INTRODUCTION: The United States continues to face persistent nursing shortages, even as many licensed nurses are not employed in nursing roles. The enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC 2.0), a mutual licensure recognition agreement, is promoted as a strategy to increase workforce supply and flexibility, yet no prior research has assessed whether it helps licensed but nonpracticing nurses return to the profession.
METHODS: Using American Community Survey data (2010-2023) and state-level licensure and employment data (2015-2023), we evaluated whether NLC 2.0 adoption is associated with changes

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students are at a high risk for mental health challenges, suicidal behaviors, and risk factors. High stress levels and personal and academic pressure may lead to mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder in undergraduate nursing students. Nursing students experience barriers to mental health such as lack of support, academic burnout, and stigma.
AIM: This paper presents the components for a comprehensive suicide prevention plan that nursing faculty can implement into pre-licensure nurse education.

BACKGROUND: Amid longstanding nursing shortages, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, federal, provincial, and territorial governments across Canada prioritized the recruitment of internationally educated nurses (IENs). As a result, nursing regulators were strongly encouraged to implement a range of policy shifts to reduce licensure barriers. The nature and scope of these reforms have varied across jurisdictions.
OBJECTIVE: To identify and compare the policy processes, drivers, and outcomes of IEN licensure reforms in the Canadian jurisdictions of British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Nova

INTRODUCTION: Integrating gamification methods into undergraduate nursing programs has prepared students to pass the nursing comprehensive predictor test and the licensure examination.
LITERATURE REVIEW: Research demonstrates that the motivational factors of game elements like badging and leaderboards are of great value and utility to student engagement and motivation. The badges symbolize achievement, authority, and belonging, whereas leaderboards rank students based on different levels of course engagement.
DISCUSSION: This paper explores the benefits, challenges, and strategies of incorpo

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine the power of key admission and nursing school variables for predicting performance on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). A meta-analysis of 31 independent samples across 7,159 participants yielded correlation estimates for 13 different predictors. Results indicated that standardized admissions tests (SAT and ACT) were effective predictors of performance. Prenursing grade point average (GPA) was also predictive, but to a lesser extent. Grades earned during baccalaureate degree nursing education were espec

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing adoption of simulation during clinical training disruptions, little is known about how students perceive its ability to replace clinical placements. This study aims to explore the perceptions, attitudes and experiences of final-year pre-licensure nursing students regarding simulation-based training as a substitution for clinical practice. METHODS: This study adopted an exploratory qualitative design with face-to-face focus group interviews. Two accident and emergency case scenarios involving tachycardia and drug overdose were developed and simulated in the si

The introduction of Egypt's national nursing pre-licensure examination has created new academic and psychological challenges for final-year nursing students, particularly because of limited familiarity with the examination format and insufficient structured preparation resources. Although combined examination-preparation and stress-management programs may improve students' readiness, evidence regarding their effectiveness in reducing perceived stress among Egyptian nursing students remains limited. To evaluate the effect of a structured Maintenance of Certification-based training program on pe

BACKGROUND: Pre- and post-licensure nursing students often face academic challenges in high stakes courses such as pathophysiology and pharmacology. To promote nursing program completion and timely graduation, it is important that students achieve success in these courses.
PURPOSE: Recognizing the need to provide comprehensive academic support to students enrolled in pathophysiology and pharmacology, one school of nursing implemented an academic excellence initiative called NEST (Nursing Excellence through Scholarship and Technology).
METHOD: The NEST program combines targeted academic inter

Schools of nursing are encouraged to provide a course of study offering unique educational models that support the learning needs of adult students who attained a non-nursing Bachelor's Degree prior to enrolling in nursing school, Also known as nontraditional students, graduates of these programs often go on to seek graduate degrees in nursing (McKenna and Brooks, 2018). Non-traditional students may be older and desire to complete graduate education in a timely manner. The study focus was to determine if pre-licensure BSN students can successfully complete graduate course work during their pre

AIM: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of pre-licensure nursing faculty in the United States (U.S.) with LGBTQ+ inclusivity in their teaching practice.
BACKGROUND: Nursing faculty must prepare students to provide equitable care for LGBTQ+ patients and populations. There is a gap in the evidence related to nursing faculty experiences with LGBTQ+ inclusivity.
METHODS: This explanatory mixed-methods study consisted of a cross-sectional survey (phase I) and semi-structured interviews (phase II). Findings from phase I were used to design the interview guide and inform pu

BACKGROUND: Oncology nurse practitioners (ONPs) are advanced practice RNs prepared at the graduate level with high-level knowledge and skills in oncology. Because of challenges in educational programs and variability in the scope of practice at the state and institutional level, many ONPs are challenged to practice to the full extent of their education, certification, and licensure.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this article is to review issues affecting the education and practice patterns of ONPs and to identify solutions to address the challenges that exist for ONPs.

OBJECTIVE: This review will synthesize the available evidence on approaches used by Canadian academic institutions to keep nursing students safe during clinical placements.
INTRODUCTION: The safety of health care workers is a global priority, with growing concern for pre-licensure students. Nursing students face heightened physical, psychological, and professional risks as they provide direct, sustained patient care within complex clinical environments. Academic institutions play a critical role in safeguarding students by creating protective learning environments.

OBJECTIVE: Therapeutic communication is essential to nursing practice, yet many pre-licensure nursing students report discomfort applying these skills in clinical settings. Standardized patient (SP) simulation offers a controlled environment for practicing communication, yet qualitative research describing students' perceptions of these experiences remains limited. This study explored undergraduate nursing students' perspectives on small-group, communication-focused SP simulations within a psychiatric-mental health nursing course.
METHODS: As part of a larger program evaluation, six in-person

The rapidity and degree of development of regulation by boards of nursing of advanced practice nurses (APNs) and programs for their preparation has varied from state to state over the past 20 years. In general, boards have authority only to regulate advanced practice through the recognition of APNs and the setting of standards and scope of their practice. In the early 1990s, lack of consistent APN educational program standards and experiences and criteria for recognition of APNs was problematic at the levels of accreditation, certification, and regulation. The interdependency of these concepts

In 1982, Florida legislation mandated the use of the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) to measure student achievement in college-level communication and computation skills. The exam is currently used in Florida's schools of higher education as a requirement for admittance to the junior year. This article addresses the CLAST as a predictor variable of academic success for students (N = 55) seeking a baccalaureate degree in nursing and for their ability to pass the examination for registered nurse licensure on their first attempt. The study also looks at other factors such as student gr

BACKGROUND: The role of nurses in cardiothoracic transplantation has evolved over the last 25 years. Transplant nurses work in a variety of roles in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to manage complex pre- and post-transplantation issues. There is lack of clarity and consistency regarding required qualifications to practice transplant nursing, delineation of roles and adequate levels of staffing.
METHODS: A consensus conference with workgroup sessions, consisting of 77 nurse participants with clinical experience in cardiothoracic transplantation, was arranged. This was followed by su

INTRODUCTION: Effective communication is an essential part of nursing care. Nurses need to effectively communicate with patients, families, providers and staff. The purpose of this study was to show how the use of technology (i.e., video conferencing on an electronic device) could assist nursing students to gain more confidence and reduce anxiety when discussing difficult topics such as sexual intimacy.
METHODS: Pre-licensure nursing students were recruited to participate as part of regular class activities. A pre- and post-survey asking about their confidence and anxiety in communicating wit

There is a clearly documented need for greater minority representation in professional nursing as the nation grows more diversified. Increasing the ranks of minority nurses will assist both in alleviating the nursing shortage and in addressing the health care disparities that plague our healthcare systems. One barrier has been the recruitment and retention of underserved minority nursing students. To address this, the Coppin State University Helene Fuld School of Nursing (HFSON) in Baltimore, Maryland developed and implemented the "Coppin Academy for Pre-Nursing Success" (CAPS), a comprehensiv

The journey toward a fulfilling career in nephrology nursing is one of both profound challenge and immense reward. It requires skill, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to patient care. This article adapts Career Pathways into Nephrology Nursing into a guide for schools of nursing, health systems, and dialysis and transplant units. Integrating current evidence-based practices, it proposes a competency-based framework applying from pre-licensure through advanced practice and leadership, defining phased-in strategies for adoption without mandates, and suggesting an evaluation and research
