Motor and visuomotor skills of children with Asperger's disorder: preliminary findings.

While motor clumsiness is frequently described as an associated feature of Asperger's Disorder, little research has examined specific motor skills and the relation among aspects of motor performance in this population. The present purpose was to present preliminary findings for three aspects of Asperger's: the presence and magnitude of gross motor and fine motor deficits, the presence and magnitude of visuomotor deficits, and the relation between motor functioning and visuomotor skills. 17 boys, 6 to 13 years old, with Asperger's were tested using standardized measures of gross, fine, and visu

Measures of fine motor skills in people with tremor disorders: appraisal and interpretation.

People with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, or other movement disorders involving tremor have changes in fine motor skills that are among the hallmarks of these diseases. Numerous measurement tools have been created and other methods devised to measure such changes in fine motor skills. Measurement tools may focus on specific features - e.g., motor skills or dexterity, slowness in movement execution associated with parkinsonian bradykinesia, or magnitude of tremor. Less obviously, some tools may be better suited than others for specific goals such as detecting subtle dysfunction early i

Impact of Cerebral Visual Impairments on Motor Skills: Implications for Developmental Coordination Disorders.

Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) has become the primary cause of visual impairment and blindness in children in industrialized countries. Its prevalence has increased sharply, due to increased survival rates of children who sustain severe neurological conditions during the perinatal period. Improved diagnosis has probably contributed to this increase. As in adults, the nature and severity of CVI in children relate to the cause, location and extent of damage to the brain. In the present paper, we define CVI and how this impacts on visual function. We then define developmental coordination disor

Relationship of ocular accommodation and motor skills performance in developmental coordination disorder.

Ocular accommodation provides a well-focussed image, feedback for accurate eye movement control, and cues for depth perception. To accurately perform visually guided motor tasks, integration of ocular motor systems is essential. Children with motor coordination impairment are established to be at higher risk of accommodation anomalies. The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between ocular accommodation and motor tasks, which are often overlooked, in order to better understand the problems experienced by children with motor coordination impairment. Visual function, gross a

Deficits in Motor Skills and Upper Limb Proprioception in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) often exhibit motor difficulties and impaired somatosensory perception. While limb proprioceptive function is crucial for motor control, upper limb position sense performance in DLD remains unclear. This study investigated motor proficiency and wrist position sense acuity in Mandarin-speaking children with DLD, compared to typically developing (TD) peers. METHOD: Twenty-seven children with DLD and 27 age-matched TD children (aged 6-12 years) completed motor and proprioceptive tasks. Motor function was evaluated using the Movement

How to distinguish normal from disordered children with poor language or motor skills.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: We tested the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) hypothesis that so-called specific developmental disorders are marked by a pattern of specific discrepant achievement, and an alternative hypothesis that children with these disorders show a pattern of relatively pervasive low achievement. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Children with a diagnosis of Mixed Receptive Expressive Language Disorder (RELD; n = 21) were compared with children with no previously suspected disorder but low standard language scores ( < 80; n = 22) selected from a representative sample, a

Impaired motor skills and proprioceptive function in Mandarin-speaking children with developmental language disorder.

This study examined proprioceptive acuity and its relationship with motor function in Mandarin-speaking children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD). Fifteen children aged 9-12 years with DLD and 15 age- and sex-matched typically developing (TD) children participated in this study. Children's motor function was assessed using the second edition of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC-2). Their proprioceptive acuity was measured based on the absolute error (i.e., proprioceptive bias) and variable error (i.e., proprioceptive precision) when performing joint posit

Fine motor skills in children with prenatal alcohol exposure or fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and associated neurodevelopmental impairments. It is uncertain which types of fine motor skills are most likely to be affected after PAE or which assessment tools are most appropriate to use in FASD diagnostic assessments. This systematic review examined which types of fine motor skills are impaired in children with PAE or FASD; which fine motor assessments are appropriate for FASD diagnosis; and whether fine motor impairments are evident at both "low" and "high" PAE levels. METHODS: A systematic revi

Verbal and Motor Skills in Mandarin-Speaking Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Do Co-Occurring Motor Deficits Matter?

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) often show motor coordination difficulties. Yet, it remains unclear whether children with DLD who have motor difficulties represent a distinct subtype with different verbal profiles compared with children with DLD whose motor coordination falls within the typical range. This study examined the verbal and motor profiles of Mandarin-speaking school-age children with DLD, comparing subgroups with and without co-occurring developmental coordination disorder (DCD). METHOD: Thirty-five children with DLD and 59 typically developing (TD)

Effectiveness of perceptual-motor exercises and physical activity on the cognitive, motor, and academic skills of children with learning disorders: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Children with specific learning disorders (SLD) may have issues in cognitive, motor, and academic skills, affecting their mental health and level of participation in academic and nonacademic activities at school and in everyday life. Research shows that perceptual-motor (PM) exercises and physical activities can improve the cognitive and motor skills of typically developing children. To use PM exercises as an intervention in clinical practice for children with learning disorders, or to use it in future research, it seems necessary to discuss and summarize the existing documents in
