Oxytocic properties of the aqueous extract of Globimetula braunii (loranthaceae).

The leaves of Globimetula braunii are used in ethnomedicine to augment labour. The crude aqueous extract of the plant was tested on isolated rat uteri. The agonistic activity of the aqueous extract was compared with that of a standard uterine stimulant oxytocin and uterine smooth muscle antagonists atropine and salbutamol. The extract was found to exhibit oxytocic activity on the uterine smooth muscle which was less potent than that of oxytocin. The force of contraction (3.60 +/-0.25 g) elicited by the highest concentration of the extract (640 mg/ ml) was similar to that of 2.7 x 10-4 mg / ml

Host defense responses of mesquite (Prosopis laevigata, Fabaceae) trees against the mistletoe (Psittacanthus calyculatus, Loranthaceae) during the early stage of infection.

Mesquite (Prosopis laevigata, Fabaceae) is a legume widely distributed in Mexico and infested by the mistletoe (Psittacanthus calyculatus, Loranthaceae), a parasitic plant that absorbs water and nutrients from the mesquite. For parasitism to become established, the mistletoe must evade host defenses. To date, these defenses have only been studied in hosts with advanced parasitic infestations, but the initial defense of mesquite against these infestations remains unknown. The objective of this work was to investigate the early stress responses of mesquite trees after the first physical contact

Unveiling the Pharmacognosy of an Aerial Parasite: Scurrula cordifolia and the Transfer of Medicinal Potential from Host to Mistletoe.

Mistletoes are obligate hemi-parasitic angiosperms that establish complex ecological and physiological relationships with their forest hosts through specialized haustorial systems. To maintain nutrient flux, these parasites withstand more negative water potentials than their hosts, utilizing succulent leaves for strategic rehydration. Although root parasites have been extensively studied, the absorptive structures and host-parasite dynamics of the Loranthaceae family, the largest group of mistletoes, remain under-investigated. This study explores the genus Scurrula, specifically the less-studi

Natural product hybrid and its superacid synthesized analogues: dodoneine and its derivatives show selective inhibition of carbonic anhydrase isoforms I, III, XIII and XIV.

The natural product dodoneine (a dihydropyranone phenolic compound), extracted from African mistletoe Agelanthus dodoneifolius, has been investigated as inhibitor of several human carbonic anhydrase (hCA, EC 4.2.1.1) isoforms. By using superacid chemistry, analogues of the lactone phenolic hybrid lead compound have been synthesized and tested as CA inhibitors. Small chemical modifications of the basic scaffold revealed strong changes in the selectivity profile against different CA isoforms. These new compounds selectively inhibited isoforms CA I (K(I)s in the range of 0.13-0.76 μM), III (K(I)s
