analysis to understand how workplace and social networks enabled the spread of severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) among RACS. DESIGN: Retrospective outbreak review. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Staff involved in COVI

Linked lives and work-family dynamics: gendered workload, family support, and mental well-being among urban Chinese dual-earner households.

In China, debates on achieving work-family balance have intensified with the rise of the dual-earner model. Balancing paid and unpaid work is stressful for dual-earner couples resulting in poor mental well-being outcomes for both partners. While prior mental well-being research mainly focused on individual associations, our study investigates associations of paid and unpaid workloads on spousal mental well-being within married dyads. Moreover, given that family support is an important resource in accordance with Chinese cultural and social norms, we investigate the mitigating role of family su

Dangerous mixture of household detergents in an old-style toilet: a case report with simulation experiments of the working environment and warning of potential hazard relevant to the general environment.

A housewife cleaned toilet porcelain connected directly to a sewage storage tank with a mixture of cleaning agents; sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions. She complained of insomnia on the night after cleaning and suffered from severe metabolic acidosis with extremely low blood pH, PCO2 and bicarbonate values. She recovered from the acidosis after bicarbonate transfusion, plasmapheresis and plasma exchange. Permanent blindness ensued, however, from the third day after the event. These clinical symptoms suggested that the toxic substances responsible were chloramine

"After reducing alcohol, things now work well at home": Perceived impacts of the Mlambe intervention on alcohol use, relationship dynamics, household economics, and HIV treatment adherence in Malawian couples.

Unhealthy alcohol use is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa and can worsen poverty, couple relationships, and HIV treatment outcomes. In response, we assessed participant experiences with Mlambe, a pilot study of an economic and relationship-strengthening intervention for couples living with unhealthy alcohol use and HIV. Exit interviews were conducted with a subset of 20 couples who participated in a pilot trial of Mlambe in Zomba, Malawi. A 10-month intervention consisted of financial literacy and couples counseling sessions and incentivized savings accounts. Eligible couples were married, ≥ 18

Discriminant validity, responsiveness and reliability of the arthritis-specific Work Productivity Survey assessing workplace and household productivity within and outside the home in patients with axial spondyloarthritis, including nonradiographic axial spondyloarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.

INTRODUCTION: The arthritis-specific Work Productivity Survey (WPS) was developed to evaluate productivity limitations associated with arthritis within and outside the home. There is an unmet need for an instrument assessing similar productivity limitations in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), including nonradiographic axSpA and ankylosing spondylitis. Following its validation in rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, we aimed to assess psychometric properties of WPS in adult-onset active axSpA in this analysis.
