Laminoplasty was developed to treat multilevel pathology of the cervical spine, namely ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament and cervical spondylotic myelopathy. Laminoplasty was popularized in the 1980s, and since then many variations on the theme have been developed. All are similar in that they expand the cervical canal while leaving the protective dorsal elements in place. Advocates claim that this prevents the formation of the "postlaminectomy" membrane, maintains spinal alignment, and should aid in maintaining cervical range of motion. The aforementioned are all potential s

OBJECT: Cervical laminoplasty is a recognized technique commonly used for multilevel posterior cervical decompression, and it is favored over laminectomy for maintaining spinal stability. Traditional hinge techniques, however, limit lateral exposure on one side and can limit dural exposure. The authors present their experience with a modified laminoplasty technique incorporating complete laminectomy and placement of titanium miniplate instrumentation. This method allows wide bilateral posterior decompression and unobscured dural access.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients (mean age 57 years) under

BACKGROUND: Laminoplasty is an established alternative to laminectomy for posterior cervical decompression in spondylotic myelopathy. However, standard laminoplasty requires internal fixation, which is often not obtainable in developing countries. We present our experience with a technique of noninstrumented (floating) laminoplasty developed to avoid the need to anchor the laminoplasty to the anterior elements.
METHODS: We have used floating laminoplasty (FL) for posterior cervical decompression in patients with cervical spondylosis since 2004 and report the technique and our experience with

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Laminoplasty of the cervical spine is widely used as an effective surgical method to treat compressive myelopathy of the cervical spine; however, there is an adverse effect of kyphosis after surgery. The risk factors or predictors of kyphosis have not been sufficiently evaluated.
PURPOSE: To assess the risk factors for kyphosis following laminoplasty.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
PATIENT SAMPLE: Patients diagnosed with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) or ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) who underwent laminoplasty between May 2011 and

Techniques of expansive laminoplasty for degenerative cervical myelopathy and ossified posterior longitudinal ligament are described, focusing on the history of the surgical procedure. Laminectomy was the only approach for posterior decompression before Japanese orthopedic surgeons introduced laminoplasty from the 1970s to the 1980s to overcome the poor outcomes of laminectomy. Recent laminoplasty techniques offer less invasive maneuvers to the posterior cervical muscle structures to reduce axial neck pain and to obtain better functional outcome, but every operation is carried out based on the

This article reviews cervical laminoplasty. The origin of cervical laminoplasty dates back to cervical laminectomy performed in Japan ~50 years ago. To overcome poor surgical outcomes of cervical laminectomy, many Japanese orthopedic spine surgeons devoted their lives to developing better posterior decompression procedures for the cervical spine. Thanks to the development of a high-speed surgical burr, posterior decompression procedures for the cervical spine showed vast improvement from the 1970s to the 1980s, and the original form of cervical laminoplasty was determined. Since around 2000, s

Achondroplasia is associated with short pedicles that predispose individuals with this trait to develop symptomatic spinal canal stenosis. Laminoplasty is an excellent means of treating cervical myelopathy due to stenosis in selected individuals. Laminoplasty preserves segmental motion and stability, both of which are of benefit to all individuals. The authors report the successful surgical treatment of an achondroplastic adult woman with laminoplasty. This procedure alleviated her symptoms, and she was doing well at 2-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Laminoplasty provides an alternative to anterior procedures or multilevel laminectomy for patients with multilevel spinal stenosis and myeloradiculopathy.
PURPOSE: To review the techniques, results and complications of cervical laminoplasty.
STUDY DESIGN: The three basic variations of laminoplasty are the single open door, the French door or midline and the Z-plasty technique. These techniques and their outcome are discussed in detail.
RESULTS: The recovery rate after laminoplasty ranges from 50% to 70% without statistical superiority of any one technique over another. C

STUDY DESIGN: Results of C4-C7 laminoplasty with C3 laminectomy and C3-C7 laminoplasty were compared.
OBJECTIVES: To clarify prospectively whether the modified laminoplasty preserving the semispinalis cervicis inserted into C2 could reduce the axial symptoms compared with conventional laminoplasty reattaching the muscle to C2.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Intraoperative damage of the semispinalis cervicis is relevant to the development of axial symptoms after laminoplasty. In C3-C7 laminoplasty, however, it is difficult to preserve the muscle insertion into C2 while opening the C3 lamina.

INTRODUCTION: In a multilevel cervical laminoplasty operation for patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM), a partial or complete C3 laminectomy may be performed at the upper level instead of a C3 plated laminoplasty. It is unknown whether C3 technique above the laminoplasty affects loss of cervical lordosis or range of motion.
METHODS: Patients undergoing multilevel laminoplasty of the cervical spine (C3-C6/C7) at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into two cohorts based on surgical technique at C3: C3-C6/C7 plated laminoplasty ("C3 laminopla

Cervical laminoplasty is a non-fusion, decompression procedure for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). It is most commonly indicated for patients with multilevel stenosis who have preserved sagittal alignment and minimal to no axial neck pain related to spondylosis. Expansion of the laminar arch can allow for direct and indirect decompression of the spinal canal. Relative contraindications include those patients with significant preoperative neck pain, kyphotic alignment and substantial instability. Potential advantages over laminectomy and fusion include avoiding fusion-related complicatio

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a common condition. Uninstrumented laminectomy may be complicated by postoperative instability, whereas anterior or posterior decompression with fusion may be associated with stiffness and adjacent segment disease. Cervical laminoplasty, initially oriented towards pediatric patients and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, becomes an interesting surgical alternative to decompress and reconstruct cervical anatomy without fusion. Eighteen patients (12 men, 6 women), mean age 64.2 who presented with CSM were treated surgically using multile

Cervical laminoplasty is becoming a popular technique for the treatment of cervical myelopathy that is the result of multilevel canal stenosis. Many variations in this technique, which was originally created in Japan, have been developed, all with the goal of increasing canal space and reconstructing the posterior bony arch. We describe our extensive experience with this procedure for the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

Cervical laminoplasty was developed as an alternative to cervical laminectomy for treatment of cervical myelopathy, in which hinges are created to lift the lamina. Various techniques of laminoplasty have since been developed after two prototype techniques: Hirabayashi's open-door laminoplasty and Kurokawa's spinous process splitting (double-door) laminoplasty. Several in vitro studies report superior biomechanical stability of the cervical spine after laminoplasty compared with laminectomy. In clinical situation, randomized control studies are scarce and superiority of one procedure over anoth

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Open-door laminoplasty is a useful operation in the surgical management of cervical myelopathy with favorable outcomes and relatively low complications. One potential undesirable outcome is a decrease in cervical lordosis postoperatively. It is unknown whether the most proximal level undergoing laminoplasty affects the magnitude of loss of lordosis.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the loss of cervical lordosis postoperatively in patients for whom the most proximal level undergoing laminoplasty is C3 versus C4.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: A retrospective radiographic review
