Morphological and Molecular Evidence for Infrageneric Relationships in Blastus (Melastomataceae).

Blastus Lour. is a taxonomically complex genus of Sonerileae (Melastomataceae), with unresolved infrageneric relationships and controversial boundaries among several species and varieties. In this study, we integrated morphological evidence with a broadly sampled internal transcribed spacer (ITS) dataset, an expanded nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) dataset, plastome data, and genomic single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data to evaluate the phylogenetic relationships and classification within Blastus. The broadly sampled ITS and expanded nrDNA analyses supported the monophyly of the sampled Blas

The Genus Miconia Ruiz & Pav. (Melastomataceae): Ethnomedicinal Uses, Pharmacology, and Phytochemistry.

Species of the genus Miconia are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of diseases, such as pain, throat infections, fever, and cold, and they used as depuratives, diuretics, and sedatives. This work reviewed studies carried out with Miconia species, highlighting its ethnomedicinal uses and pharmacological and phytochemical potential. This information was collected in the main platforms of scientific research (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science). Our findings show that some of the traditional uses of Miconia are corroborated by biological and/or pharmacological assays, which demonstra

Miconiagaragoana - Melastomataceae: A new rheophytic species from the eastern Andes of Colombia.

A new species, Miconiagaragoana, from riparian environments of the northern Cordillera Oriental of Colombia, is described. This is the second species exclusive to rheophytic conditions that grows in the Andean forest in Colombia and is characterized by the presence of stellate-lepidote trichomes on young structures and inflorescences, terminal inflorescences, 4-merous (rarely 5-merous) flowers, oblong-subulate anthers with an apical pore and 2-locular ovary. The differences with other rheophytic species occurring in Colombia are noted and it is argued that it is related to other Andean species

The complete chloroplast genome of Melastoma dendrisetosum (melastomataceae), a shrub endemic to Hainan island, China.

Melastoma dendrisetosum is a narrowly distributed shrub endemic to Hainan, China, and lacks published genomic data. We sequenced, assembled, and annotated its complete chloroplast genome. The plastome is 156,649 bp in length, exhibits a typical quadripartite structure, and contains 131 annotated gene copies (87 protein-coding, eight rRNA and 36 tRNA genes) representing 112 non-redundant genes. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian analyses of 20 complete chloroplast genomes consistently resolved M. dendrisetosum as sister to M. candidum with strong support. This study provides valuable genomic resou

Genetic diversity and conservation of a rare Miconia species (Melastomataceae) from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

Biodiversity is undergoing an unprecedented global decline, and genetic diversity plays a fundamental role in ensuring species persistence. Miconia ulei, an endemic species from the eastern Atlantic Forest in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, is rare and has few known populations. We investigated genetic diversity and population structure using microsatellite markers and assessed its conservation status following IUCN guidelines and by incorporating genetic parameters in the evaluation. Five extant populations were sampled across the species' known distribution, and twelve species-specific micr

An exploratory study of the functional significance of the floral secretory structures in two Miconia species (Melastomataceae).

Aiming to verify whether the diversity of secretory structures with their respective exudates are or not responsible for the attendance of floral visitors in Miconia species, the floral secretory structures of two Amazonian species of Miconia were described and interpreted from the functional perspectives and observations of floral visitors. Flowers and floral visitors were collected in the field for 16 months. The flowers were subjected to standard anatomical analyzes using light and scanning electron microscopy, and the secretory structures were evaluated using histochemical tests. The insec

New species of Microlicia (Melastomataceae) and identification key for the genus in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

From the first collection to formal description, many new species remain forgotten in herbaria for decades. In the case of Microlicia, a large genus in the Melastomataceae family, this delay is likely due to the high number of species and their remarkable morphological diversity. In this context, we describe Microlicia badiniana, which took more than 80 years to be recognized as a new species. This species occurs in the district of Lavras Novas, Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We compare M. badiniana with M. cuspidifolia, M. elegans, M. sublaevis, M. tetrasticha, and M. warmingiana, morpholo

Forecasts of climate-driven habitat suitability distribution are complicated by taxonomic and cytogenetic complexity in Rhexia (Melastomataceae).

Rhexia (Melastomataceae), a temperate genus composed of 13 species in eastern North America, provides a useful system for evaluating how taxonomic and cytogenetic complexity influence forecasts of climate-driven habitat suitability distribution. Ecological niche models incorporating climatic and edaphic variables were used to estimate current and future habitat suitability for diploid, polyploid, and mixed-cytotype species. Habitat suitability was strongly associated with soil texture, hydrological conditions, and precipitation, with suitable environments characterized by sandy, acidic, and se

Biology and host preferences of Cryptorhynchus melastomae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a possible biocontrol agent for Miconia calvescens (Melastomataceae) in Hawaii.

The introduced plant Miconia calvescens (Melastomataceae) poses a grave threat to Hawaii's native ecosystems and biodiversity. One potential candidate for classical biological control is Cryptorhynchus melastomae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Cryptorhynchinae), a stem-boring weevil from Central and South America. This weevil feeds on M. calvescens in its native Costa Rica and has been successfully reared under greenhouse conditions. Comparison of its environmental conditions in Costa Rica with those in the Miconia infested areas of Hawaii indicates the latter is a suitable habitat for C. melasto

A comparative study of metal levels in leaves of some Al-accumulating Rubiaceae.

Concentrations of Al, Si, Fe, Mn, Cu and Ca were analysed in leaves of ten Rubiaceae species, most of which are Al accumulators, and these were compared with concentrations in one species of Melastomataceae. Quantitative data confirmed the distribution of Al accumulation as previously determined by semi-quantitative tests, and suggest that there is an apparent congruency between the shoot Al concentration and the number of accumulators within a certain genus or tribe. Al accumulators within the Rubiaceae are most characteristic of the Rubioideae subfamily, although a second origin is likely in
