Neurobehavioral manifestations and sequelae of HIV and other infections.

Central nervous system infections in children and adolescents involve a wide spectrum of illnesses, ranging from acute self-limited diseases, such as enteroviral meningitis, to severe diffuse or focal infections (i.e., arboviral encephalitis) resulting in devastating neurologic sequelae. All the clinical manifestations of CNS infections occur to some degree secondary to toxic mediators such as cytokines. These factors are neurotoxic and produce clinical manifestations such as encephalopathy, motor abnormalities, and seizures. Many of these diseases also produce radiculoneuropathies and vasculo

[Neurobehavioral manifestation in early period of Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia].

INTRODUCTION: AD and VD are preceded by a preclinical stage. Small but tangible cognitive impairments sometimes occur many years before the onset and diagnosis ofdementia. The ongoing degenerative process can be conductive to behavioural and psychological symptoms. AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate the rates of neurobehavioral symptoms in the preclinical stages of AD and VD. METHODS: Two hundred and ninety one residents of nursery homes were included in the study. Participants of the study did not display symptoms of dementia in accordance with DSM IV criteria and obtained at leas

Prenatal Exposure to Anxiolytics: A Critical Review on Brain Development and Neurobehavioral Manifestations in Offspring.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions affecting women of reproductive age, and a significant proportion of pregnant women experience clinically relevant anxiety symptoms. In some cases, pharmacological treatment may be required to manage severe or persistent symptoms; however, concerns remain regarding the potential impact of prenatal exposure to anxiolytic medications on fetal brain development. The developing nervous system undergoes critical processes during gestation, including neuronal proliferation, migration, and synaptic formation, which may be sensitive

Neurobehavioral manifestations of symptomatic HIV-1 disease in children: can nutritional factors play a role?

Central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities are significant and frequent complications of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection in infants and children. Although the predominant cause of neurological and neuropsychological abnormalities appears to be related to HIV infection of the CNS, other factors including malnutrition may also play a role. We retrospectively evaluated the association of change in body weight with changes in neurocognitive function, ventricular brain ratio, and cerebrospinal quinolinic acid levels in a small cohort of children (n=15; mean age 6.3 years) with sympto

Neurobehavioral manifestations in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome before and after treatment with continuous positive airway pressure.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by recurrent apneas during sleep, resulting in repetitive hypoxemic episodes and a constant interruption of the normal sleep pattern. Vigilance impairment and neuropsychological deficits are among the main symptoms seen in this condition. One of the major questions in this field concerns the reciprocal interactions between nocturnal hypoxemia, sleep disruption, excessive daytime sleepiness and cognitive deficits. Results of this study suggest that vigilance impairment is attributable mostly to nocturnal hypoxemia. However, in cognitive d

From Clinical Manifestations to Neural Mechanisms: A Systematic Review of Neurobehavioral Consequences of Pregabalin Misuse and Abuse.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Pregabalin is a γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analog. It is prescribed for neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, anxiety disorders, and seizures. Pregabalin misuse and abuse have increased rapidly worldwide in recent years, raising public concerns owing to its addictive potential and associated neurotoxicity. To systematically characterize the neurobehavioral effects of pregabalin misuse and abuse, recent research was synthesized, and the relevant literature was reviewed to identify key findings, explore limitations, and outline future directions. METHODS: This systematic review

[Drug treatment of emotional and cognitive dysfunction in dementia].

The evaluation, treatment and care of patients with dementia are major tasks for the health service. This paper provides an overview of drug treatment of the emotional and cognitive disturbances of dementia. Tricyclic and the newer anti-depressive agents are effective in patients with dementia and depression. Dopamine-blocking agents are effective for some patients with dementia and psychosis, but their use is limited by frequent and severe side-effects. Atypical neuroleptics may prove useful for this patient group. Aggression and agitation may be treated with serotonergic agents, neuroleptics

Catastrophic cognitions in panic disorder with and without agoraphobia.

The cognitive models of panic disorder with (PDA) or without (PD) agoraphobia are now widely recognised. These models propose that patients misinterpret external or internal cues in a catastrophic manner and as a result of these catastrophic cognitions the symptoms are maintained. There is now a large body of empirical evidence for this proposal and the aim of this paper is to systematically review the literature to evaluate whether the empirical evidence supports the contribution of catastrophic cognitions to PD and PDA. Empirical studies using different methodologies, such as interview, ques

Abnormal infant neurobehavior and later neurodevelopmental delays in children with critical CHD.

Infants with critical CHD have abnormal neurobehavior assessed by the Neonatal ICU Network Neurobehavioral Scales. This retrospective cohort study hypothesized associations between abnormal infant neurobehavior in the first month of life and later neurodevelopmental outcomes at 1-2 years of age. Associations between abnormal infant attention (orienting to and tracking stimuli) on the Neonatal ICU Network Neurobehavioral Scales and later motor, cognitive, and language neurodevelopmental outcomes on the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III at follow-up were examined with descriptive statistic

Current management of opioid-related side effects.

The optimal management of opioid-related side effects is hampered by a lack of comparative studies of management strategies. The prevalence of such side effects is influenced by the extent of disease, the patient's age, the presence of coexistent renal and hepatic disease, pulmonary disease, and cognitive dysfunction, a prior opioid history, use of polypharmacy, dose of opioid drug being administered, and the route of administration. The most common opioid-related side effects are constipation, sedation, nausea, vomiting, and cognitive disturbance. Less frequent side effects include urinary re

Do organic solvents induce changes in the dopaminergic system? Positron emission tomography studies of occupationally exposed subjects.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that long-term occupational exposure to organic solvents may effect the levels and turnover of dopamine in man. METHODS: A study was performed on 17 patients with neuropsychiatric symptoms due to occupational solvent exposure, and 11 healthy non-exposed male volunteers (controls). Positron emission tomography (PET) was used to assess striatal dopaminergic function, using L-[11C]DOPA, [11C]nomifensine and [11C]raclopride as tracers. RESULTS: The rate of dopamine synthesis was significantly increased among subjects with occupat

The relationship of hypochondriasis to anxiety disorders.

There is evidence from the literature of phenomenological overlap between hypochondriasis and several anxiety disorders, including specific phobia, panic disorder with agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Even though the boundaries of these disorders are specifically addressed in the DSM-IV criteria, there is evidence of anxiety and phobic symptoms among hypochondriacal patients and hypochondriacal concerns among patients with these various anxiety disorders. Beyond that there appears to be considerable shared comorbidity. However, the data remain limit

[Cognitive manifestations of Alzheimer's disease].

Cognitive features in dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) appear highly heterogeneous. Neuropsychological models seem useful to characterize the cognitive decline. Functional imaging may identify anatomoclinical correlations. Memory impairment is the major symptom in DAT, associated with cortical dysfunctions (aphasia, apraxia, agnosia) and deficits in executive functions. Various evolutive profiles increase this clinical heterogeneity. The use of standardized and validated psychometrical tools appears very important for diagnosis and follow-up of cognitive decline. The MMSE, for example, d

The validity of informant reports in assessing the severity of dementia: evidence from the CAMDEX interview.

The evaluation of a patient's mental state, overall clinical profile and behavioural disturbance in the process of diagnosing dementia requires at least two sources of information: the patient and the informant. Since the severity of the dementia may interfere with the subjective perception of these disorders, it is important to evaluate the consistency between these two sources of information and the clinical and psychometric evaluation made by the physician. Accordingly, in this study five behavioural areas, derived from the semi-structured interview schedule provided by the Cambridge Examin

Neurological outcome in adult patients with early-treated phenylketonuria.

UNLABELLED: Due to the observation of severe neurological symptoms in single patients as well as brain imaging, neuropsychological and neurophysiological abnormalities, the long-term prognosis of treated phenylketonuria is still under discussion. We investigated the neurological outcome of 57 (24 male, 33 female) patients with phenylketonuria (diet onset < 3 months) at a mean age of 23.6 (17-33) years in comparison to control subjects. Methods used were a clinical-neurological examination, tests for fine motor abilities, IQ test (WAIS-R), a neuropsychological attention task and MRI (30 patient

Wide Ranging Neurobehavioral Phenotype in Individuals With Costello Syndrome.

Costello syndrome (CS) is a rare RASopathy that is typically associated with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. Based on detailed neuropsychological testing, this case series describes variability in the neurobehavioral presentations of three unrelated individuals with different pathogenic HRAS variants that cause CS. Results demonstrate a wide range of functioning among people with CS (extremely low to superior ranges) and describe the first cognitive testing results for an individual with HRAS c.179G>A, p.Gly60Asp. Patient-reported social, emotional, and quality of life outcomes also are
