Progressing, not regressing: A possible solution to the problem of regression to the mean in unconscious processing studies.

How convincing is current evidence for unconscious processing? Recently, a major criticism suggested that some, if not much, of this evidence might be explained by a mere statistical phenomenon: regression to the mean (RttM). Excluding participants based on an awareness assessment is a common practice in studies of unconscious processing, and this post hoc data selection might lead to false effects that are driven by RttM for aware participants wrongfully classified as unaware. Here, we examined this criticism using both simulations and data from 12 studies probing unconscious processing (35 e

Effects of domain-specific knowledge on memory for serial order.

Knowledge concerning domain-specific regularities in sequential structure has long been known to affect recall for serial order. However, very little work has been done toward specifying the exact role such knowledge plays. The present article proposes a theory of serial recall in structured domains, based on Bayesian decision theory and a set of representational assumptions proceeding from recent computational and neurophysiologic research. The theory suggests that the accuracy with which a target sequence will be recalled is influenced by two interacting factors: (1) the 'goodness' of the se

Effect of Coach Feedback and Awareness of Head Impact Exposure on Practice Structure in Youth Football.

With the concern of concussion risk and repetitive head impacts in youth football, organizations have adopted rules that limit contact during practice. However, rule changes are not ubiquitous among organizations and are challenging to monitor and enforce. Ultimately, football practice activities are determined by coaches, but it is unknown whether providing objective data to coaches relating activities to their athletes' head impact exposure (HIE) would alter practice structure or help reduce HIE. This study evaluated the effect of coach awareness of HIE on practice structure over time. Head

Failure to construct and transfer correct representations across probability problems.

Previous studies carried out on "purely random" situations (with dice or poker chips) show the difficulties encountered by people in such situations, however simple they may be. In fact, in this type of situation, prior knowledge guides spontaneous representations, and the "errors" observed could be explained by the activation of "implicit models" which form the basis of erroneous representations. 42 statistically naïve undergraduates were given several variants of a probability problem on which errors are common. In a learning phase, subjects were given four problems involving geometric figur

Effects of visual feedback on manipulation performance and patient ratings.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the explicit targeted outcome (a criterion standard) and visual feedback on the immediate change in and the short-term retention of performance by novice operators for a high-velocity, low-amplitude procedure under realistic conditions. METHODS: This study used a single-blind randomized experimental design. Forty healthy male (n = 26) and female (n = 14) chiropractic student volunteers with no formal training in spinal manipulative therapy participated. Biomechanical parameters of an L4 mammillary push spinal manipulation procedure performed by novice operators

Crossmodal interactions: lessons from synesthesia.

Synesthesia is a condition in which stimulation in one modality also gives rise to a perceptual experience in a second modality. In two recent studies we found that the condition is more common than previously reported; up to 5% of the population may experience at least one type of synesthesia. Although the condition has been traditionally viewed as an anomaly (e.g., breakdown in modularity), it seems that at least some of the mechanisms underlying synesthesia do reflect universal crossmodal mechanisms. We review here a number of examples of crossmodal correspondences found in both synesthetes

Effects of reducing frequency of intrinsic knowledge of results on the learning of a motor skill.

The guidance hypothesis suggests too much knowledge of results during skill acquisition can be detrimental to long-term performance. Possibly, the learner becomes dependent on augmented KR and is unable to use intrinsic feedback. This study examined this hypothesis with three groups performing a golf putting task. One group received continuous KR about ball path and final location; the other groups were deprived of specific KR on 50% or 100% of the acquisition trials. As expected, the continuous KR group performed better during acquisition, but the KR-deprived groups performed better on delaye

Psychological impact of genetic counselling and testing in women previously diagnosed with breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: The recent discovery of susceptibility genes relating to breast cancer, BRCA1 and BRCA2, now allows women with breast cancer and a family history of breast/ovarian cancer to undergo genetic testing to identify a causative germ-line mutation. The present study assessed the psychological status over time of women affected by breast cancer requesting genetic testing (cases; n = 32) compared with matched controls (n = 28). METHODS: Subjects were recruited through two Sydney-based hospitals. Data were collected via questionnaire and telephone interview at baseline, and 2 weeks and 3-6

Women's perceptions of screening mammography.

A random sample of women in Sydney were interviewed by telephone to determine their knowledge about and attitudes to mammography. A response rate of 56 per cent (628 women) was obtained. While the majority of women had had some experience with breast cancer, knowledge about which age groups were most at risk and treatment alternatives was limited. Only about half of the sample had heard about screening mammography before the survey. However, when a simple explanation was given, 79 per cent expressed a favourable attitude toward it. Only 22 per cent of women thought of themselves as being perso

Human nicotine conditioning requires explicit contingency knowledge: is addictive behaviour cognitively mediated?

RATIONALE: Two seemingly contrary theories describe the learning mechanisms that mediate human addictive behaviour. According to the classical incentive theories of addiction, addictive behaviour is motivated by a Pavlovian conditioned appetitive emotional response elicited by drug-paired stimuli. Expectancy theory, on the other hand, argues that addictive behaviour is mediated by an expectancy of the drug imparted by cognitive knowledge of the Pavlovian (predictive) contingency between stimuli (S+) and the drug and of the instrumental (causal) contingency between instrumental behaviour and th

Feedback based simulator training reduces superfluous forces exerted by novice residents practicing knot tying for vessel ligation.

BACKGROUND: Technological advances have led to the development of state-of-the-art simulators for training surgeons; few train basic surgical skills, such as vessel ligation. METHODS: A novel low-cost bench-top simulator with auditory and visual feedback that measures forces exerted during knot tying was tested on 14 surgical residents. Pre- and post-training values for total force exerted during knot tying, maximum pulling and pushing forces and completion time were compared. RESULTS: Mean time to reach proficiency during training was 11:26 min, with a mean of 15 consecutive knots. Mean tot

Is clinical virtual reality ready for primetime?

OBJECTIVE: Since the mid-1990s, a significant scientific literature has evolved regarding the outcomes from the use of what we now refer to as clinical virtual reality (VR). This use of VR simulation technology has produced encouraging results when applied to address cognitive, psychological, motor, and functional impairments across a wide range of clinical health conditions. This article addresses the question, "Is clinical VR ready for primetime?" METHOD: After a brief description of the various forms of VR technology, we discuss the trajectory of clinical VR over the last 20 years and summ

Improvement of arm movement patterns and endpoint control depends on type of feedback during practice in stroke survivors.

BACKGROUND: A major challenge in stroke rehabilitation is restoration of arm motor function. Therapy-induced improvements in arm function may occur via restoration of premorbid movement patterns (recovery) or development of compensatory movement strategies. However, it is unclear whether the learning benefits of practice might be enhanced by incorporating different forms of feedback, focusing on movement outcomes or on specific arm movement patterns. OBJECTIVE: To determine if manipulation of attentional focus by providing either knowledge of results (KR) feedback, focusing on movement outcom

Altering the visuomotor gain. Evidence that motor plans deal with vector quantities.

Two experiments investigated the effects of providing nonveridical knowledge of the results (KR) in a visuomanual task in which participants pointed to briefly (200 ms) presented targets without seeing their hand. By showing after each trial the movement endpoint displaced radially with respect to its true position, we were able to alter progressively the gain of the visuomanual loop. In experiment 1, the KR was provided only for transversal movements and for one target distance, but the effect generalized to all directions and all distances. Moreover, it also generalized to the other hand tha

Behavior segmentation by boys as a function of aggressiveness and prior information.

Previous research documents a hostile attribution bias by aggressive boys when considering a social situation with ambiguous cues as to the intention of the participants. The present research evaluated whether this bias extends to the manner in which boys process incoming information. Aggressiveness of boys in grades 3-6 was assessed with peer behavior nominations. In a separate session, each child viewed a videotape of 2 boys playing tag on a playground and segmented the actions using a standard behavior segmentation procedure. A critical event occurred when one of the boys fell down after be

Amount of kinematic feedback affects learning of speech motor skills.

Knowledge of Performance (KP) feedback, such as biofeedback or kinematic feedback, is used to provide information on the nature and quality of movement responses for the purpose of guiding active learning or rehabilitation of motor skills. It has been proposed that KP feedback may interfere with long-term learning when provided throughout training. Here, twelve healthy English-speaking adults were trained to produce a trilled Russian [r] in words with KP kinematic feedback using electropalatography (EPG) and without KP (noKP). Five one-hour training sessions were provided over one week with te

Can relative strength between the back and knees differentiate lifting strategy?

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether relative strength between the back and knees can differentiate and predict lifting strategy and the effects of gender, load magnitude, and knowledge of strength on the strategy. BACKGROUND: Although muscular strength is thought to play a vital role in the mechanics of lifting, how localized joint strengths and their relations influence lifting strategy remains unclear. METHOD: Thirty-two participants (16 men and 16 women) underwent isokinetic strength tests and were then divided into two groups: one provided with the knowledge of their strength test

Counterfactually mediated emotions: a developmental study of regret and relief in a probabilistic gambling task.

Regret and relief are related to counterfactual thinking and rely on comparison processes between what has been and what might have been. In this article, we study the development of regret and relief from late childhood to adulthood (11.2-20.2 years), and we examine how these two emotions affect individuals' willingness to retrospectively reconsider their choice in a computerized monetary gambling task. We asked participants to choose between two "wheels of fortune" that differed in the amount of gain and loss expected and the probability of winning. We manipulated the outcome of the wheel of
