Nursing diagnosis and obstetric, gynecologic, and neonatal nursing: breastfeeding as an example.

Nursing diagnosis is steadily gaining acceptance as the tool to use to communicate nursing's contribution to health care. Historically, however, obstetric, gynecologic, and neonatal (OGN) nurses have had difficulty applying the primarily problem-based diagnoses to a primarily well population. Two nursing diagnoses addressing breastfeeding have been accepted by the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association. The development and use of these diagnoses are discussed in this article. In addition, OGN nurses are challenged to develop other diagnoses that work within the OGN specialties.

The "oldest and the newest of nurses": Nursing and the Professionalization of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

When in the late nineteenth century American physicians increasingly replaced midwives in the care of obstetrical and gynecological patients, they could do so only because they were aided by another emerging group of healthcare professionals: nurses. Nurses were instrumental in assisting physicians in the care of patients in labor and during recovery. They were also necessary for male physicians because the vast majority of nurses were women and their presence during gynecological and obstetrical treatments made it more socially acceptable for men to examine female patients. National surgical, obstetric, anaesthesia and nursing plan, Nigeria.

Recent evidence suggests that strengthening surgical care within existing health systems will strengthen the overall health-care system. However, Nigeria's national strategic health development plan 2018-2022 placed little emphasis on surgical care. To address the gap, we worked with professional societies and other partners to develop the national surgical, obstetric, anaesthesia and nursing plan 2019-2023. The aim was to foster actions to prioritize surgical care for the achievement of universal health coverage. In addition to creating a costed strategy to strengthen surgical care, the plan

Maternal hypothermia: implications for obstetric nurses.

Hypothermia, a core body temperature of less than 95 degrees F (35 degrees C), is a common intraoperative complication among adult patients and may occur in obstetric patients. Obstetric patients are predisposed to hypothermia because of vasodilation from pregnancy, administration of anesthetics and pharmacologic agents, and inherent blood loss with rapid fluid replacement during delivery. Morbidity associated with hypothermia occurs from complications such as hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias, increased oxygen consumption or respiratory depression, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Analysis of Obstetric Nursing Interventions for Home Monitoring of Neonatal Jaundice.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal jaundice is one of the most common conditions in the early postnatal period, and timely identification is essential to prevent complications such as bilirubin encephalopathy and long-term neurodevelopmental impairment. With early hospital discharge becoming more common, effective home-based monitoring strategies are urgently needed. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a structured obstetric nursing intervention in improving early detection of jaundice, reducing the incidence of severe hyperbilirubinemia and hospital readmission, and enhancing parental confidence and

The impact of nurses' and physicians' shift change on obstetrical outcomes.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect around nurses' shift change and on-call physicians' shift change on obstetrical outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective study of women who had an attempt of labor in a single-medical center, January 2006-December 2017. Obstetrical outcomes were compared between the time around nurses' shift change (6:00-8:00, 14:00-16:00, and 22:00-00:00) to the rest of the day, and between the time around on-call physicians' shift change (6:00-8:00, 14:00-16:00) to the rest of the day. RESULTS: 32,861 women were included, 7826 deliveries occurred during nurses' shift-change, and 2

Preparing Perinatal Nurses for Obstetric OR Emergencies by Using Simulations.

A cesarean hysterectomy (CH) is an emergency procedure that can save a woman's life in the event of postpartum hemorrhaging. If the CH is anticipated, it can take place in the general OR; however, more complex patients with multiple comorbidities are undergoing cesarean deliveries, resulting in unanticipated CHs and emergent procedures occurring in the obstetric OR. Many perinatal nurses believe they are not properly trained to provide the level of perioperative care required during a CH. Perinatal nurse leaders implemented a perinatal perioperative simulation program to address this knowledge

HELLP: a collaborative challenge for critical care and obstetric nurses.

Hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count, or HELLP syndrome, is a manifestation of pregnancy-induced hypertension. It is a multisystem, life-threatening disorder. Pregnant women with HELLP syndrome often require critical care nursing. Collaboration between the critical care nurse and the obstetric nurse is essential because it enhances the nursing management of the mother and her fetus. This article reviews selected physiologic changes in pregnancy and the pathophysiology of pregnancy-induced hypertension and HELLP syndrome. These changes and pathophysiology serve as the ration

Women of the courtyard. A nurse's journey to treat obstetric fistulae in Niger.

Obstetric fistula is a devastating condition that results from prolonged or unassisted labor. It produces debilitating physical and emotional consequences caused by constant leaking of urine and/or feces. Because high-quality medical care is available throughout the developed world, unrepaired obstetric fistulae are virtually nonexistent in developed nations. However, the condition is rampant in many developing countries, including Niger, a nation in West Africa. This article explains what obstetric fistula is, why it is such a problem, and what nurses and other health care professionals can d

Integration of Virtual and Augmented Reality Into Obstetric Nursing and Midwifery Education: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Technologies such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been increasingly incorporated into nursing education to support the development of cognitive, psychomotor, and behavioral competencies. In midwifery, immersive environments offer opportunities to simulate high-risk or low-frequency clinical scenarios, strengthening students' confidence and preparedness for professional practice. However, there is still significant variability in how VR and AR are pedagogically implemented, with limited understanding of their theoretical grounding, instructional design, and e

Preparing Nursing Students for Obstetric Emergencies: Effects of High-Fidelity Simulation on Knowledge, Confidence and Learning.

Background: Emergency obstetric situations require rapid clinical decision-making, technical competence, and emotional preparedness to ensure safe and compassionate care for both mother and newborn. However, nursing students often have limited opportunities to experience such high-risk, low-frequency events during clinical placements. Simulation-based education has emerged as an effective strategy to prepare future nurses for caring in emergency contexts, allowing them to develop both technical and non-technical skills in a safe learning environment. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of
