[Zoonoses related to leisure activities].

Zoonoses related to leisure activities. Many zoonoses can be contracted by humans during recreational activities. In the context of a walk, some of them, such as Lyme disease, are transmissible by biological vectors, particularly ticks, or by aerosol (Q fever, hantavirose), whereas others can be contracted in case of aquatic activities (leptospirosis), hunting (tularaemia), and visits to pet farms or fairs (especially the hemolytic uremic syndrome). The risk is increased by the taste of urban populations for outdoor activities and by their ignorance of the risks associated with wild and domest

Noise exposure from leisure activities: a review.

Over the past two decades there has been increasing concern about the role of nonoccupational, or leisure noise on hearing. This paper reviews published studies that detail the noise levels and potential effects of some noisy leisure activities. Considered are the most common sources of leisure noise: exposure to live or amplified rock, classical, or jazz music; exposures from personal listening devices ("walkman" type); noise around the home, and hunting and target shooting. Although all activities listed above have the potential for dangerous levels of noise exposure, the most serious threat

Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted among 187 community-dwelling people aged 79 to 93 years. TGP, FGA, and leisure activity participation were asked with questionnaires. Physical performance was assessed with the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Results: TGP m

Inherent commonalities between arts-based leisure activities and psychological therapies.

Prevalences of anxiety, depression, and related mental health difficulties continue to rise across many high-income countries, while existing treatment services face growing pressures and limited capacity. Alongside formal psychological and pharmacological interventions, everyday behaviours that support mental health resilience warrant greater attention. An expanding evidence base shows that arts-based leisure activities-including participating in music, visual arts, dance, creative writing, and visiting cultural venues and performances-can produce meaningful psychological benefits for people

Leisure activities, apolipoprotein E e4 status, and the risk of dementia.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Leisure activities have been associated with a decreased risk of dementia. However, to date, no study has explored how apolipoprotein E (ApoE) e4 status or vascular risk factors modified the association between leisure activities and dementia risks. METHODS: This case-control study recruited patients (age ≥ 60 years) with Alzheimer's disease (AD; n = 292) and vascular dementia (VaD; n = 144) and healthy controls (n = 506) from three teaching hospitals in Taiwan between 2007 and 2010. Information on patient's leisure activities were obtained through a questionnaire. Conditi

Prosociality predicts changes in leisure activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several studies suggest that leisure activities enhance well-being. In line with this perspective, a recent study indicates that augmenting indoor leisure activities to compensate for diminished outdoor pursuits could sustain or enhance well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study was designed to identify personality traits that predict such behavioral shifts in indoor versus outdoor leisure activities during the pandemic. The present study included 657 participants (Mage = 41.08) and measured 12 personality traits that a previous study reported were associated with health-protec

Patterns of leisure activities of young adults with mild mental retardation.

Leisure activities were examined for young adults with mild mental retardation. Some had disappeared from mental retardation services after leaving school; others were in adult day services. Peers without mental retardation (comparison subjects) were also included. Various leisure activities were combined using cluster analysis. Some adults with mental retardation and some comparison subjects were found in each of the 13 clusters obtained but proportions varied. Leisure patterns were strongly influenced by gender and marital status as well as mental retardation, except for one cluster, Sociall

Leisure physical activity and age at menarche.

Early menarche has been associated with higher risk of breast cancer. A prospective study of 2487 girls, has been conducted in Quebec City, Canada, to evaluate the relationship of exercise to menarche, taking personal and family characteristics into account. Weight, height, body mass index, and abdominal and supra-iliac skinfolds were inversely associated with age of menstruation. Mother's age at menarche was positively associated with age of menstruation. Age, mother's age at menarche, and weight-adjusted incidence density ratios (IDR) showed no association between energy expenditure and onse

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate potential associations between leisure activities and all-cause mortality among the elderly population in China. METHODS: We used data from six pooled waves from 1998 to 2018 consisting of 44620 individuals from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Cox non-proportional hazards models were employed to estimate the correlations between leisure activities and all-cause mortality while adjusting for a time-varying coefficient, sociodemographic, self-reported medical history, and other pertinent confounders.
