Complications of ridge reconstruction can delay healing or even cause total failure of the procedure, making implant placement impossible. Most intraoperative complications, such as insufficient material for a graft or inadequate range of a soft tissue flap, are the result of poor treatment planning or execution. Postoperative infection is usually associated with onlay, veneer, and J grafts and dehiscence. Resorption of the graft can range from minor (exposure of the heads of the fixation screws) to total. Retraction of a soft tissue flap is most likely where the vestibule is shallow or the mu

Panoramic radiographs from 1026 patients were examined for the presence of completely impacted teeth. The prevalence of completely impacted teeth in the edentulous jaw was lower than that in the dentate jaw in both the upper and lower jaws. The prevalence of completely impacted third molars in the edentulous jaw was also lower than that in the dentate jaw. However, there was no difference in the prevalence of completely impacted canine teeth and completely impacted anterior maxillary supernumerary teeth (mesiodens) in the edentulous jaw. These findings may indicate that completely impacted can

The jaws of 368 edentulous patients are evaluated radiographically and the findings presented. Patients were selected at random from those attending the Oral Diagnostic Clinic of the Dental School of the University of Athens. Pathological findings consisting of residual roots, impacted teeth, radiopaque and radiolucent areas, foreign bodies, and soft tissue calcification were found in 37.0 percent of the patients examined. These conditions were not identifiable from the history or the clinical examination of the patients; 47 patients had been denture wearers for a period of 1 to 5 years. Analy

An implant-supported overdenture is a good alternative treatment to a conventional denture for patients with complaints about the retention and stability of their removable complete denture. These complaints more often have to do with the mandibular than the maxillary denture. Implant-supported overdentures offer better results in the mandible than in the maxilla. In cases of insujficient bone volume in the maxilla for inserting implants, maxillary sinus floor elevation using an autogenous bone graft from the oral cavity or the iliac crest may be carried out. Treatment of the edentulous maxill

The atrophic and edentulous jaw can pose a number of challenges for the implant clinician. In simple terms, the amount of bone that remains is insufficient for the conventional placement of a dental implant. A variety of treatment strategies can be employed to enable implants to be placed despite the paucity of bone stock in either the mandible or the maxilla. Conceptually these strategies follow one of two pathways: either augmentation of the bone, or the novel utilization of the remaining bone. This article will discuss patient assessment, treatment planning, and the range of contemporary op

Establishment of the best possible relationship between upper and lower teeth is very important when treating jaw fractures and orthognathic deformities in partially edentulous patients. Many surgeons use arch bars and acrylic splints for intermaxillary fixation (IMF) to obtain the best occlusal relationships after the operation. In patients with sufficient teeth, IMF is not so difficult to realize. However, in partially edentulous patients, the available teeth may not be sufficient to apply arch bars or splints. This paper describes a system for IMF of a partially edentulous jaw. Screws made

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if magnetic- attached overdenture supported by microimplants of 2.5 mm in diameter was able to function properly.
METHODS: Fourteen microimplants were placed in 4 patients. Implants were exposed 3 months later and magnetic abutments were connected directly. X-ray was taken during the 3 year follow-up to examine marginal bone level. Peri-implant soft tissue was also checked. Denture retention, chewing stability and overall satisfaction with the microimplants retained overdenture were evaluated.
RESULTS: All of the 14 microimplants achieved initial primary stability w

Yakebot, the first autonomous robotic dental implant system, provides a 1-stop solution for implant design, robot operation, real-time navigation, and precision analysis. This report describes the composition, principles, and implant operation procedures of the Yakebot dental implant robotic system in a patient for whom the robotic workflow procedure was used to place implants in the edentulous maxilla. The results showed that this workflow was more precise and predictable than traditional methods.

The aim of the present study was to assess the results after transplantation of 85 immature third molars. Recipient site conditions varied and different surgical techniques were used. The long-term results after preparation of a new alveolus, splitting osteotomy of the alveolar process or use of free bone autografts were compared with the results after transplantation into a fresh extraction site (control group). Transplantations into prepared sockets showed equal results to the control group (94% respectively). Transplantations in connection with free bone autografts (84%) or after splitting

OBJECTIVE: The aim of present study was to investigate the accuracy of two registration methods, best fit alignment and manual multi-point alignment followed by global registration, used in edentulous jaw impressions.
METHODS: Traditional complete denture impressions were taken via two methods: open-mouth and closed-mouth methods. The edentulous impression models, including maxilla:14 pairs and mandible:12 pairs, were scanned in the model scanner and saved in STL format. In the reverse engineering software Geomagic Control 2014, two registration methods, namely, best fit alignment and manual

BACKGROUND: Edentulism conducts to a recognized impairment of oral function with both aesthetic and psychological changes. These patients suffer from a multiplicity of problems with their dentures, such as insufficient stability, retention and pain during mastication. The rehabilitation of a part edentulous patient can be established using a wide range of prosthetic treatment options. The overdenture treatment uses a removable total denture that overlies retained teeth, tooth roots, or dental implants. In the literature it was shown that patients with removable overdentures supported and retai

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of digital models obtained from intraoral scanning of edentulous maxilla and mandible models with and without resin markers. Methods: A pair of standard edentulous models were scanned using a laboratory scanner and saved as reference models. The edentulous models were fixed onto a phantom head and scanned with an intraoral scanner (IOS) five times each. Six resin markers were attached on the maxilla model and two on the mandible model, and another five intraoral scans were taken of each model. The scanning time and number of images were recorded. The digital

OBJECTIVE: To develop a prototype design of a universal auxiliary geometric device (AGD) for intraoral scanning of edentulous jaws with dental implants, based on the analysis of existing solutions, and to integrate it into a CAD/CAM workflow.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mandibular stone reference model with four multi-unit abutment analogs in positions 3.5, 3.2, 4.2, and 4.5 was used. On the basis of a literature review, design requirements for the AGD were formulated and three variants of scan bodies with a unified intermediate part were modelled. Intraoral scanning was performed with a 3Shape

The use of dynamic navigation technology in edentulous jaw implant restoration can solve many problems associated with traditional edentulous jaw implant restoration. The benefits of dynamic navigation include fine positioning guidance, restoration-guided surgery, good aesthetic results, and the possibility of simultaneous conceptual design and real-time implant guidance, as well as the transition from "blind" to "direct" vision during the implantation. It can guide clinicians and adjust the plan in real time, improve the efficiency of communication between the clinician, technician, and patie

PURPOSE: Within the specialty of prosthodontics, oral impressions are ubiquitous tools utilized to transfer intraoral characteristics such as teeth, implants, and soft tissue into a physical state (stone cast) that is processable in a laboratory setting for the fabrication of dental restorations. In recent years, optical impression systems have become ubiquitous in clinical practice replacing the conventional method of impression making. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of computerized optical impression making of edentulous jaws in an in vivo setti
