[Reactions at the nonprecious metal-ceramic interface during porcelain firing. (3) A commercial alloy forming much Cr oxide during firing].

To examine the interface reaction between porcelain and a commercial Ni-Cr dental alloy (containing higher Cr and Mo) during porcelain firing, electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction have been used to characterize the interface which has emerged by means of selective dissolution of the alloy caused by a bromine-methanol solution. Much Cr oxide was formed at the early stage of firing, and remained in the reaction layer even if the holding time at 960 degrees C was up to 8 minutes. As a result, many Cr atoms diffused into the porcelain layer, most of which was found to form oxi

Galvanic gold plating for fixed dental prosthesis.

Metal ceramic partial fixed dental prostheses have been commonly used for the replacement of missing teeth for many years. Because of an increase in the price of gold, base metal alloys have been the choice of alloy for the fabrication of metal ceramic restorations in many dental clinics. Some major disadvantages of base metals are their corrosion and the dark coloration they may cause at the crown margins. This article describes a galvanic gold-plating technique, which is used to minimize corrosion and improve the esthetics of metal ceramic restorations fabricated with Cr-Co base metal alloys

Low-Cost Manufacturing of Metal-Ceramic Composites through Electrodeposition of Metal into Ceramic Scaffold.

Infiltration of a molten metal phase into a ceramic scaffold to manufacture metal-ceramic composites often involves high temperature, high pressure, and expensive processes. Low-cost processes for fabrication of metal-ceramic composites can substantially increase their applications in various industries. In this article, electroplating (electrodeposition) as a low-cost, room-temperature process is demonstrated for infiltration of metal (copper) into a lamellar ceramic (alumina) scaffold. Estimation shows that this is a low energy consumption process. Characterization of mechanical properties s
