The amount of legislation and guidelines published on decontamination reflects the current attitude of politicians and the general public to the desire to reduce the risk of infection. Incidents, such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle with the subsequent risk of transmission of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (VCJD), require greater compliance by healthcare workers to the guidance both in the hospital and the wider community. The change in care provision and the demands of government in training and education. This article will look at recent government guidance and the imp

Personal lubricants and lubricants used in condoms contain a number of ingredients which are also present in cosmetic products. These have to comply to the medical device regulation (745/2017) which should provide the same level of consumer protection, if not more, as foreseen in the legal framework of cosmetics (1223/2009). In the current study we developed an analytical method capable of identifying and quantifying 15 ingredients, commonly found in lubricants and cosmetics. Based upon their most important toxicological endpoint, the substances involved were grouped in three toxicological cla

BACKGROUND: In recent years, skin reactions secondary to the use of medical devices (MD), such as allergic contact dermatitis have increasingly been observed (e.g. to continuous blood sugar monitoring systems, insulin pumps, wound dressings, medical gloves, etc.): this is regarded as a developing epidemic. Lack of labelling of the composition of MD, as well as frequent lack of cooperation of manufacturers to disclose this relevant information, even when contacted by the clinician for the individual case of an established adverse reaction, significantly impede patient care.

INTRODUCTION: The EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR), effective since May 25, 2017, aims to enhance the safety and quality of medical devices within the EU. This study models the potential net mortality implications of the MDR in Germany under explicit assumptions about safety improvements, market withdrawals, and certification delays.
METHODS: A combined top-down and bottom-up approach was employed to evaluate the impact of the EU MDR on mortality in Germany. The top-down approach estimated avoided deaths using the Keyfitz-Vaupel life-table elasticity, while the bottom-up approach quantified

Contraceptive development, including the development of IUDs, is discussed in light of the changing regulatory role of the FDA. The paper considers how the FDA and the government affect contraceptive development. Events that led to the demise of IUD use in the United States probably will have long-lasting effects on all future contraceptive development by the pharmaceutical industry in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The use of apps in healthcare and medical research is increasing. Apps in healthcare may be beneficial to patients and healthcare professionals, but their use comes with potential risks. How to use apps in clinical care is not standard part of medical training, resulting in a lack of knowledge. As healthcare professionals and their employers can be held accountable for the wrongful use of medical apps, this situation is undesirable. This article addresses the most important European legislation regarding medical apps from the perspective of healthcare providers.

INTRODUCTION: Often used interchangeably with 'additive manufacturing,' 3D printing involves creating a three-dimensional (3D) object from a digital model, by building successive layers of raw material. By adding material to only where it is needed, 3D printing has the potential to save considerable resources compared to 'subtractive manufacturing' which involves removing the excessive materials to make the necessary part. In addition to cost-savings, 3D printing offers flexibility in design and the possibility of personalizing a 3D-printed object to a patient's anatomy. Some of the potential

OBJECTIVE: The use of the Balt Goldbal-balloon and Baltacci-catheter in Fetoscopic Endoluminal Tracheal Occlusion is affected by the 2017-European Medical Device Regulation, which necessitates recertification even for devices long considered safe. This regulation has led the manufacturer to stop distributing these devices in Europe. We alert fetal surgery centers to these challenges and regulators to the broader impact on the availability of fetal therapy devices in Europe.
METHODS: We surveyed 50 fetal surgery centers worldwide and communicated directly with the manufacturer. Additionally, w

During the relatively short history of class proceedings in Canada, developers and manufacturers of medical devices and pharmaceuticals ("medical products"), including medical products designed for patients with diabetes, have found themselves at the receiving end of a significant number of class action claims. As a result, medical products litigation has become the battleground for some of the most significant developments in Canadian class actions law. This article provides a broad overview of some of the most significant developments. The authors pay particular attention to developments reg

A custom-made device (CMD) is a medical device intended for the sole use of a particular patient. In a dental setting, CMDs include prosthodontic devices, orthodontic appliances, bruxism splints, speech prostheses and devices for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea, trauma prevention and orthognathic surgery facilitation (arch bars and interocclusal wafers). Since 1993, the production and provision of CMDs have been subject to European Union (EU) Directive 93/42/EEC (Medical Device Directive, MDD) given effect in the UK by The Medical Devices Regulations 2002 (Statutory Instrument 2002/6

The Medical Device Regulation (MDR) was adopted in 2017 to replace the Medical Device Directive. Key changes included more rigorous clinical evidence requirements, increased scrutiny of notified bodies and improved traceability of medical devices, with the overarching aim to improve their safety and quality. For chronic haemodialysis, the impact of the MDR on devices has been substantial, resulting in niche devices being no longer available, and critical shortages, especially in paediatric nephrology. The EuDial board discussed these developments and concluded that the MDR has had a clear nega

Certification of Medical Device Software (MDS) according to the EU Medical Device Regulation 2017/745 requires demonstrating safety and effectiveness. Thus, the syllabus of a course on MDS development must provide tools for addressing these issues. To assure safety, risk analysis has to be performed using a four-step procedure. Effectiveness could be demonstrated by literature systematic review combined with meta-analysis, to compare the MDS performances with those of similar tools.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in clinical decision-making, yet recent proposals to simplify the European Union (EU) Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) have reopened the question of whether AI-enabled medical devices should remain subject to the AI Act's full high-risk regime. Under the current framework, AI-enabled medical devices are regulated through a combination of sectoral medical device legislation (the Medical Devices Regulation (MDR) and In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Regulation (IVDR)) and additional AI-specific safeguards contained in the AI Act. This n
