We retrospectively studied biopsy specimens obtained from 16 patients who had carcinoma of the tonsil or nasopharynx. Polymerase chain reaction testing detected the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in 13 samples (81.3%)--six tonsillar and seven nasopharyngeal. Eleven of the 13 positive samples (84.6%) contained HPV subtype 31. We believe that this is the first report of the presence of HPV subtype 31 in these carcinomas. In addition to the significant association between tonsillar and nasopharyngeal cancer and HPV, our analysis of descriptive variables confirmed the association between t

Persistent infections caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are important, for the development of cervical lesions, but environmental and genetic factors are also related in the process of carcinogenesis. Among the genetic factors, the genetic variants of HR-HPV appear to be related to the risk of persistent infections. Therefore, the present study investigates variants of HPV31 E5 oncogene in cervical scraping samples from Brazilian women to assess their functional and structural effects, in order to identify possible repercussions of these variants on the infectious and carcinoge

The L1 gene encodes for the major capsid protein of human papillomaviruses (HPV). There is limited information on the polymorphism of L1 for types related to HPV-16. This report explores the polymorphism of L1 in phylogenetically related types 31, 33, and 35 compared to HPV-16. Genital specimens collected from 732 HIV-seropositive and 323 HIV-seronegative women were screened for HPV DNA with consensus L1 PCR. Cervical samples positive for HPV-16 (n = 74), HPV-31 (n = 78), HPV-33 (n = 37), and HPV-35 (n = 58) were further characterized by PCR-sequencing of the complete L1 gene. The number of nu

Human papillomavirus type 31 (HPV31) is detected less frequently in cervical cancer than two major causative types, HPV16 and HPV18. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of HPV31 genome sequences in cervical lesions collected from Japanese women. Of 52 HPV31-positive cervical specimens analyzed by deep sequencing, 43 samples yielded complete genome sequences of around 7900 base pairs and 9 samples yielded partially deleted genome sequences. Phylogenetic analysis showed that HPV31 variant distribution was lineage A in 19 samples (36.5%), lineage B in 28 samples (53.8%), and lineage C in 5 s

206 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) were examined at the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of the University of Tübingen for genital infections with human papilloma viruses (HPV) using DNA-hybridisation. 1. The HPV-type-groups 31/33/35 and 16/18 occurred with approx. the same frequency. 2. Significantly more potentially reversible changes (CIN I.-II.) were associated with HPV types 31, 33 and 35 than with HPV-types 16 and 18, which were found more often in CIN III. (P less than 0.02). 3. In 37.5% of the infections established by DNA-hybridisation, the morphologica

About one-third of human papillomavirus (HPV) types infect the anogenital tract. High-risk genital HPV types (such as HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, and 35) are linked causally to the development of cervical cancer. The long control region (LCR) of the HPV genome regulates the replication and transcription of the viral genome. In this study, the functional significance of nucleotide sequence variation within the LCR of HPV 31 was investigated. The LCR was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) from 41 HPV 31 positive cervical samples of Hungarian women. A phylogenetic tree constructed from the nucl

Knowing the regional lineages/sublineages of human papillomavirus 31 (HPV 31) and 45 would be of great importance for further evolutionary, epidemiological, and biological analysis. In this regard, to characterize more common lineages and sublineages of HPV 31 and 45, the sequence variations of E6 gene were investigated in normal, premalignant, and malignant samples collected from the cervix in Iran. In total, 54 HPV 31- and 24 HPV 45-positive samples were analyzed by hemi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nested-PCR, respectively. All PCR products were subjected to direct sequencing

Papillomaviruses are species-specific and epitheliotropic DNA viruses that cause tumors in their natural hosts. Certain infections with genital human papillomavirus (HPV) types are causally related to cervical cancer development. Most papillomaviruses are thought to infect cells via a clathrin-dependent pathway, yet no studies have determined the entry route in permissive host epithelial cells. Employing fluorescently labeled and native virions, we tested the effects of dominant-negative and biochemical inhibitors of cellular endocytosis pathways. Infections of human keratinocytes, a natural h

Although the lineages of human papillomavirus type 31 (HPV31) variants are recognized, their clinical relevance is unknown. The purpose of our study was to examine risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia Grades 2-3 (CIN2/3) by HPV31 variants. Study subjects were women who participated in the atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion Triage Study and who had HPV31 infections detected at one or more visits. They were followed semi-annually over 2 years for detection of HPV DNA and cervical lesion. HPV31 isolates were characterized by DN

Human papillomavirus (HPV) type 31 (HPV31) is closely related to the most carcinogenic type, HPV16, but only accounts for 4% of cervical cancer cases worldwide. Viral genetic and epigenetic variations have been associated with carcinogenesis for other high-risk HPV types, but little is known about HPV31. We sequenced 2093 HPV31 viral whole genomes from two large studies, one from the U.S. and one international. In addition, we investigated CpG methylation in a subset of 175 samples. We evaluated the association of HPV31 lineages/sublineages, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and viral met

The association between human papillomavirus 31 (HPV31) DNA loads and the risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades 2 and 3 (CIN2-3) was evaluated among women enrolled in the atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) triage study (ALTS), who were monitored semiannually over 2 years and who had HPV31 infections detected at ≥1 visit. HPV31 DNA loads in the first HPV31-positive samples and in a random set of the last positive samples from women with ≥2 HPV31-positive visits were measured by a real-time PCR assay. CIN2

OBJECTIVE: The study's objective was to estimate human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype-specific seroprevalence to determine population HPV exposure and inform vaccine policy.
METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional prevalence survey of 878 women of Pueblorrico, a rural town of Colombia. A standardized questionnaire was used to obtain information on demographic characteristics, sexual and reproductive history, and smoking habits. Seropositivity to HPV-16, -18, -31, and -58 was determined by virus-like particles in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
RESULTS: Overall seropositivity to any HPV

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the endometrium (ESCC) is extremely rare. There has been no report of human papillomavirus (HPV) detected in ESCC. A 64-year-old Japanese female underwent total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and dissection of the pelvic, para-aortic, and bilateral inguinal lymph nodes. The tumor was confined to the endometrium, without invasion of myometrium or cervix. The endometrium was seen to be replaced by moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, without any adenocarcinomatous element. Polymerase chain reaction amplification produced

OBJECTIVE: Adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) is an uncommon neoplasm of the uterine cervix. ABC can be accompanied by carcinoma in situ or invasive carcinoma. Most cases are discovered accidentally during radical hysterectomy. ABC is associated with a high risk of human papillomavirus infection (HPV), most often HPV 16 infection.
CASE REPORT: We present a rare case of an 86-year-old Taiwanese married woman who suffered from bloody vaginal discharge and occasional lower abdominal pain and received cervical biopsy. The pathological report revealed squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the uterine cervix

The mechanisms that regulate papillomavirus gene expression include DNA methylation. The transcription of papillomavirus oncogenes E6 and E7 is controlled by certain regulatory elements in the LCR, which include binding sites for the E2 protein, a viral regulator of oncogene expression. In HPV-31-infected exfoliated cervical cells, the CpG methylation of the entire LCR was determined by next-generation sequencing after bisulfite modification. Six of the 22 cases had methylated CpG sites in the HPV-31 LCR, including position 7479 and/or 7485, at the promoter distal E2 binding site, thus suggest

To investigate the distribution of Human papillomavirus (HPV)-31 A, B and C variants as well as the common amino acid polymorphisms in Chinese women, all 14 HPV-31 positive cervical exfoliated cell specimens identified from a descriptive study including ∼2700 women from Northern China were analyzed. HPV-31 positive specimens were identified by Mass Spectrometry and the fragments of partial Long Control Region, E6 and E7 were amplified and directly sequenced or cloned into vector and then sequenced to confirm the variant information. HPV-31 prevalence in Northern Chinese female population was 0

OBJECTIVE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines can potentially control cervical cancer and help to reduce other HPV-related cancers. We aimed to estimate the relative contribution (RC) of the nine types (HPVs 16/18/31/33/45/52/58/6/11) included in the recently approved 9-valent HPV vaccine in female anogenital cancers and precancerous lesions (cervix, vulva, vagina and anus).
METHODS: Estimations were based on an international study designed and coordinated at the Catalan Institute of Oncology (Barcelona-Spain), including information on 10,575 invasive cervical cancer (ICC), 1709 vulvar, 408

In our previous study of the etiologic role of oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types other than HPV16 and 18, we observed a significantly higher risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia Grades 2-3 (CIN2/3) associated with certain lineages of HPV types 31/33/45/56/58 [called high-risk (HR) variants] compared with non-HR variants. This study was to examine whether these intra-type variants differ in persistence of the infection and persistence-associated risk of CIN2/3. Study subjects were women who had any of HPV types 31/33/45/56/58 newly detected during a 2-year follow-up with 6-month

BACKGROUND: Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) can lead to cervical intraepithelial lesion and cervical cancer. Sexual behavior and smoking have been identified as risk factors for HPV infection. However, it is unclear which factors account for the persistence of HPV infection and for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). Therefore, we conducted a study to identify epidemiological risk factors for the following: (1) the presence of HPV among women without a recent diagnosis of HSIL and (2) HSIL.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants aged 20 to 31 yea
