Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) describes a developmental enamel formation disorder caused by defective calcium and phosphate deposition by the ameloblasts during enamel matrix formation and enamel maturation. The first permanent molars are affected. The first permanent incisors may or may not be affected (Fig. 1, 2). The prevalence is 10 to 19%. The etiology of MIH is still unknown.

Enamel defects are common alterations that can occur in both the primary or permanent dentition. A range of etiological factors related to this pathology can be found in the literature. Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) is a kind of enamel defect alteration that requires complex treatment solutions, and for this reason, it is of great clinical interest for dental practice. This article describes the management of a clinical case of MIH in a 7-year-old child. The different treatment options depending on the extension of the defect, the degree of tooth eruption and the hygiene and diet habi

Hypocalcification of the enamel is the most common developmental disorder observed in teeth. The prevalence of this kind of hypomineralisation is about 10-19%. These molars are often referred to as cheese molars, because the lesions clinically resemble cheese in color and consistency. Other descriptions are: idiopathic enamel hypomineralisation in the permanent first molars, idiopathic enamel opacities in the permanent first molars, non fluoride enamel hypomineralisation in the permanent first molars, non-endemic mottling of enamel in the permanent first molars. Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a developmental defect of dental enamel that shares features with hypomineralized second primary molars (HSPM). Prior to permanent tooth eruption, second primary molars could have predictive value for permanent molar and incisor hypomineralization. To assess this possible relationship, a cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 414 children aged 8 and 9 years from the INMA cohort in Valencia (Spain). A calibrated examiner (linear-weighted Kappa 0.83) performed the intraoral examinations at the University of Valencia between November 2013 and

BACKGROUND: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a developmental enamel defect with multifactorial etiology. Although the relationship between celiac disease (CD) and developmental enamel defect was demonstrated, the association between CD and MIH is uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to analyze the occurrence of MIH in CD patients.
METHODS: Forty CD patients and a control group with 40 healthy individuals were selected. A calibrated examiner (k≥0.889) according to the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry criteria performed the diagnosis of MIH. Data were analyzed

Molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a condition that is defined based on its peculiar clinical presentation. Reports on the etiology of the condition and possible risk factors are inconclusive and the original suggestion that MIH is an idiopathic condition is often cited. Our group was the first to suggest MIH has a genetic component that involves genetic variation in genes expressed during dental enamel formation. In this report, we provide a rationale to explain the preferential affection of molars and incisors. We suggest that MIH is a genetic condition based on its prevalence, which

Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is an enamel condition characterized by lesions ranging in color from white to brown which present rapid caries progression, and mainly affects permanent first molars and incisors. These enamel defects usually occur when there are disturbances during the mineralization or maturation stage of amelogenesis. Both genetic and environmental factors have been suggested to play roles in MIH's development, but no conclusive risk factors have shown the source of the disease. During head and neck development, the interferon regulatory factor 6 (IRF6) gene is involv

BACKGROUND: Molar-incisor hypomineralization is a common developmental enamel defect associated with pain, functional limitations, and restorative challenges in children. Because of overlapping risk factors of HSPM and MIH, and shared formation period of the first permanent molar, second molar, and deciduous canine, an association is plausible. Several studies have shown that HSPM and/or HPC have an association with MIH; however, the results regarding the strength of these studies are conflicting. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the association of HSPM and HPC wit

PURPOSE: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is playing an increasingly important role in dental practice. MIH is defined as hypomineralization of systemic origin of one to four permanent first molars, often associated with affected incisors. Affected teeth are more susceptible to caries and post-eruptive enamel loss and should be diagnosed and treated as early as possible. In 2016, the Würzburg concept was developed for German-speaking countries including a classification index-the MIH Treatment Need Index (MIH-TNI)-and a treatment plan based on it for the use in daily practice. UNLABELLED: Clinically, Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) lesions are not distributed symmetrically, and their severity varies even within the same arcade.
AIM: To estimate the frequency of asymmetries in hypomineralized lesions on permanent molars and incisors of children with MIH.
METHODS: Three pediatric dentists, calibrated following the diagnostic criteria of Mathu-Muju and Wright (2006) (Kappa 0.87) identified presence and severity of opacities on molars and incisors of patients with MIH. Six pairs of teeth (permanent maxillary and mandibular first molars, central and lateral inci

BACKGROUND: Most prevalence studies on molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) were carried out in European countries, and data from the East-Asian populations were lacking.
AIM: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of MIH in Hong Kong Chinese children.
DESIGN: Since 2006, charting of teeth with MIH was included into the routine dental examination in a school dental clinic. The dental records of grade 6 primary school children who attended annual check-up in this clinic in 2006 were subsequently reviewed retrospectively. The records were selected for this study if the charting indic

OBJECTIVES: Analyze defects in the state of maturation of the enamel result in an adequate volume of enamel, but in an insufficient mineralization, which can affect both deciduous teeth and permanent teeth. Among the most common defects, we recognize Deciduous Molar Hypominerlization (DMH), Hypomineralized Second Primary Molar (HSPM), and Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH). These, in fact, affect the first deciduous molars, the second deciduous molars and molars, and permanent incisors, respectively, but their etiology remains unclear. The objective of the paper is to review studies that f
