Human IgG consists of two identical heavy (H) chains and two identical light (L) chains joined by interchain disulfide bridges. Heterogeneity in the amino acid sequences of the H and L polypeptides results in at least three types of IgG variants at the structural and genetic levels. The four isotypic forms are IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4, which share extensive homologies in the primary structure of their H chains. As a result, the subclasses cross-react antigenically, but they can be differentiated on the basis of subtle architectural dissimilarities. The biological and effector properties of t

IgG subclasses differ from one another both immunochemically and functionally. An isolated absence of a certain specific subclass may or may not be associated with disease. However, an absence of serum IgG4 as measured by a sensitive radioimmunoassay is usually, if not always, associated with severe recurrent pyogenic infections, usually of the respiratory tract. IgG2 and IgG4 deficiencies tends to occur together, often in association with deficiencies of immunoglobulin A (IgA) and/or immunoglobulin E (IgE). The properties of IgG1 are similar to those of IgG3 and those of IgG2 appear to resemb

Persistent low serum levels of one or several immunoglobulin G (IgG) subclasses can be found in a high proportion of adult patients with increased susceptibility to infections. It is hard to envision that the low subclass level in itself is responsible for this susceptibility because healthy blood donors have been described who are completely devoid of certain subclasses in serum. This apparent discrepancy may be partly explained by the observation that most subclass-deficient patients have underlying aberrations in T-cell and B-cell interaction and function that may impair their capacity to c

Immunoglobulins are key effector molecules in humoral immunity and play fundamental roles in human health and disease through their complex structure-function relationships. Dysregulation of immunoglobulin production or function underlies numerous conditions, including inflammatory disorders, autoimmune diseases, and metabolic diseases. In the context of cancer, immunoglobulin G (IgG) is frequently enriched within tumor tissue and displays aberrant glycosylation, where it correlates with cancer progression, and its functional impact within the tumor microenvironment is drawing growing interest

The metabolism of immunoglobulin classes has been closely examined in several animal species. Although the horse has received much attention in experimental and applied immunology there seems to be little information available on immunoglobulin kinetics in this species. The present report describes the metabolism of equine IgG in 4 healthy, normoimmunoglobulinaemic horses, in 1 horse with hyperimmunoglobulinaemia and in 1 horse with relatively low immunoglobulin levels.

In this study serum immunoglobulins (Ig) and IgG subclasses were measured in 42 patients (ranging 9 month-6 year) with recurrent wheezing and in 37 healthy children determined the relationship between serum Igs and recurrent wheezing. Patients were divided into two groups according to the age [9 month-2 year (n: 15), and 2-6 year (n: 27)]. In the patients placed in 9-24 month age group, serum IgG4 level was found to be lower than controls (p < 0.05). But there was not a significant difference in mean serum concentrations of total IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, IgG1, IgG2 and IgG3 subclasses between the g

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) 4‑related diseases are fibrosing inflammatory systemic diseases that can affect almost every organ system. Typical disease manifestations include autoimmune pancreatitis, lymphadenopathy, retroperitoneal fibrosis, inflammatory orbitopathy and involvement of the salivary and lacrimal glands. Organ involvements can occur either isolated or in combination with other disease manifestations. Before diagnosing IgG4-related diseases, malignancies and other inflammatory diseases have to be excluded. The diagnosis requires a combination of laboratory findings, histological and ra

The paper reviews results reached so far about avidity of immunoglobulins G in viral, parasitic and bacterial infectious diseases. The general introductory part begins with explanation of immunologic basis in maturation of avidity of immunoglobulins G and proceeds up to a survey of methods used for the determination of avidity. It also deals with the modes of evaluation in these methods and comments on their advantages and disadvantages. The part devoted to individual infectious diseases brings the most important information about avidity of immunoglobulins G in specific infections, especially

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is caused by the replacement of normal retroperitoneal tissue with fibrosis. The majority of the cases are idiopathic, but some secondary causes include malignancy, infection, drugs, and radiotherapy. Immunoglobulin G-4 (IgG-4) related disease is a relatively newer disease and one of the rarer causes of retroperitoneal fibrosis. It usually involves the pancreas, lungs, kidneys, aorta lacrimal and salivary glands, or extrapancreatic bile duct. Elevated serum IgG-4 is the biomarker of the disease and its levels correlate with disease activity. High-dose glucocorticoid is

OBJECTIVE & AIM: The coronavirus disease, so far (COVID-19) has brought about millions of infections and fatalities throughout the world. Our aim was to determine the correlation between rubella IGG titers with the severity COVID-19. MATERIALS & METHODS: This study was conducted among COVID-19 confirmed patients over 18 years of age. The disease severity levels were categorized by WHO interim guidance. The rubella-specific IgG antibody-titer spectrum was measured (within first 48 h of hospitalization) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
RESULT: In a study of 46 inpatients with vary

OBJECTIVE: Immunoglobulin G (IgG) autoantibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are considered pathogenic, whereas immunoglobulin M (IgM) autoantibodies may have protective effects. The aim of this study was to identify whether IgG/IgM autoantibody ratios differ between patients with incomplete systemic lupus erythematosus (iSLE), patients with SLE, and healthy controls (HCs), and whether IgG/IgM autoantibody ratios relate to progression from iSLE to SLE.
METHOD: This prospective cohort study included 34 iSLE patients, 41 SLE patients, and 11 HCs. IgG and IgM anti-dsDNA, anti-Ro52, and

A 76-year-old man with interstitial lung disease was admitted to our institution after developing persistent dyspnea upon effort. He also had a relapse of bullous eruptions on the skin of the trunk and extremities, previously diagnosed as vesicular pemphigoid. Direct immunofluorescence of a skin biopsy specimen using fluorescence microscopy showed the linear deposition of immunglobulin A (IgA), IgG and C3 along the basement membrane. These findings indicated a definitive diagnosis of linear IgA/IgG bullous dermatosis. Chest computed tomography, bronchoalveolar lavage and transbronchial lung bi

A nine-year-old golden retriever was referred for evaluation of chronic anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea. Low body weight, mucous membrane pallor, and palpably enlarged liver and spleen were detected by physical examination. Anemia, hyperglobulinemia, and concurrent trichuriasis and coccidiosis were identified upon initial diagnostic evaluation. Punctate vertebral lysis was apparent radiographically. Atypical plasma cell proliferation was found in the bone marrow, liver, and spleen. An immunoglobulin A and immunoglobulin G biclonal gammopathy was demonstrated by serum protein electrophoresis a

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NHb) results from increased total serum bilirubin and is a common reason for admission and readmission amongst newborn infants born in North America. The use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy for treating NHb has been widely debated, and the current incidence of NHb and its therapies remain unknown.
METHODS: Using national and provincial databases, a population-based retrospective cohort study of infants born in Ontario from April 2014 to March 2018 was conducted.
RESULTS: Of the 533,084 infants born in Ontario at ≥35 weeks gestation, 29,75

OBJECTIVE: The occurrence of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is common in chronic immune mediated disorders. This increased monoclonal antibody production could result from chronic stimulation of lymphocytes, with the immunoglobulin G (IgG) subtype accounting for the majority of cases in psoriatic arthritis (PsA). We aimed to identify IgG subclass profiles in patients with PsA and to determine association with specific disease characteristics.
METHODS: Serum samples from 221 patients with PsA from a single cohort were analyzed for their serum IgG subclass levels. All

Immunoglobulin G antibodies are the most frequent type of red blood cell isoantibodies. They possess the ability to traverse the placenta and may cause hemolytic disease in newborn infants. Of the four subclasses, IgG1 and IgG3 are effective at binding erythrocytes to monocyte-macrophages and therefore are potentially destructive to erythrocytes. IgG2 and IgG4 are unable to react effectively with receptor sites on phagocytic cells and so are totally inactive relative to hemolysis. IgG subclasses were identified in 22 consecutive isoimmunized antepartum patients. Fifteen patients were subsequen
