Nurse-to-nurse shift handoffs on medical-surgical units: A process within the flow of nursing care.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To qualitatively investigate the medical-surgical nurse shift handoff as a process within the workflow of the exchanging nurses. Specifically, this study sought to identify the ideal handoff, ways the handoff deviated from ideal, and subsequent effect on nursing care. BACKGROUND: The functions as well as information content of the handoff have been studied. However, typical studies look at the handoff as an isolated activity utilising nurse perceptions as the primary measure of quality. DESIGN: Semi-structured focus groups were conducted to discuss nurses' perspectives o

Nurse-Led Mobility Program: Driving a Culture of Early Mobilization in Medical-Surgical Nursing.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized medical-surgical patients are at risk for adverse health outcomes due to immobility. Despite well-documented consequences, low mobility is prevalent. LOCAL PROBLEM: In a 547-bed hospital, medical-surgical patients were mobilized less frequently than expected. Physical therapists were inappropriately consulted 22% of the time for routine mobility of patients. A preimplementation survey of registered nurses indicated a lack of knowledge and confidence to safely mobilize patients. METHODS: This quality improvement project implemented a nurse-led mobility program in an e

Effect of Workplace Violence and Psychological Stress Responses on Medical-Surgical Nurses' Medication Intake.

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is a prevalent phenomenon in the health-care sector globally, but few studies have examined its impact on nurses' use of prescribed and/or over-the-counter medications to manage signs and symptoms. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the direct and indirect effect of workplace violence, through the pathway of psychological stress responses, on nurses' frequencies of medication intake. An occupational stress and health outcomes model was tested in this study. METHODS: A secondary analysis of cross-sectional survey data from 551 medical-surgical nur

Reigniting the Passion for Medical-Surgical Nursing: Unveiling Its Crucial Role in Health Care.

The declining interest among newly licensed nurses in medical-surgical nursing, compared to other specialties, poses a challenge to healthcare systems as they navigate staffing shortages and experienced nurse turnover in this important area. While the factors influencing specialty preferences remain unclear, nursing professional development practitioners play a vital role in bridging the gap between newly licensed nurses' interests and the essential needs of health care, fostering a stronger alignment and support for this foundational specialty.

Increasing Palliative Care Consultation Through a Nurse-Driven Screening Protocol on a Medical-Surgical Unit.

Palliative care consultation frequently occurs late in hospitalization despite known benefits for symptom management and care planning. Nurses often recognize unmet needs but may hesitate to initiate referral because of uncertainty, misconceptions, and reliance on physician direction. Lack of standardized identification processes contributes to inconsistent and potentially inequitable access to palliative services. This quality improvement project evaluated whether a nurse-driven screening tool combined with targeted education increased palliative care consultation rates and nursing knowledge

An Innovative Escape Room Intervention to Improve Medical-Surgical Nurses' Knowledge, Confidence, and Care of Patients With Sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a leading cause of transfers to intensive care units (ICUs) and hospital mortality, often due to delayed recognition in medical-surgical units. LOCAL PROBLEM: Project site sepsis data showed that 19.4% of ICU transfers originated from medical-surgical units, accounting for 27% of sepsis mortality cases. INTERVENTION: This quality improvement project evaluated a sepsis-themed escape room to train medical-surgical nurses. RESULTS: After training, mean knowledge scores increased from 77.4% to 82.4% ( P = .068). Significant improvements were seen in self-reported confidenc

Factors Determining Work Arduousness Levels among Nurses: Using the Example of Surgical, Medical Treatment, and Emergency Wards.

INTRODUCTION: Staff shortages among nurses have been severely felt in most countries around the world for many years. In Poland, this problem is particularly visible due to the lowest nursing employment rate per 1000 inhabitants among 28 EU states and the high rate of leaving the profession. The average age of Polish nurses has been constantly growing for several years-in 2016 it was 50.79, while in 2008 it was 44.19. These data confirm that young nurses are the first to leave the profession. Diagnosis of the working conditions and psychosocial burden level among nurses should be subject to de

Medical-surgical nurses' perceived self-confidence and leadership abilities as first responders in acute patient deterioration events.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore and understand medical-surgical nurses' perceived self-confidence and leadership abilities as first responders in recognising and responding to clinical deterioration prior to the arrival of an emergency response team. BACKGROUND: Patients are admitted to hospitals with multiple, complex health issues who are more likely to experience clinical deterioration. The majority of clinical deterioration events occur on medical-surgical units, and medical-surgical nurses are frequently the first healthcare professionals to identify signs and symptoms of clinical deteri
