Reading attainment and juvenile delinquency.

Structural equation modelling was used with data from a longitudinal study of child development (N = 698) to examine relationships between early reading attainment and antisocial behaviour at ages 7 and 9 years and subsequent reading and delinquent behaviour in adolescence. While reading, analysed as a continuous variable, did not directly influence later delinquency, antisocial behaviour during the early school years was strongly predictive of delinquency at age 15 years, particularly for boys, and had a detrimental effect on reading. These findings were independent of social disadvantage, an

Early exposure to lead and juvenile delinquency.

Cross-sectional studies have reported an association between lead (Pb) levels in bone and delinquent behavior in later childhood and adolescence. This is the first prospective longitudinal study of Pb and child development to address this question with comprehensive assessments of toxicant exposure and other developmental cofactors. A prospective longitudinal birth cohort of 195 urban, inner-city adolescents recruited between 1979 and 1985 was examined. Relationships between prenatal and postnatal exposure to Pb (serial blood Pb determinations) and antisocial and delinquent behaviors (self- an

The family relations of female juvenile delinquents.

This study evaluated the assumption that the family relations of female delinquents are more dysfunctional than those of male delinquents. In a 2 X 2 (gender by delinquency status) design, 32 intact families were matched on demographic variables, and the male and female delinquents were matched on arrest data. Mothers, fathers, and adolescents were administered a self-report personality inventory and were observed during a family interaction task. Consistent with the extant literature, families of delinquents had low rates of facilitative information exchange and delinquent adolescents were mo

Perception of juvenile delinquents of group therapy approaches.

The present study focuses on juvenile delinquents' perception of two procedures used in group therapy. Eleven juvenile delinquents, participants of a probation program, were asked to share their experience with group therapy. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of the interviews with the participants, the specifics of verbal and action procedures were examined. Verbal procedures offer clients a greater opportunity for emotional experience and subsequent cognitive processing of the experience leading to personal growth. The action procedures are, in contrast, a way of deepening the c

Juvenile delinquents revisited. Adult criminal activity.

We examined the subsequent criminal activities of delinquent boys classified as having either socialized conduct disorder, undersocialized conduct disorder, aggressive type, or undersocialized conduct disorder, unaggressive type. A follow-up study of more than ten years revealed profound differences in the likelihood of criminal convictions or incarcerations between socialized and undersocialized delinquents. The socialized delinquents have less chance of being either convicted of a crime or being imprisoned. This difference supports the previous studies that demonstrated that these classifica

Posttraumatic stress disorder in incarcerated juvenile delinquents.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in severely delinquent subjects and to measure associated personality characteristics. METHOD: Eighty-five incarcerated boys (mean age 16.6, SD = 1.2) with mostly violent offenses were studied. The sample was representative of the California Youth Authority population. They received a standard psychiatric screen, a semistructured interview for PTSD, and self-report questionnaires measuring personality traits and defenses. A nonclinical sex- and age-matched group was used for comparing psychometrics. RESULTS: Subjects

Specific reading retardation, hyperactive child syndrome, and juvenile delinquency.

The purpose of the study was to ascertain the extent to which a specific reading retardation leads to criminal development in adolescent and to what factors such development is due in these cases. For this purpose, 224 adolescents with a specific reading retardation were investigated. A relatively large number of these (12.1%) were prone to criminality between the ages of 15 and 20 years, whereas the severity of the specific reading retardation did not seem to contribute to this propensity. Symptoms of hyperactivity, on the other hand, seemed to contribute to criminal behaviour.

From punishment to education--juvenile delinquency in Romanian criminal law.

For centuries children were considered "mini-adults". Together with expressing the need to educate children and putting a stop to their integration in the work field from the earliest years the 19th century also displayed a new image of the child, which clearly separates him from the adults. In this paper the authors analyze the Romanian legislation addressing juvenile delinquency in criminal temporal evolution. On the one hand the minority age limits are sought and modulation of legislative provisions according to these, and on the other hand, types of penalties for minors are discussed. The

Brain functional changes in juvenile delinquents: a preliminary meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile delinquency is a serious social issue that poses significant challenges to public safety and mental health systems. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying delinquent behaviour in juveniles remain unclear. In this meta-analysis, we aimed to investigate the functional brain characteristics during resting-state and task-based conditions in juvenile offenders. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science and MEDLINE, focusing on whole-brain resting-state and task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies ex

Interrelatedness of Family and Parenting Risk Factors for Juvenile Delinquency: A Network Study in U.S. and Dutch Juveniles.

Family interventions that address a diversity of family and parenting factors are often used to prevent juvenile delinquency, but are effective to only a limited extent. This study applied a network approach to risk factors for juvenile delinquency and examined the interrelatedness of specifically family and parenting risk factors in a U.S. and separate Dutch sample of juveniles and their family members. Differences in interrelatedness between these samples were examined as well. Secondary analyses were conducted on data collected in the United States with the Washington State Juvenile Court A

Evaluation of sociodemographic, clinical and forensic medical characteristics of juvenile delinquents in Turkey.

It is accepted all over the world that children whose biological, psychological, cognitive, moral and social development processes are ongoing and whose value judgments are not sufficiently developed should not be punished or that punishment reductions should be applied. This study retrospectively analyzed the variables in a Turkish sample of 315 cases in which the criminal responsibility of children (83.5% boys and 16.5% girls) was determined using forensic psychiatric evaluation. The most common types of offense were theft (33.7%) and injury (31.1%). It was determined that the children invol

Association of perinatal events, epilepsy, and central nervous system trauma with juvenile delinquency.

The association of perinatal events, childhood epilepsy, and central nervous system trauma with juvenile delinquency was studied prospectively in a geographically defined population of 5966 males in northern Finland. Those who had obtained a criminal record up to the age of 22 years, totalling 355, or 6.0%, were defined as delinquents. The incidence of delinquency was not increased in males with a birth weight less than 2500 g or greater than 4000 g, preterm births < 37 weeks' gestation, or those with perinatal brain damage or having epileptic seizures before 14 years of age. The incidence was

Exploring Moderation Dynamics: Callous-Unemotional Traits, Parental Practices and Conduct Problems in Juvenile Delinquency.

INTRODUCTION: Callous-unemotional (CU) traits, parental practices and conduct problems (CP) have been consistently identified across numerous studies as significant predictors of the severity and persistence of juvenile delinquency. AIMS: This study seeks to investigate the moderation dynamics underlying the relationships between these variables among Arab incarcerated youth. Specifically, the study aims to (1) explore whether parental practices moderate the relationship between CU traits and CP among incarcerated youth in Jordan and (2) examine the bidirectional moderating influence of CU tr
